A. Paul is writing to combat a works Gospel
B. How are we justified through Christ?
C. Then how do we live in light of the Gospel (TonY last week)
E … and now transitioning to this final encouragement and closing prayer.
This morning… we are getting at the heart of what a church family is about…
What is your family about: (if you had to narrow it to one thing)
This is what our family does “Go after hard people” ( pastor story)
Organization: “The Butler Way” “ND Play Hard Today” “IU, lose to Purdue”
When you lose sight of your mission you miss place your identity.
Doxa Bible Church= What is your mission, what is your name?
5. Glorify God is literally in your family name (Doxa)….
Big Idea: A Faith Filled Family Gives God the Glory.

Pray
1) Recognize your need… V 11-12
1) Recognize your need… V 11-12
See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
Reinforce point one
I love this transition…. (Look how bad I write)
A. Paul likeley wrote this himself..
First, Dont be mistaken.. I desperately need Jesus and so do you…
A. Let me hammer in the nail that I am a weak broken sinful man. If I wanted to glorify myself I would never show you my hand writing.
B. God can be gloried through your good deeds… but he is often glorified through your weakness..
C. God wants to use you just as you are…
D. Stop and recognize that in Gods sovereignty he is allowing you to go through whatever it is. I dont think Gdo revels in our Pain but I also believe he built every person with needs that turn us back to him.
It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
your greatest need is not to be rescued from persecution. V 12
Part of being a Christ follower is suffering.
this is often oppsite of how we aproach God. we believe became we want… When things get hard we want nothing more than to take it away
but what if we shifted the focus from escaping persecution to giving God the glory…
Transition: When was the last time you brought yourself back to this reality?
you are weak i’m the flesh
God still wants to use you
the goal of our faith is not to escape persecution
- For while you were still weak Christ died..
Transition: recognize your need and secondly…
2) Evaluate your motives to do good… V 12-13
2) Evaluate your motives to do good… V 12-13
For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.
Reinforce point
Paul is getting at the wickedness of the hearts motivation to do good:
Recap the situation & check out the motive
The Jews: The Temptation to make much of yourself.
The Gentile: The Temptation to avoid negative outcomes.
Both parties: The Temptation to people please (To be well recieved).
If we are honest with ourselves… often the good that we do is not motivated by anything actually good. rather we do good for these same reasons above.
Billy Graham Story
- Paul is being really real with the church in Galatia…. You have Got to address your wicked motives… “We are not here to do good out of the flesh”
A. Why do you give to the church?
B. What is motivating you to give up your time…
C. Do you serve because it makes you look good, do you like the position,
D. do you do it out of obligation?
Transition: We all do this (we are all sinners, paul himself discussing this in (Romans 7)
But there is a better way..
3) Boast In nothing but Jesus. V 14-15
3) Boast In nothing but Jesus. V 14-15
But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
Lets sit on this word Boast….
Boast or rejoice = proclamation that you got this…
Inward:
The internal belief that God is responsible for anything God that happens to you
Outward:
The outward statements of praise you give in response to your circumstance
So if we do not boast in ourself what do we boast in Jesus Christ…
Significance of the statement of the cross
We boast in the death of our Savior
30-40 percent of each Gospel focuses on the final week of Jesus life
This is the most significant event in the history of the world…
Do you revel in the Cross….
Because of the Cross Paul Goes on… we are now a new creation… V 15
A. I dont care what the world think (They can crucify me)
B. I will boast in Jesus regardless of circumstance…
He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Have you ever thought of the context of this verse… (John the Baptist)
- John knew his need.. and he built his entire ministry to point to the coming messiah… This is who we are called to be.
A Light to the world that points to the Glory of Jesus
In hardship and blessing we give God the Glory.
Transition: So While this is an encouragement today, and I hope the Lord is using this passage as he is with me to redefine my my heart and motives towards serving him… Paul is not calling us to a one time evaluation but rather a life of giving God the glory. which leads us into point four…
4) Rinse & Repeat. 16-18
4) Rinse & Repeat. 16-18
And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.
From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
Walk by this rule…
A. As you go you constantly do this…
Walk with God… Constantly giving God the glory in your life…
In this You will experience true peace.
God has done and will do some incredible things through this Church.
HE IS RESPONSIBLE
HE GETS THE GLORY
In all areas of your life
We boast in nothing but the cross of Jesus Christ.
So, As we close I want us to take a moment and do a few things…
Search your heart
Bring your motives before God
Thank him for his provision…. Give him glory
lets pray.
Close by singing the Doxology this morning.
