TS: In ch 61, Isaiah describes the anointing and assignment of the Messiah and the fruit of His ministry. He was the ultimate Preach and Redeemer of Israel who rescues them.
Jesus Himself read this passage in the synagogue during his ministry and declared,
Luke 4:21 NKJV
And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Jesus began His work while Earth and the ultimate deliverance will come when he returns.
RS:

I The Messiah 61:1-3

A. Messiah’s Anointing 61:1

The Messiah is anointed by the Father and anointed in the Spirit
God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, 3 in one.
The whole Trinity, the entire Godhead is active and at work on Earth through God in the Flesh, Jesus.
While in the flesh, God the Son
was appointed by God the Father
Jesus often made this clear
a. as a child in the Temple “about my Father’s business”
b. After meeting with the woman at the well Jn 4:31-34
John 4:31–34 NKJV
In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” Therefore the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.
c. In His prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane
Matthew 26:39 NKJV
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”
Matthew 26:42 NKJV
Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”
Matthew 26:44 NKJV
So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

ii. was empowered by God the Holy Spirit

AP: We too are appointed and Empowered by the Spirit
We are called for a purpose:
Like Jesus, we submit to God and serve Him
He set us apart as His children and ministers on Earth.
His Spirit dwells in us and fills us
The Holy Spirit equips to carry out our assignment

B. Messiah’s Assignment 61:2-3

Preaches Good News to the Poor
Isaiah 61:1 NKJV
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
The spiritual poor
bankrupt in the flesh
spiritual poor due to debt of sin owed
Wages of sin is death
We sin, that is what we deserve
physically
eternally
Comforts the brokenhearted
Isa 61:1c
He brings comfort to the brokenhearted
In their mourning and sadness at spiritual state,
Releases captives and frees prisoners 1d
We are set free from bondage to satan
Galatians 5:1 NKJV
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
Christ frees us from the bondage to our flesh and sin nature
He paid the price to save us and as our new owner, He then frees us
Freedom is liberty within bounds: liberty to obey holy laws, liberty to keep the commandments of Christ, to serve mankind, to develop to the full all the latent possibilities within our redeemed natures. True Christian liberty never sets us free to indulge our lusts or to follow our fallen impulses.2

iv. transforms ashes into beauty, sorry into joy, and despair into praise
Interesting note: Jesus stopped in the middle of v. 2 when reading this passage. The rest of the chapter was for later and was NOT fulfilled that day in the synagogue.
Isaiah 51:2–3 NKJV
Look to Abraham your father, And to Sarah who bore you; For I called him alone, And blessed him and increased him.” For the Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, And her desert like the garden of the Lord; Joy and gladness will be found in it, Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.
In the future Kingdom, He will make Israel like Eden!
The Renewed Land (Isiah 61:4-11)
Messiah will renew Israel
A. Rebuild her Cities
Isaiah 61:4 NKJV
And they shall rebuild the old ruins, They shall raise up the former desolations, And they shall repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations.
Though long in ruins, cities will be rebuilt and thrive!
B. Gentiles Serve
Isaiah 61:5 NKJV
Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, And the sons of the foreigner Shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
The whole world will flock to serve
C. Serve as a Priestly Nation
Isaiah 61:6 NKJV
But you shall be named the priests of the Lord, They shall call you the servants of our God. You shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, And in their glory you shall boast.
They will fulfil their purpose of being a nations of priests for the Lord
Israel always had a worldwide mission
They were to be a light to the world which drew in gentiles to Believe in and follow the Lord
In the Kingdom, they will fulfil that purpose
D. Reproach replaced with Great honor
Isaiah 61:7–9 NKJV
Instead of your shame you shall have double honor, And instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; Everlasting joy shall be theirs. “For I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery for burnt offering; I will direct their work in truth, And will make with them an everlasting covenant. Their descendants shall be known among the Gentiles, And their offspring among the people. All who see them shall acknowledge them, That they are the posterity whom the Lord has blessed.”
The shame of the past will be washed away
God will bless them
E. A nation of Praise
Isaiah 61:10–11 NKJV
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its bud, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
In The Coming Kingdom we will join with them and worship the Lord!
App: We are also given and assignment
God sends us to serve:
As ambassadors
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 NKJV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
We are transformed by Jesus
new creature
made new and restored like the wilderness and ruins of Israel made new
When we are saved, God recreates us into what He always planned for us to be.
All old things are gone
He replaces them with new things!
We carry the good news of salvation through Jesus
That is the word and ministry of reconciliation!
We carry that message to the whole world:
God loves them
He wants to be reconciled with them
He did all the heavy lifting to accomplish salvation
We carry out the Great Commission to
make disciples
baptise them
teach them
As ministers
We are to serve Him by
serving each other
within the family of God, we are to carry each others burdens
We are to Meet each others needs
Our neighbors
It doesn’t end there!
We are told by jesus that the second greatest commandment is to love our neighbor as ourselves
Our charity extends beyond us, our family, our church and to the whole world.
