God Calls Abraham
The Promise of a Child
Ishmael
We don’t have to “help out” God when it comes to His promises.
They became impatient or perhaps thought that God would give them a child in a different way.
But this is not what God wanted or had promised to use to fulfill His promise of numerous descendants.
Reaffirming the Promise of Many Descendants
Abraham 99 years old now (people lived longer back then they typically do now).
24 years since God had called him to leave his home.
God changes Abram’s name to Abraham to indicate that he would be a father of many.
Abraham means: “Father of a multitude”
Promise for a Son
God sent messengers to Abraham to tell him the news that they would have a son.
Isaac is Born
Offering of Isaac
God did not want Abraham to kill Isaac.
Rather He was testing Abraham to see whether or not Abraham would obey Him.
Would he be willing to give up the long awaited son that he loves so much and was promised?
Was Abraham truly dependent and trusting in God?
Abraham put God 1st even above his long awaited and cherished son.
God provided the offering in place of Isaac.
Application for Today
Look at Hebrews
Abraham knew that the promise was to be fulfilled in Isaac, and so He believed that God would even be able to raise Isaac back to life if thats what it took.
He was confident that God would keep His promise one way or another and so lived by faith in God.
Look also at Galatians 3:29

All nations would be blessed through Abraham.
Any person from any nation who believes in Jesus will become a descendant of Abraham and receive a blessing.
