Text: Heb. 11:23-29
Title: Moved by Faith
One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, “Jump! I’ll catch you.” He knew the boy had to jump to save his life. All the boy could see, however, was flame, smoke, and blackness. As can be imagined, he was afraid to leave the roof. His father kept yelling: “Jump! I will catch you.” But the boy protested, “Daddy, I can’t see you.” The father replied, “But I can see you and that’s all that matters.”
These past three weeks I have shared with you that faith is stepping out on the unseen and landing on the solid rock. Do you think the boy jumped? Do you think the boy envisioned his dad catching him as he fell through the smoke.
The lesson found in Hebrews 11 is that though God is not seen, people stepped out in faith trusting that He was in fact there with arms. These early Hebrew Christians who were persecuted were encouraged to continue on in faith though they couldn't see their deliverance nor their deliverer but He saw them and all along held them in His righteous right hand.
Did the boy’s faith in his father to catch him move him to action, jump? Would you have trusted your father to catch you? Then how much more are we to trust our Heavenly Father!
CPS: Our faith in God should propel us to action. Are you propelled to act on faith even when the circumstances seem impossible.
I. Moses Parents were moved to act according to faith. Vs. 23 Exodus 2:2-9
Acts 7:20
The words “by faith” is the Idea of being Prompted by faith in God to act as seen in the actions of Amram and Jochebed (Ex. 6:20) the parents of Moses.
A. The Child Hidden
The child was seen as “proper,” goodly, or beautiful means more than his appearance. They realized through faith that Moses was not an ordinary Child but one destined under God to accomplish great things for His people.
B. The Edict Disregarded
They trusted and obeyed God over the king of Egypt, trusting God to save Moses. We are to obey government rule until they ask us to give what is rightly God’s. (Rom. 13)
Basket = te-ba - ARK (Gen. 7:1).
Seeing that God had a purpose for Moses life, they endangered there own trusting God that He would save and use their son.
II. Moses was moved to act according to faith. Vs. 23-28 Ex. 2:10-15
A. By faith [aroused] Moses gave up the riches of Egypt for the reward of Christ.
•Gave up the Royalty (perhaps was Pharaoh's heir)
•Gave up the pleasure Why? How? (His mom raised him right) [Credit card Illustration]
•Gave up the treasure (Phil. 3) [He was storing up treasures in heaven]
B. By faith [motivated] Moses didn't fear the king but saw the invisible God.
C. By faith (simple trust) Moses carried out God’s command
III. The people were moved to act according to faith. Vs. 29 (Ex. 14:21-31]
Urged on by faith the people acted during a time and circumstance of seeming impossibility.
- The hand [perhaps due to Moses’ example]
- The dry land
Application: What about you?!?
