Intro: Allowing someone to carry your burden is hard.
Whether it makes us feel insecure or
Jn 1 | The washing of the feet was in connection of the Passover idea, Jesus was washing the feet of the disciples as a way to show that they were clean and safe. No greater love than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13)
The act of washing feet is three different things:
- A display of His love
- A symbol of saving cleansing
- A model of Christian conduct
Jesus taking of his outer garment to wrap a towel around himself:
- This was an adoption of the dress of a menial slave
- Phil 2:6-8
Big words:
- People see Christ in your service requires them to choose, being served is a choice and reveals our heart.
- Service disarms the heart.
- It can make some search themselves
- Knowing and doing results in blessing
Claims in verses 13-14
- Jesus is called a teacher and Lord, which comes as Rabbi or Mari.
- He is pointing them to the act that He has just preformed and calling them to do the same
- If their teacher has done it, then they have not excuse for not doing the same.
1. Peter wasn’t willing to let him touch his feet.
a. Peter didn’t want Jesus the teacher and lord to touch his feet, whether he was ashamed or whether he just didn’t think that was His Job.
b. The symbol is that of surrender, Peter had to allow Jesus to wash his feet.
c. We all want it a different
i. We don’t want to be wrong
ii. We don’t want Him to go
iii. We don’t want it to true
d. Jesus must wash our feet and just like Peter’s we are given the opportunity to react.
2. Peter was looking for a complete clean and Jesus offered it.
a. Peter was looking to have his whole body cleaned, but Jesus was teaching them the finished work of the cross.
b. Washing everything is
c. How do we know this will do the trick?
i. As a youth I have went back multiple time to re-instate my salvation
1. It didn’t work the first time
2. I lost it because of my new sins
3. I must of not meant it.
d. You didn’t do anything, Christ did.
i. Jesus meant it when he did, there is a process for me to accept what he did but that doesn’t include questioning the sacrifice.
ii. Jesus died for each of us plain but not simple
iii. If I am to do Jesus’ sacrifice any just I can tell you the it was enough
1. The woman at caught in adultery wasn’t stoned but asked to go and sin no more.
2. She was shown mercy, and that mercy enabled her to walk in her new direction.
3. We are called to walk in the ways of Christ not by the words of Christ that showed merciful servanthood in light of the cross.
a. Jesus re-instated His title after washing their feet, then called them to follow
b. Illustration: what is one place you would want me to venture in, in your house?
c. The call of the cross has never been about force yourself to live better, it’s been to affect change through heart disarming service.
d. Jesus called to his disciples to walk in faithfulness to God with the best wow factor trick ever.
Conclusion: Jesus has set us free.

- But if you accept it, it may just dictate your every new move this year.
