Isaiah Chapter 6
Isaiah is discouraged for two reasons
His King is dead vs. 1-4
Where was He? Temple – train of His robe (refers to the hem.) filled the temple – vs. 4 filling the temple with smoke.
What was He doing?
Vs 1. Who is King Uzziah? Good king
Son of Amaziah brother of Amoz who is father of Isaiah (2 Kings 9:2) making them 1st cousins
His king is dead and now the future is uncertain.
What will the next king be like
Isaiah is the king’s prophet…. Kind of like Nathaniel was to David (confronted him)
Could he be worried? Possibly so.
God comforts Isaiah by allowing him to see Him. – He saw Him high and lifted up.
NB) also saw Him seated on His thrown.
He sees God’s sovereignty- God is not fretting over who will be the next king, not pacing back and forth – He knew –
“I AM the King” - Me I AM the Sovereign – no need for worry
Application: - We can find comfort also Psalm 46:10 stop waging war – be still I Am God.
Donald Trump – Hillary – Rubio – they are not the Savior GOD!
What does Isaiah see: God’s Sovereignty
Vs. 2-4 See’s
Seraphim (2 types Seraphim * worshiping Angels* and Cherubim *warrior angels* Jesus could have called 12 legions (5,000 per legion 60,000 at Calvary ) SIX WINGS
Responding to God’s holiness – 2 wings Covered their faces (Eyes)
Responding to God’s kingship – 2 wings covered their feet (Dr. Ditty)
Their service – 2 wings they flew
Declare God’s holiness – proclaimed God to be holy holy holy 3 times is saying Absolute full of holiness
Saw God’s power – The foundation of the temple shook
Saw God’s pervasiveness – smoke filled the room
Illustration – smoke gets into every little cranny -house fire in the front of the house – smoke gets into closed chest of drawer and stains drawers and clothes.
Latches a hold of things and gets into nooks and crannies.
What does that tell us – God fills every part of the world at all times
(NB – we will see Isaiahs) We are never out of the presence of God – what does our relationship look like?
Who is this? John 12: 37- 42 Jesus (Him)!
Isaiah is discouraged because he sees His unworthiness vs. 5-7
He saw the Lord, then He saw himself
Vs.5 Woe is me (woe = certainty of Judgment)
Isaiah is calling judgment on Himself
I am ruined… (dmh) to be destroyed
Unclean (lips) ta-me - ceremonial unclean – unfit for sacrificial use, worship or service - we need to hear, our sin nature is strong
What does this mean – spoke ugly words? Jesus says its not what enters into us that defiles but what comes out.
Matt. 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.
Isaiah is saying “I am not a righteous man and now I stand before God”
My eyes has seen THE KING – Back to vs. 1 THE KING IS NOT DEAD but very much a live
Lord of Host – Yahweh Saoboth, Lord of Heavenly host. Military, serive, warefare – the One to be feared.
EVERY FLAW IS SHOWN TO ISAIAH BECAUSE HE HAS CAME INTO AN AWESOME LIGHT
Illustration – Pottery
God’s response –
Vs. 6 God touches Isaiah at his point of need – forgiveness
We need forgiveness don’t we – we are unrighteous – can be made the righteousness of God
A painful experience as coals touched his lips
NB) note: confession of uncleanness was a recognition of need * Isaiah doesn’t say forgive me but destroy me!
And God responds!
Vs. 7 Guilt is removed …. God’s response to the repentant heart
Sin is atoned…. Forgiven as with a sacrifice though none was given here.
Took a piece of coal off of the alter of burnt offerings – it had been covered in blood over and over again – it was holy – seraphim picked it up with tongs – couldn’t touch the coal
?(Seraphim – fire serpents)?
God Responded to Isaiah as David said he would- Psalm 51 sacrifice of the Lord is a broken and contrite heart.
Application: Our sin needs to break us
End Result
He is listening to God’s conversation – Go for…. Us
Isaiah is listening to his Master, Owner, the Sov. King
Unknown – Isaiah doesn’t know the mission but he answers before he hears it
It doesn’t matter what the calling is I am dedicated!
God’s calling is to go - man’s objection is I should stay.
God has a need and the prophet has a desire to help
God meet that need, this is a picture of unconditional surrender
Vs. 11 How long? “Until I’m done”
Isaiah will never see that day so he will keep working to the end.
Application: Are we committed
I am guilty
Ashamed of what I've done, what I've become
These hands are dirty
I dare not lift them up to the Holy one
You plead my cause
You right my wrongs
You break my chains
You overcome
You gave Your life
To give me mine
You say that I am free
How can it be
How can it be
