35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
What is the soul?
noun
the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separate from the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part.
the spiritual part of humans regarded in its moral aspect, or as believed to survive death and be subject to happiness or misery in a life to come: arguing the immortality of the soul.
the disembodied spirit of a deceased person: He feared the soul of the deceased would haunt him.
the emotional part of human nature; the seat of the feelings or sentiments.
a human being; person.
The Bible tell us the significance of the soul...
We are created in three parts; body, soul and spirit.
Body: natural part of who we are, the physical.
Least significant.
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Soul: - middle ground between the body and spirit. Your thoughts, emotions, memory, imagination, convictions, desires and affections.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Spirit: part of us that communicates and interacts with the spirit realm.
The soul is the part that bridges the physical and the spiritual...
You can teach it from the tabernacle as the outer court (body) holy place (soul) most holy place (spirit).
Outer court: Ater of Sacrifice and Brazen laver
- place of repentance and cleansing (physically done)
Inner court: Table of Shoe bread, Alter of incense, Golden candle stick
- Relationship is built, the bridge between the flesh and the spirit (emotionally done through thought processes)
Most Holy Place: Ark of the Covenant, Spirit of God dwelt
- The only way to get from the Outer Court to the Most Holy Place was by passing through the Inner Court.
- The only way for flesh to get to God is by bringing your thoughts and emotions into submission, coming into relationship with God
- The only way for the natural man and the spirit of God to come together is though this mechanism that God gave us called the soul.
This is the reason why christian character is so important.
People say; I’m not responsible for what other think of me…
If you leave a physical exchange with someone with a lost soul, confused and in doubt, hurt from the exchange - than you are a fool!
Spiritually you are a child predator...
What about the soul?
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Great value
It can be damaged (phycological pain)
Can be lost
If it can be lost, than it found/saved
If it can be lost and found, it can be guarded and protected
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; And he that winneth souls is wise.
What is so special about a soul?
With your first breath, God breathed it into you
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
What is the difference between that animals who live and people who live?
Animals live as they have been created.
A deer has never written a self help book...
A bear has never taught a symposium on the best tactics to survive in the wild
A fish can never become better than it is.
It does not have the mechanism to become…
But God create man and breathed into him the breath of life and what happened?
Man BECAME a living soul!
Your soul is God’s greatest gift to you!
Your source of all achievement
2. Your soul is the source of all sin…
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
If it is the source of sin, it is the seed bed of holiness
3. You soul is eternal
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
4. You soul will live in everlasting joy or misery!
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Three things to understand about the soul
You can starve it
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
You can strangle it
19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
You can surrender it
11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Conclusion:
What the Holy Ghost is to the spirit man, the soul is to the natural man.
We walk through our world never thinking about influence of everything around us…
Those things influence your mood - YOUR SOUL!
You have no value on your soul
You have no value on the souls of others!
The soul is the gift of God to humanity!
