Mark 10:32-45“The Disciple’s Great Misunderstanding”
Intro: A small boy and his sister were riding on the back of their new wooded rocking horse that was given to them as a present. Suddenly the boy turned to his sister and said: “if one of us would get off there would be more room for me.”
This is the attitude of the world, it’s all about me! In our text it seems to be the attitude of the disciples and if we were honest with ourselves today we would admit that far too often our attitude is the same. What a tragedy for those saved by grace through faith, we miss out on the blessing of serving Jesus and others out of pure motives.
CPS: Its time we put aside our worldly desires and reach our kingdom potential, that we surrender ourselves to Jesus’ will and follow His example set before us in this text and become humble servants of Christ for the Glory of Christ!
The Purpose of The Christ 32-34
Jesus and the 12 are headed to Jerusalem where in about a week’s time He would hang on a cross in order to fulfill the will of God, finish the work of salvation for all mankind. Jesus has made two predictions of His passion, in Mark 8:31 Jesus emphasizes the necessity for His death, burial, and Resurrection “The Son of Man MUST suffer many things.” In Mark 9:31 Jesus emphasizes reality of His death, burial, and resurrection “They SHALL kill Him.” Now, Jesus is now begins to emphasize the cruelty of His cross.
The Cruelty of the Cross
(Mocked, Scourged, Insulted, Killed)
He suffered this for our sake because He loved us and desires for us to have forgiveness of our sin so that we can spend eternity with Him.
The Sovereignty of the Cross
The cross didn’t take Jesus by surprise it was the sovereign will of God, ordained before the foundation of the world, notice Jesus describes the events to a tee. He knew exactly what would happen because He has the mind of God, He is God who came in the flesh. Jesus wasn’t He a victim of circumstances nor was He a martyr for a cause. The Cross was Jesus’ doing, His design and His decision. Jesus’ life was not taken from Hum, He wasn’t snubbed out by the Jews HE WAS IN CHARGE! Jesus said, (speaking of His death) “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.”
IIL: There was little boy whose sister needed a blood transfusion. She had the same disease the boy had recovered from two years earlier and her only chance for recovery was a transfusion from someone who had previously conquered the disease. Since the two children had the same rare blood type, the boy was the ideal donor. “Would you give your blood to Mary?” the doctor asked. Johnny hesitated. His lower lip started to tremble. Then he smiled and said, “Sure, for my sister.” Soon the two children were wheeled into the hospital room—Mary, pale and thin; Johnny, robust and healthy. Neither spoke, but when their eyes met, Johnny grinned. As the nurse inserted the needle into his arm, Johnny’s smile faded. He watched the blood flow through the tube. With the ordeal almost over, his voice, slightly shaky, broke the silence. “Doctor, when do I die?’ Only then did the doctor realize why Johnny had hesitated, why his lip had trembled when he’d agreed to donate his blood. He thought giving his blood meant giving up his life. In that brief moment, he’d made his great decision. Johnny, fortunately, didn’t have to die to save his sister. However, Mankind has a condition more serious and it required Jesus to give not just His blood but His life. Unlike, the little boy, Jesus didn’t hesitate He stretched out His arms WILLIGLY and died for the sins of the World!
The Hope of the Cross
John 10:18 finishes “I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again!” Jesus didn’t stay dead but arpose on the third day! Glory Halleluiah! I want to you to know today that Jesus died for you and arose from the dead for you and He is alive still today and He is alive forever more! We often don’t live as though Jesus is alive, but I want you to know today that I serve a living Savior, He is in the word today. I know that He is living whatever men may say!
Jesus’ purpose was die for us and to rise for us and that’s enough for us. Therefore we should live outlives for Him!
The Disciple’s Desire 35-41
James and John’s request
As though Jesus purpose wasn’t enough for the Disciples John and James ask for a blank check, “do for us whatever we ask.” They didn’t get it, they didn’t understand Luke 18:34 “And they understood none of these things and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.” Their eyes were blind and their hearts were hard but before we give them a hard time we are the same way yet we look back at what has happened and by grace through faith we should understand what He did for us and all glory be to Him.
They thought Jesus was going up to Jerusalem to set up His eternal kingdom and they asked for the places of greatest honor. But in God’s economy suffering precedes glory and it seems that Matthew 19:28 wasn’t enough! “Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
The Lord’s Reply
Cup (potērion) is not simply a vessel that holds water, it means to suffer severely. In the O.T. Cup symbolizes suffering (Is. 51:17 = Cup of Wrath). Baptism (baptizō) means to be washed by emersion in a ceremonial way. But Jesus is not speaking about being dunked under the water He is talking about baptism by fire! In the O.T. Baptism is a picture of deluge and trouble!
His Cup and Baptism
His was to suffer God’s wrath for mankind not knowing what they were saying the said “we are able.”
Their Cup and Baptism
They would suffer great persecution James beheaded (Acts 12:1) John boiled alive in Tar and exiled to Patmos
The disciples’ Indignation
The 10 became angry with John and James because they secretly wanted the same thing, honor! THEY ALL WANTED TO BE IMPORTANT!
ILL: Daniel, Dewayne, and I having breakfast on top of hotel bein bedias. As we recalled the weeks ministry Dewayne asked, if the 12 were here today I wonder what they would be talking about. Daniel said “They would probably be arguing over who’s the greatest!
If we are not satisfied with Jesus alone, but seek anything more apart from Him and His promises we have wandered far away from the right path.
The Christ’ Example(42-45)
Greatness in this world’s economy
In this world the more important you are the more people serve you. This world attitude is the higher you are the more you can look down on those below you. Jesus uses’ an illustration pointing out how the Romans exercise dominion and authority, this is not God’s way
Greatness in God’s economy
Tthose who are great in the Kingdom are ministers (diakonos) or the one who serves! The greatest is the servant (doulos) or the slave of all In God’s economy the higher you get the more you serve.
Greatness Exemplified by Jesus
EVEN!!!! The Lord of Glory who laid aside His soverin right to rule and came to die for our sins. Ransom (lytro),s the price of release for someone under the control of another. Jesus entered into the slave market of sin and paid the purchase price for us through His blood. The one who was sinless for the many who were sinners
Con: The great misunderstanding is that it is not about me it’s about Him and His purpose to reach the lost and dying world! To serve doesn’t mean to bow down at every whim and desires of the lost world but to glorify God by giving people what they need most, Jesus! And, when we start serving Jesus the way He ought to be served we won’t worry about who will get the honor because we will realize its all to the Glory of God! Its not about be, its all about Him and His purpose.
