Find the lie, speak the truth
Open with story of Nazis. How was this able to happen? Because everyone believed a lie.
There are lies everyone around you is believing. Let me tell you something, there are lies you are believing today that are keeping you from the freedom Christ bought for you on the cross.
John 8:31
Lies, Slavery, Sin, Satan: Truth, Freedom, Righteousness, Jesus
Lies about who God is, who we are, and what the good life truly is. -JMC
The Gospel is the truth, and what the Gospel says about God, you, and the good life
The Lies Youth Believe
YOU
I am unloveable: I am not enough, I haven’t done enough, I don’t have enough
God loves you
You are His beloved Child
You don’t belong
You are beautiful
God’s standard of beauty is totally different
The lie is beauty is found in how you look
Your flaws are not flaws flaws are a lie
Your value is tied to your beauty
Self is salvation
GOD
God is not enough
he will supply your every need
God makes mistakes
no he doesn’t
GOOD LIFE
The answer to you sadness, lonliness, pain, shame, guilt, anger is lust/sin
Jesus is the answer
The good life is money/stuff
Money will not satisfy
The stats don’t show it
Under every bad behavior/sin is a lie you are believing which the Gospel has truth to speak into
What does the Gospel say
Real Notes:
Find the lie speak the truth
Lies:
Who you are (identity):
You don’t belong.
There’s something wrong with you.
You aren’t beautiful
You haven’t done enough
Or you’ve done something that you can’t help but feel shame.
Your value is tied to your success/beauty.
You are too far gone, you are evil
Who God is:
God isn’t enough.
God doesn’t care about me.
God isn’t worthy of my worship.
God makes mistakes.
What the Good life is:
Lots of money, stuff, and sex
Lie of security, you’re in control
All of these lies feed into your sin. Under every bad behavior/sin is a lie you are believing.
What do we do about all these lies? We must speak the truth of the Gospel into them .
It starts with believing a lie that you don’t belong, or you aren’t enough, or God doesn’t really care about you, or the Good life is making lots of money, and then you feel Sad, shame, fear, loneliness, and you buy another lie that the answer to that sadness, shame, fear, loneliness is sin when in reality sin is only going to make you more sad, more shameful, more afraid, and more lonely, because after you sin you are tempted to buy another lie that God doesn’t forgive you that he isn’t really enough to forgive you. It is a vicious cycle of lies and lies and lies.
You believe a lie, then you buy a lie to try and fix the other lie and end up in a cycle of lies
What do we do about this? We gotta find the lie.
The truth is there are a lot of lies you are believing.
Here is what I want you to do.
Next time you are feeling bad about yourself, doubting God, or struggling with sin ask yourself what lie am I believing?
Then speak the truth of the gospel into that lie.
The lie-nosaurus
End with the truth of the Gospel.
Last week Wade talked about Ephesians 2 he walked us through verses 1-9 and explained how you are either dead in your sin or alive in Christ. For those of us who have a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, or are alive in Christ, the next verse in Ephesians 2, Ephesians 2:10
Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
This verse tells us that we are his good creation and he has a plan for us.
This is good news the problem is, there are lies that we believe keeping us from living into the truth of who we are and the life God has called us to live.
You may say why would I believe a lie, or I am not believing lies, this is not for me.
No every person in this room, including myself, so yes you, believe lies everyday that keep you from living into the truth of who you are and the life God has called you to live.
Listen to me, If you are going to be who God made you to be and live the life he is calling you to live you must find the lies you are believing and speak the truth of the Gospel into those lies.
This is where we are going to day, buckle up, this is important, lets pray
Open up to John 8 give the context
2 Important things:
Jesus says if you abide in his word, you will know truth and the truth will set you free
Satan is the father of lies, the father of all the world who does not follow Christ
The world, meaning the people who make up the majority of the earth who do not follow Christ, through television, movies, news, culture, social media, books, schools, every facet of our lives are doing the works of satan John 8:41-44 to get you to believe lies to keep you from being who God is calling you to be and living the life he is calling you to live.
You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Satan is a liar the father of lies and the father of everyone who does not follow Christ.
Why do they not know the truth, John 8:43
Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
They cannot bear to hear his word and therefore do not know the truth.
These are the people who create the media you consume.
Its not even just that its the way our society is built. It consumes everything.
Lets run through some lies
You don’t belong.
There’s something wrong with you.
You aren’t beautiful
You haven’t done enough
Or you’ve done something that you can’t help but feel shame.
Your value is tied to your success/beauty.
You are too far gone, you are evil
God isn’t enough.
God doesn’t care about me.
God isn’t worthy of my worship.
God makes mistakes.
Lots of money, stuff, and sex
Lie of security, you’re in control
It goes even farther than this because All of these lies feed into your sin. Under every bad behavior/sin is a lie you are believing.
We have to find the lie and speak the truth into it.
What is the truth. Look at John 8:31-32
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
The truth here is the Gospel
The gospel that says you are...
Go back through
You don’t belong.
There’s something wrong with you.
You aren’t beautiful
You haven’t done enough
Or you’ve done something that you can’t help but feel shame.
Your value is tied to your success/beauty.
You are too far gone, you are evil
God isn’t enough.
God doesn’t care about me.
God isn’t worthy of my worship.
God makes mistakes.
Lots of money, stuff, and sex
Lie of security, you’re in control
Lie-nosaurus
Listen there is a very real threat to you and the only way to kill that threat and live into the person and purpose God is calling you to is to call out the lie and speak the truth of the Gospel to that lie until the lie trembles at the name of Jesus.
So we are going to take a couple minutes. What lies are you believing? What’s the truth?
