Life Through Christ

Romans 5:12–14 NIV
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

Chapter 5 so far

Peace with God

Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ we have been justified through faith

No Shame in Hope

Romans 5:5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.God’s love has been poured out
we have been given undeserving, unmerited love

At the Right Time

Romans 5:6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.here is the perfect timing of God
Christ died for the ungodly

Boast in Jesus

Romans 5:11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
we can only boast in Jesus
Romans 5:12–14 NIV
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.

Sin Via One Man

Romans 5:12 NIV
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—

The Sin

Adam was created perfect with so sin
selfish and disobedient breach of fellowship
believe the Devil rather than God
Adam is the only instigator of sin
the pride of Satan became the pride of man

The Penalty of Death

Adam allowed sin in the world
the Devil said you will surely not die
death was the reality of sin
death has cursed man ever since

Death to All

the name of Adam means humanity
Adam as the type of human being passed on his sin
the culture of disobedience was passed to each generation
all humanity was “ïnfected”
came came to all people

No Law No Sin But

Romans 5:13 NIV
To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.

No Law

the law was introduced at the time of Moses
before that sin still reigned in the world
the story of Noah
Genesis 6:11 NIV
Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.
sin as disobedience to God existed
the law just codified what sin actually was
the law highlighted sin
the law demonstrated that salvation could not be achieved through works

Death Reigned

Romans 5:14 NIV
Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.
Paul reiterates this message that sin prevailed from Adam
Adam disobeyed a specific command - do not eat
mankind took on the pride of Satan
mankind sins in that pride through disobedience to God
we all once shared in that sin and thus death - Romans 3
The Pattern of Adam
Adam was a perfected created being without sin
when he disobeyed God, he lost that perfection
only one other person could be considered his equal in perfection
Jesus Christ, fully man and fully God
the only man never to have sinned in his lifetime
Jesus became the model of perfection for every human being

Gift of Grace

Romans 5:15 NIV
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
grace is greater than sin
Jesus is better than Adam
no matter how great sin grows, grace has its measure
this is the eternal hope we have in Jesus
his grace has set us free
let us accept that grace
to save us from death
thence to live life as God intended
