Last week I began a mini series leading up to Christmas, I preached "the Messiah come into the world" Mathew 1:18-24. It was some what topical 1st Jesus is Messiah because of His birth. 2nd Jesus is Messiah because of His anointing. 3rd Jesus is Messiah because of His resurrection. This Sunday I will preach the reason for the incarnation of Jesus, "The purpose for the Messiah in this world."
The Purpose of God preparing a body for Jesus.
The purpose for Jesus to come into this world was to die as a sacrificial death to fulfill the requirement of the Levitical Sacrificial System.
The author of Hebrews is unknown but whoever it was had a vast knowledge of the Old Testament. It was written from Rome during the reign and persecution of Nero. It's audience was more than likely Hebrew believers in the east who knew Timothy. It was written to show Hebrew believers the superiority of Christ and to show that the Levitical system was fulfilled in Christ our High Priest of the perfect order. It was designed as a warning of falling away from Christian perfection and back into Jewish Legalism. This letter is also an encouragement to those who have been persecuted because of their faith.
Theme: Perfection in Christ
Key Verse: "Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us move on to perfection." Hebrews 6:1
Key words and Idea's:
(BETTER) - Jesus is better than the Angels (1:4), Jesus has given us better things (6:9), is symbolized by a better person (7:7), offers a better hope (7:19), has a better covenant (7:22; 8:6a), with better promises (7:6), ***offered a better sacrifice (9:23), gives us better possessions (10:34), a better country (11:16), a better resurrection (11:35), the shedding of better blood (12:24) THE BLOOD OF THE SPOTLESS LAMB OF GOD!!!
(Eternal) - Christianity also provides an eternal salvation (5:9), warns of eternal judgement (6:2) for those who reject it; gives eternal redemption (9:12) to those who accept it, which is applied by His eternal Spirit (9:14), gives to us an eternal inheritance (9:15), which comes through an eternal covenant (13:20).
(Once) for all - The finality of Christianity is summed up in one phrase; "once for all" Regarding "once for all" salvation, Hebrews says; We were "once for all" enlighten to it (6:4), Jesus entered, once for all, into the Holy Place to obtain it (9:12). He once for all, put away our sins (9:26). We will face, "once for all" judgment with out it(9:27), He offered Himself, once for all, to bear our sins (9:28), *****He purged our sins, once for all, by it (10:2). he offered his body, once for all, for our sins (10:10)****

1st The reasons listed in Vs. 1 and Vs 4 are important to this text. These seem to act as bookends. "The Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins." That is why they WERE offered continually if it had been possible for the blood of Bulls and Goats to take away sin the sacrifices would have ceased, because the worshiper would have been perfected by their sacrifice according to faith. But since it is impossible for this sacrifice to take away sin they had a consciousness of sin by their yearly sacrifices.
The temple and the sacrifices according to the Levitical law were not the true form it was only a picture of Christ Jesus. The temple on earth was a replicate of that in heaven and the sacrifices on the earthly alter faded therefore the worshipers sin would reappear before God.
2nd. The action of Jesus "when He comes into the world" (vs.5a) in the body God prepared for Him (vs.5b). That He would COME to do the WILL of God (vs.7) Behold (look and see) I have COME to do God's WILL (vs.9). This will brings Salvation once and for all (eternal) (Vs.10)
1. Shadow 1x = skian of God (Image of God) "He is the image of the invisible God, the first born of all creation." Col. 1:15. The Levitical Law and it's offering are a picture of Christ coming. The Law gives only a dim outline of the good things to come, (Christ Jesus and His atonement)
2. Sacrifice/Sacrifices 5x = Mode of offering
3. Offered = prospherousin (3x) to bring/carry and offering vs.1,2,8
4. Burnt Offering = holokautōma Whole Burnt Offerings
Sacrifices and Offerings - this is an element brought to God by the worshipper to express devotion, thanksgiving, and the need for the forgiveness of sin. The way in which the Levitical law taught one to approach God.
The one bringing the animal offering was to lay a hand on the animal, indicating that the animal was taking the person’s place, and then he was to kill it.
The sacrificial system taught the necessity of dealing with sin and, at the same time, demonstrated that God had provided a way for dealing with sin.
6. Sin = hamartia 5x - offence/ to miss the mark/ anything that brings separation from God.
7. Will - want/ God's desire
8. Blood - the life of an organism
