Title: The reason for the season
Text: Hebrews 10:1-10
Intro: Its Christmas Season and everyone is scurrying around getting ready for Christmas, purchasing presents for loved ones. I heard the other day that Amazon hired 200,000 new workers just to ship purchased items. Santa I hear is busy at work, the realization of Christmas is that it costly. It cost Santa’s elves sweat from there brow, a watch a man swallow a lump in his throat as he decided to purchase a lovely diamond pendant for his wife. But as costly as Christmas is, it has never cost any of us what it a cost a baby born in Bethlehem. While just a few seconds old, Jesus was wrapped in Swaddling Clothes, long strips of clothes used to keep the baby secure and to prohibit movement. In fact, Jewish tradition tells us that this was the same type of wrappings used to burry the dead. From birth there is the Picture that Christmas cost Jesus greatly, much suffering and ultimately His precious life.
During the time of the writing of this book (64-69), the temple and its sacrifices were in operation, Jewish Believers were facing great persecution from Nero and Pious Jews. Many of these believers sought to return to Judaism, but there was a problem, Jesus had come and fulfilled the requirements of the Levitical Law. It was replaced by the blood of Jesus. In fact From Chapter 9:23 -10:33 the theme is “THE BETTER SACRIFCE”
CPS: Jesus was born into this world to do the will of God, by offering His life as the eternal substitutionary sacrifice for the sins of the world. He was born to die!
Jesus was born into this world to die, because the Law was insufficient for eternal Salvation Vs. 1-4
The Law of sacrifice explained
Atonement = covering
Leviticus 17:11
ILL. Imagine if we had to offer sacrifices today, do you think we would think differently of our sin? As you slay, skin, and cut the sacrifice up you would be reminded that this should be you as a result of your guilt. But the grace of God allows a substitute on your behalf.
The Law of Sacrifice inadequate
Shadow – Skian = Image
Col. 1:15
The Law was for the reemergence of sin not the remission of sin
ILL. It’s like when I eat Spaghetti, I always get sauce on my white shirt. My wife bleaches the stains out but then I eat Spaghetti again and we have to bleach the shirt again. The bleach is good for washing but not good for keeping it clean.
ILL. It dealt the external not the eternal. You see the Law and its sacrifices was just a band-aid over an open wound. It can’t heal sin it can only cover it.
Transition: But One would come into this world whose Blood would appease God and do what the Law could not do, finish the work of Salvation. Eternally.
Jesus was born into this world to die, because only the blood of Jesus is sufficient for eternal salvation Vs. 5-10
The Law of Sacrifice was not God’s delight
Direct Quote Psalm 40:6-8
1 Sam 15:22 Obedience is better than Sacrifice
Psalm 51:16-17 The sacrifices of God is a broken spirit and contrite heart.
ILL. You could take all the prescribed offerings of the Law, all the Bulls, all the Lambs, all the Goats, all the Turtle Doves in the whole entire world. Slay them and pour their blood on the ground, it would form a vast river of blood like the Mississippi. It would not accomplish what the life blood of Jesus did on Calvary’s cross.
Jesus was God’s Delight
Jesus came to do God’s will. John 6:38
Fulfilled the Old Covenant and ushered in the New Covenant
Jesus made atonement Once and for All
It is finished.
Conclusion: What is the reason for the Christmas Season? Jesus was born into this world to offer His life as the perfect sacrifice for the remittance of our sin.
Upon His death Jesus appear in the presence of God on our behalf. So that by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ Jesus alone our sins are removed from us forever and God no longer see us the sinner but the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
