Title: Your part in Global evangelism
Text: Matthew 18:18-20
Intro: Greatest Gift ever given JESUS
Great Commission – to be taken seriously – the story of one who took it seriously
Lottie’s life:
Lottie’s letter:
CPS: How are you reaching the world with the Gospel?
Orientate audience to text; Resurrection – disciples were charged to go to Galilee where Jesus promised to meet them when then came to the certain mountain Jesus appeared to them and they fell at His feet and worshiped Him. (500 people, 1 Cor. 15:6)
Jesus gives them instructions to how He was going to build His Church.
3 instructions Jesus gives us
All Power is HisVs. 18
ĕxŏusia, ex-oo-see´-ah; - Authority
Jesus during His ministry always spoke and acted with authority and power. (Matt. 7:29. 11:27. 21:23).
We see this demonstrated time and time again
calmed the seas with His voice
casted out demons with words
called a dead man back to life
When He came to earth, He came in humility and meekness, shedding some of His divine attributes.
But, now He has resumed His role as the Son of Power. (yet to ascend but speaks as though it has already happened – it’s a certainty)
This power and authority are absolute (Complete and perfect)
boundless – heaven and earth,
it is timeless – everlasting to everlasting
The scope of it is not only the physical realm but it is also the Spiritual
Jesus has always been the first born of creation (Col. 1:15)
Now the work of Redemption is completed ….. having resurrected from the dead He became the first born of the dead.
And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Col 1:18.
He has authority to give eternal life to ALL whom God had given to Him (John 17:2)
Now there is a new creation….. The body of believers in which He is the head….. the church.
The church doesn’t consist of believing Jews alone but all who would believe in Him.
He alone has the power to give eternal life.
Transition: Because of this absolute power, Jesus has authority to issue His marching orders
Make disciples of All nationsVs. 19 - 20
Go therefore – because of my power and authority take my life giving words to all mankind. Tell your neighbor about me and go to the remotest parts of the earth and teach them about me.
The Cross is exclusive
The mission is all inclusive – ( )
2 verbs
Go - As you are going – as you are traveling
Teach or Make (most important) – make people pupils of Jesus
His orders are simple – go teach the people of earth about Me.
1st command Go
The Jews would have understood this “as you are going make” principle.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: 5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: 7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. 8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. 9 And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
Idea of - as you are doing life! Teach people about Me, to Love me!
This is more than evangelism – it is walking with and Living with.
The disciples certainly would have understood this method – because Jesus lived with them.
Jesus taught them to be obedient to His teachings.
Illustration: Billy Graham – crusades –
2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 2 Tim 2:2
2nd command Teach
Simplified – 2 greatest commands
Love God with Totality of being
What does this love look like?
God gives us an example in His unconditional love for us.
God didn’t say if they do this ______ or that _____ then I will love them.
Romans 5:8
As we do life with others, we are to instruct them to do the same…to love God unconditionally
Not if you do this ____ I will love you
Why is it important to Teach?
If we evangelize only, they are not mature and will fall into many traps and snares. You risk the possibility of the Gospel not lived out or passed out.
In remotest parts of the earth – fall away
Illustration: Malawi 1,000,000 people reached – so called hundreds of churches planted. Yet half of them are no more. Pandora’s box has been opened for Jehovah’s witnesses and the return to ancestral worship.
There is not a faithful Christian living amongst them and it is easy to return to old ways if there is not a firm foundation and a support group.
NB) As God told Israel in Deut. 6:10-14 – teach so when the people come into the promised land, they will not forget the Lord.
Each generation will know that you are to have no other gods besides me!
Love your neighbor as yourself
God is relational – Jesus’ teachings were ultimately How to have a right relationship with God and
How to have a right relationship with people
How much you love yourself? Think about it
How much of our effort is centered around the care and comforts of ourselves?
*** example questions ***
Imagine what our relationships would look like if we showered that love upon our neighbor, it would be pleasing to God.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.. Philippian 2:3-4
These two things encompass all of religion it has been the God’s design through His use of Moses, the prophets, the Savior, and the apostles.”
NB) teach these things
3rd command Baptize
Baptism (symbolic - explain participation in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection)
By our teachings people should understand they have died with Christ etc….
The Model is to duplicate yourself, bringing them into a *** Christian fellowship,*** and building them up in the faith.
He is Always with youVs. 20
What a promise!
Matthew ends his Gospel by centering on Jesus’s divine attributes and not the task He has given to His disciples.
Even though invisible to our eyes we can count on Jesus being with His disciples spiritually, until the day comes when we can see Him in this world again. His return.
The entire gospel of Matthew is framed by the reference to Immanuel – God with us
BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” Mt 1:23.
Ends saying the same, God with us.
Always πᾶς pas, pas – Idea of the whole thing
He will be with us in the days of great Joy that lay ahead when we see someone saved or when we see people grow in their faith. Faithful times
He will be with us in those times of weakness we can hardly get out of bed much less teach someone to follow Jesus. Unfaithful times
He will be with us during those days of sorrow when all our efforts seem to fail.
He is with us at all times, the whole time, never leaves us.
We must go out and obey His commission. Be on task, teach all nations to follow after Jesus.
But the final word of the gospel remains Christ-centeredness.
Even when we fail He is faithful.
.
Application: Are you a part of this Kingdom?
Has this power of eternal life fallen on you?
If not – I encourage you to call upon His name – He will bring you from death to life.
If so – Jesus is the King of your kingdom, rule and authority belongs to Him alone, and you are to be obedient?
How are we do obey this?
There is an obstacle (our culture it’s our society)
We believers are all called to be missionaries, but unlike Jesus we have a pillow to lay our head.
Unlike Paul (the greatest) We live in one or two places our whole life.
Paul set the example, He took the Gospel to the ends of the earth, as He lived He went.
He set up shop in Corinth and made tents and preached the Gospel.
He made disciples in Ephesus, He took his skill to make tents on the road and supported himself as he taught people to follow Jesus.
He had plans to go to Spain, as far east as you could go. The uttermost parts of the world, some believe he made it there others say his death in Rome kept him from there.
Question?
What are your skills? What means has God given you to provide for yourself and family?
Teacher – Coal miner – Pulpwood trucker – Nurse – secretary
Will you take your skills on the Road?
Will you go to Bangladesh India and use your talents to support you as you preach the Gospel as you make disciples?
What about Somalia – Bangkok etc…
We have a hard-enough time committing to making disciples right here I the safe and secure U.S.A,
Right here in Bell county.
But there are 3,667 SBC missionaries on the field right now doing just that…. making disciples.
Many of them have sold all they owned to help support their ministry
They are amongst 811 people groups but there are still 3,200 people groups unreached.
Many of these missionaries are using the skills to help support them, but it isn’t enough to support 30,815 churches planted
Many are in places so impoverished there isn’t use for their skills.
Most are so busy with ministry they are unable to provide for themselves; and the people or lack of, can’t fund a starting ministry.
Individually we can’t carry this out. Corporately we can! United as one body, one mind, one heart, with one intention ….. The Gospel can reach all the people of the world.
You may not be willing or able to go to these remote places on earth, but we can pray for them and we can give to support their ministry.
I always say, you can tell where someone’s heart is by looking at their checkbook.
