Matthew 7:13 KJV (WS)
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Isaiah 35:8 KJV (WS)
And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.
Our Lord tells us which way to follow in life.
FIRST—THE COMMAND FOR THE WAY
“Enter ye in at the strait gate.”
Godliness is not an option in your lifestyle but is commanded by God.
“God … commandeth all men every where to repent.”
Acts 17:30 KJV (WS)
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Salvation is something more than an invitation to the unsaved, it is an injunction to the lost soul.
They are commanded to be saved.
Our text portrays godliness as the entering of a gate and walking on a path.
SECOND THE CHARACTER OF THE WAY
The word “strait” describes the way of godliness.
• It is untolerable.
The word “strait” means ‘narrow.’
Those who walk the righteous way are often called ‘narrow-minded’ for they are not very flexible in there convictions.
They are dogmatic, straight-laced, and do not tolerate evil.
That is the way Christ said to walk.
• It is uneasy.
“Strait” means there are obstacles that one has to negotiate, and go around.
Thus the path is not easy.
It is a difficult way.
Living for God has never been advertised as the easy life.
• It is unpopular.
“Strait” does not allow much room for a crowd and so it is not surprising that it is not a popular path, in fact the verse that follows this verse says “few” will walk this way.
If you are wanting to be popular this way is not your ticket to popularity.
It is only the ticket to preservation from eternal judgment.
THIRD—THE CAUTION FOR THE WAY
“Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat” The evil way is described in the bulk of our text as a caution to avoid.
• It is roomy.
“Wide” and “Broad” means there is room for everyone.
The homosexuals, abortionists, gamblers and drunkards will all be welcomed.
They will experience no restrictions on their lifestyle.
Their conduct will be tolerated though bad it may be.
• It is ruinous.
“Leadeth to destruction.”
This is the negative part of the path.
We need to examine the consequences of what we do.
Entering the wrong gate may be our destruction.
There is a great peril if you enter the wrong gate and go the wrong way.
• It is recommended.
“Many there be which go in thereat.”
This gate is highly recommended.
Therefore it is very popular.
Most of your friends and acquaintances will be on this path.
You will be considered ‘wise’ for choosing this path.
You will not have to walk alone, nor will it be difficult.
Like the lowest bidder, it is the most popular, the most recommended way, but it is the wrong way.
Just because something is evil does not mean it will be disapproved by society.
Evil has many friends in this life. But none are righteous.
