Title: The Word of God in our lives
Text: 2 Timothy 3:16 & 17
Intro: My family owns a Jewelry Store in Tifton and as a child I wanted to be just like my father a Master Jeweler. It was just dad and I and so I spent a lot of time in the store. While my father would repair jewelry and fabricate rings out of gold, I would fabricate rings from paper clips and balled up pieces of construction paper.
When I returned home from the service, I became my father’s apprentice. There was one problem, I wanted to be a master jeweler, but I did not want to put in the time it took to learn how to become a Master Jeweler. My father wanted me to grow in my talent and skill set so I could be the best jeweler I could possibly be, capable of handling every job that came through our doors.
That’s the same problem we often see in Christianity, we want to identify with Christianity, but we don’t want to train to become mature Christians. We don’t want to take the time to grow in righteousness so we can be well equipped in life.
Just as my father wanted to teach me to become a great jeweler, capable of handling all jobs that came in. How much more does our Father in heaven want us to become mature and effective Christians who are equipped to do the good works He has planned for us?
Orientate Scripture:
Author/setting
Recipient
The Church: Ephesus
Problems in the Church: False teaching
The answer: The Word of God
CPS: The Word of God is essential to the Christian who is called to spiritual maturity and to be an effective servant of Christ Jesus.
Scripture is inspired of God Vs. 16 A
General Revelation
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Ro. 1:19-20
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Ps. 19:1
Trans: Isn’t it wonderful that our God in not simply a general type of God but One who delights in revealing Himself to wayward Humans!
Specific Revelation
Revelation = to be made known
Creation, the fall, His nature, our nature, our status, unfolding plan of redemption
Inspiration
Inspired = Theopneustos Theos (God) Pneuma (Spirit) Lit. Breathed out by God
It’s the same Idea of God forming Adam from the dust of the ground and breathing life into Him.
Duel Authorship/ Verbal Plenary
Define - - - - - - - - Free of all fallacy and error
Explain
Great paradox - Jesus - Trinity
Ill. Robert Plummer, in his book 40 Questions About Interpreting the Bible relates dual authorship to the incarnation of Christ Jesus. Stating that just as Mary remained a human mother and her experience through gestation and delivery of Jesus would appear to have been those of every mother – except there wasn’t a human father. The Holy Spirit was the appointed Agent. Like our Lord Jesus Christ who is both fully human and fully God the Scriptures are divinely inspired and yet also a word chosen by a human author.
What scripture
Hebrew text – Sacred writings (vs.15)
NT
ALL OF IT!
App. Perfect/ infallible/inerrant – We can trust it and stand on it knowing that it is the final authority on doctrine and deed.
We must seek out universals truths found in the Scriptures rightly dividing it and applying it to our lives!
Context, context, context
Transition: When applied to our lives we as a fallen race profit from it.
Scripture is profitable for mankindVs. 16B
Profit – ōphelimos useful, beneficial
Ill. Physical exercise – Bodily exercise profits the body! Strength, definition, stamina, healthy heart, endorphins
How much more does spiritual exercise profit a person?
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Tim. 4:8
One day our bodies will fail, die and decay – then all that work will be undone! But godliness will never be undone – you will receive the crown of righteousness
Doctrine – what’ s right
Teach or instruct
The truth – problem with falsehood in Ephesus and the problem with falsehood today. – relativeness
Paul tells young Timothy that the Scriptures should formulate how one thinks! Because how one thinks is how one will act!
If you dwell on the things that are false you will oppose what is true. If you dwell on lewd thoughts you will act lewdly.
Paul exhorts Young Timothy to teach Good doctrine the doctrine that he learned from the Apostle.
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. 2 Tim. 2:2
Application: Friends we must be zealous for good doctrine in a world that is full of false doctrine. We must be Bereans (Acts 17) and examine for ourselves the things of God that are taught to us.
Reproof – what’s not right
Scripture exposes errors in our thoughts, hearts, words, and actions. It reveals sin in your life and it rebukes your sin.
Illustration: It sets boundaries. It’s like an umpire in your little league baseball game who shouts “Strike” or “Foul Ball.” It sets boundaries like those down the 1st and 3rd base lines.
Don’t hit the ball out of bounds its foul ball and it is of no use.
Application: Sin is of no use to mankind!
Correction – How to get it right
After Scripture convicts the heart it shows people how to turn to Him.
Repentance and faith - means of salvation and unbroken fellowship with God.
You can’t get it right if you’re not right with Him!
Application: God’s word helps us clean out sin and teaches us to do the things that are excellent and pleasing to Him. It puts us on the straight path.
Training in righteousness How to keep it right
Salvation is not the end but the beginning – God calls for us to live a life devoted to Him that He may be glorified in us.
Application: Scripture is a plumb line - Reference line to ensure a structure is centered
Is your life centered in the Word of God?
Does your Christian life measure up?
DO you remember how Jesus prayed for His disciples the night He was arrested? - John 17:17
Romans 12:2, 2 Cor. 10:5, Josh. 1:8
Study the Scriptures daily, meditate on them night and day, live by them you will profit greatly! They are the final authority on doctrine and deed and they are the primary means of growing into a mature Christian.
Scripture is for equipping mankind for good works. Vs. 17
Climax!
Man of God – Anthropos Theos = Timothy and the Christian
Purpose for your salvation…. You have a purpose!
Maturity
Perfect = Complete – you are called to lack nothing! THIS IS HOW WE PROFIT that we live a life reflecting the image of Christ in us!
Service
Restored us so that others may be restored
We become mature so we can lead others to maturity
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Eph. 2:9-10
Equipped to carry out His good work… able to handle every circumstance that comes our way.
App.
Lead the lost into salvation
Be a loving friend to the one who needs a loving friend
Rejoice with those who rejoice
Weep with those who weep
Lovingly call out sin around us
Encourage those who need encouraging
Feed those who are physically hungry
Feed those who are spiritually hungry
Conclusion: Inspiration/Profits/Works - **hammer**
Just as my father wanted me to a capable Jeweler able to handle every situation that came into our store. GOD WANTS US TO BE A CAPABLE CHRISTIAN MATURE AND EQUPPED TO HANDLE EVERYTHING LIFE WILL THROW AT US.
