John 19:38–42 NLT
38 Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. 39 With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. 40 Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth. 41 The place of crucifixion was near a garden, where there was a new tomb, never used before. 42 And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish Passover and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.
Joseph of Arimathea are out in the open. Very vocal and open about there commitment to Christ.
And His disciples for the most part are in hiding.
Joseph - only appears in connection with the burial of Jesus
he was also a member of the Sanhedrin- He was apart of the supreme council that handled Jewish affairs in Roman Palatine
He was apart of the decision makers about legal , religious, political and social ramification amongst the Jewish people.
He was a rich man Mat 27:57 “57 As evening approached, Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea who had become a follower of Jesus,”
Jospeh was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come to the world. Mark 15:43 “43 Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honored member of the high council, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.)”
He also didn’t agree with how the other religious leaders handled Jesus Luke 23:51 “51 but he had not agreed with the decision and actions of the other religious leaders. He was from the town of Arimathea in Judea, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.”
There where many people who was ashamed of Jesus but did not follow Him because of fear.
John 12:42–43 NLT
42 Many people did believe in him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn’t admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. 43 For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.
But now you have Jospeh though labeled to be a fearful person(vs 38). Yet doing the most courageous thing you can do in that day and thats being responible for not only the site under which Jesus was buried but also taking care of the embalming process.
Backed then the disciples of a teachers was able to bury there teacher/ rabbi.
Jesus being charged as a criminal and one who wanted to over through the monarchy. He’s charges where that of sedition.
But Jospeh used his power and access to Pilate to get Jesus and bury Him.
Joseph and Nicodemus servants help Jesus come off the cross and carry the spices to the burial site.
So Joseph took care of the legal matters and Nucodemus handled the spices.
As used by Egyptians in embalming, myrrh was a fragrant resin. The Jews turned it into powdered form, and mixed it with aloes, a powder of aromatic sandalwood. The mixture provided a pleasant fragrance in a variety of circumstances (e.g. Ps. 45:8; Pr. 7:17; Song 4:14). Used in connection with burial, its purpose was not to embalm (since the Jews did not remove internal organs and fill the space with spices, as the Egyptians did) but to stifle the smell of putrefaction.
Decay or rotting
John 20:1 NLT
1 Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.
John 20:2 NLT
2 She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
The fact that God used Mary Magdalene as the first witness of the empty tomb is very unique because a female witness back in those days had no credibility.
A women voice wasn’t even reliable in the court of law.
But we see God in His sovereignty is defying cultural norms.
The Christian life should always defy culture.
Your Christian life by definition should be cultural.
The way of Christ is to be counter cultural.
But God uses what the world deems as foolish to confound the wise.
John 20:3–4 NLT
3 Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. 4 They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
Peter was older the John. John was allot younger and out ran Peter.
John 20:5–10 NLT
5 He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. 6 Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, 7 while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. 8 Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed— 9 for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. 10 Then they went home.
vs 5 He saw the strips of “linen lying there” evidence that no one had simply moved the body.
Nor would thieves have been likely to leave behind expensive linen and even more expensive spices.
Thats like leaving a rolex behind or some expensive jewelry.
