The Gospel of Mark / Divorce / Mark 10:1–12
Divorce was not God's original design
Text: Mark 10:1-12
Title: God’s design for Marriage and divorce
Intro: I thought of how important the strength of a marriage is to children when I saw a quote by Pete Rose, Jr., recently. The betting scandal his father was in meant little to Petey. He still dwelt on his parents' years-old divorce. His father was remarried with a new child and another on the way. His mother was tending bar in Cincinnati. Petey is a better-than-average big league prospect himself playing 7 seasons in the minors and 1 in the majors,…. athletes at that stage in their careers are usually single-minded and driven. Yet Petey said something like this: "I would trade whatever future I have in big league baseball to see my parents get back together." It was as if he hadn't read the papers, didn't know the truth about his parents' marriage. Pete, Sr. had such an incredible reputation for chasing women, and such nasty, impossible-to-take-back things had been said by each about the other, that no one would give two cents for the possibility of any civility, let alone a reconciliation. And with Pete, Sr., remarried, there's no chance. Yet that comment from little Pete, if he were my son, would haunt me to my grave.
Orientate Scripture. Why was Jesus Tested?
CPS: God's design for marriage was an everlasting covenant but He permitted divorce because of the sinfulness of man as a way to protect the helpless.
I. The Design of Divorce Vs. 3-5
A. Permitted
Why was it permitted?
B. Protection
Who was it protecting?
Mal. 2:16
Divorce is the sin that keeps giving . Those who once cared for one another deeply are now hostile to each other. Moses had put into action obstacles to make Divorce exceedingly difficult. Now a day Divorce is exceedingly easier.

Problem!!!! People enter into marriage now days with the idea, “if it doesn’t work out there is always divorce!
What has not changed is that Divorce has victims. In Ancient Judaism the woman was the main victim now a days divorce is so prevalent that there are many victims, none as worse as the children.
Illustration: Fifty years ago parents were apt to have a lot of kids. Nowadays kids are apt to have a lot of parents.
Do you know what divorce is good for now? The toy business. 75% of divorcees remarry that means kids go from having 2 parents to 4 parents. 4 grandparents to eight grandparents.
four parents and eight grandparents tend to compete for children's affections, so they buy toys.
All the toys in the world will not give the Children their hearts desire. That is to have the shattered pieces which was once their family put back together.
I’m 41 years old and I still suffer a divorce that happened 39 years ago.
Pictures I got from Aunt Vic.
Application: Divorce is a scandal used to seemingly make two people happy, because that’s what God wants for us, right? NO!
He wants us to be holy..... Divorce is sin.
Hurting the one you pledged yourself to and hurting the ones you love most is not holiness it is selfishness.
II. The Design of Marriage Vs. 6-9
A. Coming together
What constitutes marriage? 1 Man 1 Woman uniting
Becoming one flesh
B. Lasting Covenant
Eternal coming together
Vs. 9 WHAT GOD JOINS
Marriage progressively brings couples into holiness. My Faults/Her strengths
You can divide a body in half. What happens if you try to divide a body in half? it dies, it’s not useful
Illustration: Henry Ford's sage advice when asked on his 50th wedding anniversary for his rule for marital bliss and longevity. He replied, "Just the same as in the automobile business, stick to one model."
Problem - Love doesn't mean anything anymore. What matters is personal happiness.
Love is sacrificial it does seek it’s own benefit but the benefit of the other. We see this example in Christ’s love for us. ..... Gospel!
Application: Eph 5:25 Husbands Love. Wife Submit. All to Christ’s authority.
Divorce occurs because we don’t love in the manner of Christ.
and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 1 Pe 2:23.
Are we trusting Jesus for our marriage?
Do we allow circumstance to dictate our contentment and happiness?
- fight/argue? H.A.L.T. Hungry. Angry, Lonely. Tired.

III. The Designation of Sin Vs.10-12
A. Eternality of Marriage
Illegitimacy of divorce in God’s eyes
B. Equality of Genders
Jewish custom was women could not divorce, men could not commit adultery by being unfaithful to their wives.
Jesus levels the gender playing field
Illustration: The church is called the bride of Christ. The church is likened to a marriage union. It’s an eternal covenant not to be broken. Jesus is always to His bride even when they are unfaithful to Him. When His bride rebels against Him (sins), forget about Him, Don’t spend time with Him, Don’t speak with Him, are angry with Him.... He never gives up on His bride and we should never give up on the one God has given to us.
Application: The Lord’s ways are not our ways, His standards are much higher and Jesus teaches a better way. It’s kingdom thinking.
If anyone has divorced they have sinned, God Hates sin.
If anyone remarries they have committed adultery, the have broken the 7th commandment.
There is hope, forgiveness of sin through the washing of the blood of Christ . God promises to remember your sin no more.
Conclusion: Divorce is not a victim less sin. Many suffer due to sin, God, you, spouse, the kids.
We must remember God’s design for marriage was an everlasting covenant but He permitted divorce only because of the sinfulness of man as a way to protect the helpless.
