The term “standard” is used by the RSV in two different senses: (1) a symbol mounted on a pole and used as an emblem for group identification, as a marker for a rallying point (i.e., an ensign), or as an object of worship; (2) a criterion established by custom or authority.
refers to a nautical ensign, which seems to symbolize the wealth of Tyre.
refers figuratively to the Messiah as an ensign that the nations will seek
standards. The ethical *norms that serve to define the nature of obligatory and permitted actions, or to guide human beings toward *right and away from wrong behaviors. Moral standards may also designate the general understandings of what constitutes decent or morally admissible behavior that characterize a particular *society.
