Let’s jump into our message and talk about the HABIT of Sacrificial Serving.
I truly hope that today’s message will inspire you to serve.
That it will motivate you to serve.
That it will cause you to increase your service to others and really become a part of who you are... and not simply something you do occasionally.
PAUSE
When you think of serving others, what comes to mind?
Maybe some of us think about the fine folks who greet you at the doors on our way into church.
Or maybe what comes to mind are:
The wonderful volunteers who make your specialty drinks in the café!
Or the amazing people invest in your children every week!
Or the wonderful people who get to church SUPER early all winter and shovel snow and put down ice melt!
Or the incredible people who clean the buildings ... all of them are wonderful examples of what service looks like!
We have SO many AMAZING servants who serve 100% behind the scenes that want NO credit for what they do!
And to all of you…..I….we all so appreciate you and what you do!!!!
PAUSE
But, maybe your mind doesn’t go directly to church as mine does... maybe you think about other people like:
A server at a restaurant.
Or someone who bags groceries at the store.
Or the health care worker at your clinic.
Or one of your kid’s teachers at school.
Again, all of those are great examples of people who serve others.
PAUSE
Of course, there are many examples we could give of simple ways to serve others every day...
Small acts of kindness to help, or bless, those around us.
But, when it comes to Sacrificial Service, there really is no better place to look than Jesus.
There is no better example than Jesus!
Write this down:
Jesus is the greatest, most sacrificial servant, of all time.
Repeat
PAUSE
Everything Jesus did was an act of service.
Everything.
Jesus served the will of His Heavenly Father, by coming to earth, living a sinless life, and dying for the sins of all mankind.
Jesus took God’s wrath upon Himself and became our substitution.
The punishment for sin is death, and complete and total separation from God and anything good...
And served us, even though we did NOT deserve it by choosing to take our death, our sin’s punishment, upon Himself in order to serve God’s will.
PAUSE
Truly, Jesus is the definition of Sacrificial Service!
And we are called to follow Him!
So, the logical question then is…..what does that look like?
PAUSE
Turn with me to Philippians 2 in your Bible where we will see this clearly:
Philippians 2: 1-8
Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.
Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!
We can stop reading there……..
PAUSE
This passage teaches us Jesus is God and that He chose to become like that which He created...
He became a human.
But NOT JUST a human, as if that wasn’t lowering Himself enough....
Jesus chose to become a servant to His creation!
But NOT JUST a Servant... Jesus even humbled Himself to the point of dying on a Cross for the sins of His creation!
One scholar says it this way, “Jesus didn’t simply lessen Himself, Jesus chose to empty Himself, to literally condescend Himself, in the greatest act of love to ever be revealed!”
PAUSE
You see, Jesus wasn’t just a good guy who helped people out.
He wasn’t just a kind-hearted fellow who showed up early and stayed late to assist people.
He wasn’t just an example of a servant-hearted person that we are to emulate.
Jesus’ sacrificial service SERVED a greater purpose.
His Sacrificial Service became the point of salvation for our souls!
Jesus’ sacrificial service is created the means for others to succeed and draw near to God!
And, the same ought to be true of our own sacrificial service, as well.
PAUSE
Pastor Keith, who serves as our Ebenezer Campus pastor often says, “We are most like Jesus when we are serving.”
Isn’t that true?
Jesus was a servant...and when we live like Him we will naturally serve others….
