Introduction
Welcome to February, what is the one thing that February is the most well known for?
Valentines day.
Today we are going to start a 3 week series called What is Love.
In todays world everybody seems to have their own definition for what love is.
So Im going to ask yall.
What is Love?
I went to dictionary.com and found this
a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.
a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection, as for a parent, child, or friend.
So thats what the dictionary calls love.
What is Love
So now I want to look at what the bible says love is.
You may ask but wait does the Bible tell us about love, yes.
In fact theres an entire chapter on it in 1 Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (NIV)
4 Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
So this passage tells us a lot of different things but there are a couple of things I would like to focus on.
Love puts others ahead of yourself
Love is Patient, Kind, not self seeking, trusts, and hopes.
All of these things involve putting other people ahead of yourself.
Love Serves others
Love does not boast, is not proud, does not dishonor others, protects.
There are many different ways that you have the opportunity to serve other people.
You could join different clubs in school that help others.
You could bring money to help your small group win a party by having the most in your baby bottle.
I also encourage you to come up with your own ways to serve other people around you in your school, or other activities you are a part of.
Love rejoices in truth
Dont judge me, thats your truth, thats not true for me, your too closed minded.
Have any of you ever heard any of these phrases before.
So many times we get told that in order to love someone we have to accept them, and everything that they do as acceptable.
We are also told that we have to accept peoples feelings as true.
However if you are a believer in Christ we have to understand that our feelings dont define who we are.
We are defined by the love of Jesus Christ.
However love does not mean that we have to accept everything.
Scripture tells us that love does not delight in evil, but rejoices in truth.
Just like your math teacher will not give you credit for saying 2+2=5.
or your history teacher will tell you you are wrong if you believe the holocaust never happened.
If we are to truly love our friends we have to be willing to confront them when they believe things that are incorrect.
So love does not merely accept things just to make someone feel good about themselves, but actually the opposite, love is willing to make things uncomfortable so that people know the truth.
So now we have talked about what love is, next we are going to talk about How do we love.
How Do We Love
Romans 12:9–13 (NIV)
Love in Action
9 Love must be sincere.
Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.
10 Be devoted to one another in love.
Honor one another above yourselves.
11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.
Practice hospitality.
In this passage it mentions a few different things,
Our love must be sincere
Our love cant just be flattery, where we are just trying to make people feel good about themselves so we can get something from them.
(I think I just described all of high school dating)
Our love must be generous
For us to really show that we truly love, we have to be generous.
Generous with our time, our money, our kindness.
We have to be willing to get into the ugly parts of peoples lives and come along side them to help them.
We have to be willing to share our money with people when they are in desperate need.
(leftovers to homeless)
Finally we get to why should we love
Why should we love
1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)
8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
We should love each other because when we are truly loving each other, when we are truly caring for each other, and truly putting other peoples needs above our own, we tend to forget about ourselves.
We tend to no longer have needs because as I am helping meet your needs some one else is coming along and helping meet mine.
That is the beauty of Biblical love.
It isnt about a feeling.
Its about protecting each other, caring for each other, and helping each other.
