Title: A renewed life.
Text: Mark 5:22-24 & 35-43
Intro: 3rd person we encounter with a uncurable condition: Death. Each hopeless in different ways but hopeless none the less. Each finding hope – a future in Jesus.
CPS: Faith in Jesus brings renewed life and changes are evidence in hope found in Jesus.
Desperation of a father Vs. 22-24
Desperate
my little daughter lieth at the point of death
It is only natural for us to love or children and when one of your children are sick there is a sense of desperation –
Illustration: when my boys are sick with a fever I set my alarm clock through out the night for every couple of hours to wake me up so I can check on them and give them medicine.
I could not imagine what a parent would go through having a child deathly sick
Emotional Grief: Worried about the future what it would hold-
Sleepless nights - highs and lows and being unable to control them – roller coaster of emotions
Depression -
Physical Grief: Have you ever worried yourself to sickness?
I have, it is the worst physical sickness I have experienced
Anxiety – Nervousness, Panic, Increased heart rate, hyperventilation, great fatigue, concentration issues, difficulty controlling your stomach, nausea vomiting, and can make you break out in hives.
Spiritual Grief: Why questions – Why God – can make you doubt your beliefs
It can also change your beliefs
Draw you to God:
Demonstrated Courageous
One of the rulers of a synagogue – typically a lay person who saw or helped see over worship and teaching, perhaps had responsibility for the building.
Religious leader – during a time when most religious leaders were set out to destroy Jesus and His teachings.
It took a great deal of courage for Jairus to come to Jesus, for many of the religious leaders were bent on destroying Him. But his love for his dying daughter forced him to lay aside his prejudices and go to Jesus.
The ground is level at the feet of Jesus, for all who have burdens meet there.
Demonstrated Faith
When he saw Jesus, he fell at His feet – idea of throwing himself down at the feet of Jesus
We see this in all 3 accounts in this chapter, Demonic, Suffering Woman, and now Jairus.
Verb “besought- Idea begging eagerly
His request was simply – “come lay your hands of my daughter”
He knew something was different about Jesus – heard of Him teaching, preaching, and acting with authority.
Faith – she may be healed and that she shall live.
Shall – there is no other out come
Jesus went with him – He could have healed her from afar – Jesus loves His people and goes the extra mile to show His love and compassion.
Death of a little girl Vs. 35-36
Hopelessness
Messengers came and told Jairus “THY DAUGHTER IS DEAD, why troublest the Master”
There is nothing to look forward too
“It is hopeless, it’s too late, nothing can be done.
There is no one who can heal her now!
NB) in order for a miracle to take place conditions have to be favorable for a miracle to occur, No one who comes to Jesus in faith walks away in a hopeless state!
He is the definition and source of Hope – Future vision – without Jesus you are hopeless with Jesus there is always hope.
Hope with Jesus
Jesus overheard the conversation and He turned to Jairus and said Be not afraid only believe
“Don’t be frightened or anxious”
ONLY” believe
Only – that alone
Believe – Have faith
BE OF FAITH ALONE!
The bible says there is only one who can conquer death – His name is Jesus –
He is the giver of life, all things find there beginning with Him
He is builder of the foundation of the world.
He is the voice who said “let there be light”
He is the breath that blew into the dust
He is the one who commands the morning
He is the bread of life
He is the way, the truth, and the Life!
When everything seems to be falling apart around us, and even our friends discourage us, all we can do is cling by faith to the promises of God.
“Be not afraid only believe”
There is always hope in Jesus
Deliverance of the father
He came
He comes to the house of Jairus
The weepers had already assembled – professional mourners –
Sad “what do you do for a living, I am a professional mourner” I will come to your house and cry and wail with you for only a small wage or gift.
This was a way for unmarried women and widows to earn money.
The bible says “we are to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice”
They were not sincere.
Jesus arrived he asked, “why do you weep and make all this commotion” the girl is only sleeping.
They laughed Him to scorn
Jesus saying “Sleeping” is a euphemism for dead
He is not saying she is only unconscious or in Acoma
Don’t you think a mother would know!
She is dead there is no life in her, but Jesus knew what was about to happen!
He commanded
Took the parents and disciples and entered the room where the girl was
He took her by the hand – isn’t the compassion of Jesus wonderful
And He said to her in Aramaic Taleetha Cume
He commanded her to rise up.
He conquered
Immediately – instantaneously she arose from the dead!
Jesus conquered death by speaking words!
How can He do that? He is God
He delivered this young girl from the clutches of death.
At this the parents and the disciples were beyond astonished.
They had seen Him cast demons, heal people, calm storms, but never had they seen anything like this.
Conclusion: The desperate father finds deliverance in Jesus and a little girl finds herself delivered from a desperate state.
Application: There is a someone we can all go to no matter what comes our way
But we have a responsibility and that is to throw ourselves down at the cross of Jesus in faith and courageously ask Him to help us.
There is nothing we can do to help change the state we are in.
As this little girl lay perishing we without Jesus are perishing.
But God desires none to perish but all to come to Him in faith.
We come hopeless but He becomes our hope, by the great love in which He loved us.
He tells us do not be afraid only believe, cast your worries on Him trusting Him to lift you up.
Lay your total weight on Him (****CHAIR****)
Pass from death into a newness of life
Jesus says to us: ARISE….. Arise from the dead…. Because we are dead in trespass and sin and called walk in a newness of life.
When we are saved there is something different about us. There is an evidence of our newness, here we see a dead girl rise and get out of a bed and walk.
What does our evidence look like?
Is it our worship?!!!!?
Context: chapter 5
We find three different scenarios
A Demonic Gentile man with thousands of Demons in Him
A plagued beggar woman who has been unclean for 12 years
12 year old Jewish girl dead in a bed
We have the walking dead, the soon to be dead, and the physical dead
All from different walks of life, people who society would not care about
But people who Jesus cared about
2 who threw themselves at the feet of Jesus and one whose father threw himself at the feet of Jesus.
Each having 2 things in common: hopelessness and being born again.
An evil possessed man walked in the newness of life as a disciple of Jesus and the first Gentile missionary proclaiming to his family and friend the mercy and compassion Jesus showed him.
A plagued women whose faith said if I can only touch His outer garments: From a beggar to a worshiper.
A little girl dead who arose and walked!
Do you see the changes?
What changed in you?
Maybe you have said a prayer – but I ask you have you been born again and are you walking in a renewed life.
A renewed life given to us by Jesus only when we trust in Him!
---- Do you have a future in Jesus?
