INTRODUCTION:
Review: DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE TO GOD
Romans 6:11 “11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
1 John 3:8 “8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy [LOOSE] the works of the devil.”
WHY?…
TODAY: How are we alive to God?
Opening Scripture:
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Foundations of Pentecostal Theology (A. The Death of Christ)
The only basis on which a Holy God could forgive sin was by His Son bearing the penalty of the sinner’s guilt. He cannot forgive merely on the grounds of the sinner’s repentance. It can only be because the penalty has been fully paid. God does not, as some preach, forgive sinners because He loves them. His Love caused Him to give His only begotten Son to be a ransom for sin, thus the sinner can be forgiven.
The Sin issue had to be dealt with!

The sacrifice on the cross

WE SEE THAT THE SACRIFICE...
Represents for all humanity (Rm. 5)
Romans 5:6 “6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
1 John 2:2 “2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
Substitutes for all humanity (Christ dies in our place)
1 Corinthians 15:3 “3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,”
FT/OT - Death foreseen in many types and prophecies
The Offering of Isaac (Gn. 22)
The Passover Lamb (Ex. 12)
The Levitical Sacrificial System (Lv. 1–7)
The Brazen Serpent (Nm. 21; Jn. 3:14)
The Slain Lamb (Is. 53:6-7)
Expiation (removal of the stain of sin)
2 Corinthians 5:21 “21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Propitiation (removal of penalty - Rm. 3:21-25)
Romans 3:25 “25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.”

The restoration of the cross

WE SEE THAT WE NOW HAVE...
Reconciliation - the enmity brought about because of sin has changed to peace and fellowship
Ephesians 2:12-13 “12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
Redemption - releasing from captivity
Galatians 3:13 “13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—”
Relationship - covenantal relationship; God wants fellowship
1 Peter 3:18 “18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,”
Healing - we are to be made whole, including physical curing!
1 Peter 2:24 “24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

The revelation of God on the cross

Romans 2:4 “4 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
Galatians 2:20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
