Luke 10:25–37 (KJV 1900)
25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. 29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
Did you know that we(christians) are to be the most loving people on the planet? There ought to be nobody that loves people like us!
When Jesus is asked whats “the most important law” Jesus even responds with basically “Love God and your neighbor.”
In Luke 10 a lawyer trying to make him self seem good asks a question “Who is my neighbor?”
Jesus is going to spin a masterful parable not only explaining who our neighbor is but also how to love our neighbor!
He is going to finish the parable telling us this “Go and do like wise”
We are commanded by Jesus to love like this parable!
The question we must answer is not “Who is my neighbor?” but “To whom can I be a neighbor?”
The Condition of the man
This “certain man” had a rough go at things.
He was beaten
robbed of his nice clothing
and left for dead
It would not be crazy to say that this man is much like the world that is around us!
People who have been hurt and mistreated
People who have had their dignity or great possessions taken
Look what Jesus says in John 10:10
The devil exists just to kill, destroy, and steal.
People with out Jesus are too near death
Romans 6:23
This man was beaten and left out for all to see. This will show us into the different attitudes that can be shown for other.
The concern of others
People begin to walk by and see this man. You would think that people would help him but look at what happens
10:31–32 Priests were responsible for interpreting the law and officiating in the temple. The Levites (the tribe from which the priests came) assisted them. Perhaps these men had fulfilled their religious obligations in Jerusalem and wanted to get home, or perhaps they were on their way to Jerusalem and didn’t want to be late. Maybe they thought contact with the man would contaminate them or were afraid of being robbed too should they stop. Regardless, they didn’t want to be bothered. Broken people need someone to show them compassion and give them life.
The religious people just pass by
Then a Samaritan shows up!
We should know that Samaritans were not considered the “best” of people back then rather the worst yet this is the man that does something!
The Samaritan looks at the man. Not ignored but seen!
He then is moved with compassion.
The desire to actually do something!
He helps this man!
He saw this mans need and was moved with compassion!
That is the right heart! It is a God like heart!
Jesus saw our need and instead of not caring, or ignoring it he helped!
He is compassionate !
Psalm 86:15
Because he is we should be too!
John 13:34
Let’s look at the care this samaritan man provided
The care
Helped him with his wounds!
He cleaned and wrapped this mans wounds. What care!
Helped him at cost to him self
He used his donkey, money, and time!
Jesus again is the ultimate model of this!
He can fix the wounds caused by sin!
1 Peter 2:24
He helped the world at great cost to him self!
2 Cor 8:9
We are now commanded to love those around us like this!
Who can we help?
Share Jesus with?
Serve?
Col 3:12 “12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;”
