v.35-36
“the next day” repetitive set-up
“Behold the Lamb of God”
v.37
“heard” ἀκούω - they understand
indicates that John the Baptist was pointing people to Jesus correctly
v.38
In verse 38 Jesus turns and sees these disciples, asking them, “What are you seeking?” Think for a moment of the possible ways the Baptist’s disciples could have answered that question:
We seek God’s kingdom.
We seek to rid the land of the Romans.
We seek the fulfillment of OT prophecies.
We seek the king from David’s line.
We seek the truth.
We seek the way.
We seek life.
Instead they ask, “‘Rabbi’ (which means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’” (v.
38).
When they come to Jesus, they come to him as their teacher, and their main concern is to be with him.
The verb rendered “staying,” one of the most significant verbs in this Gospel, is rendered elsewhere in John as “abide” or “remain.”
It is used twice in verse 39, as Jesus answers, “‘Come and you will see.’
So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.”
It seems John the Evangelist wants his audience to see that these who would become Christ’s disciples were mainly interested in being with Jesus, and that his response is to invite them to come to him and see.
Again, while these words may seem small and insignificant, upon reflection, the disciples do come to Jesus, and Jesus will call others to come to him as the narrative progresses (e.g., 7:37).
John has already said that they saw his glory (1:14), and at the end of chapter 1 Jesus declares they “will see greater things than these” (v.
50).
**eternal impact // but we only live for the next 15 minutes
v.40-46
we must seek to convince others to follow Jesus with us
v.46-51
Nathanael was a skeptic
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Isaiah 53:2 “For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.”
But Nathanael had a point, Nazareth was terrible.
Bad reputation, and most people outside of Israel wouldn’t know it’s existence
Maybe your skeptical too?
Philip says, “Come and see”
“come and you will see” Jesus -> Andrew & ___disciple
While Nathanael didn’t know Jesus, at least not yet.. Jesus knew him.
God knows his people
explain v. 47-51
never mentioned again until being listed in ch.
21 and then he’s casually mentioned one time each in Matt., Mark, Luke, and Acts
A pretty insignificant guy it seems
Nathanael (and the other disciples) failed Jesus one time if not more
we can relate, can’t we?
like the others, he abandoned Jesus for his trial & crucifixion
some say their faith faltered & they were puzzled/distraught to see the Messiah suffer
other say they were scared
once again, we can relate, right?
Beautiful truth:
God chooses the weak to exalt his name
Case in point:
Nathanael was the most travelled of the disciples after Jesus’ death
Preached the Gospel in Mesopotamia (Iraq), Persia (Iran), Ethiopia, Arabia, Turkey
While preaching the gospel in Western Armenia (Turkey), Nathanael was skinned alive by a whip shredding his skin of his body, and crucified upside down.
we have no excuse
Not to make you feel bad, but give you perspective
Nathanael may seemingly be insignificant, and thats okay.
We should be okay with that.
But we always want fame, recognition, and influence.
