A sheep, in a pasture surrounded by their fellow sheep, may not be able to see much further than the fur of the sheep in front of them. As comforting as it may be to be surrounded by family, not knowing what's beyond the group can make one uneasy. The reason the shepherd's staff is so tall and unique is so that when they can't see forward, they can look up and know that the shepherd is near or at the top of the hill watching over them. We won't try to pin down a specific attribute of God to call His staff, but whatever that is for you should not just remind you that God is with you, it should affirm that He is with you.
