Text: Mark 8:22-38
Title: Seeing clearly
Eye exam – Arm is not long enoughDilution …. Blur … gradually began to see clearly ….
Jesus had spent the past 6 months touring the countryside with the disciples mostly in quite places teaching them.
They witnessed Jesus healing a deaf and mute man….Now Jesus restores sight to a blind man…
IS THERE A CONNECTION from what we saw last week?
Mark 8:18 Do you have eyes yet …. Not see?
Mark 8:21 Don’t you understand yet?
Scripture indicates prophets acted out parables.
Isaiah 20:2-6…… God told Isaiah to stop mourning and strip off his sackcloth and sandals… Isaiah spent 3 years naked… God used this as an illustration to those who put their hope in Egypt and Cush… saying this is the way you will be sent into exile… barefoot and naked.
Jesus is a great teacher…….
Could Jesus be living out a parable… to convey a message otherwise they may not get?
The cross is drawing near (six months away) and Jesus is becoming more purposeful in His teaching to prepare them for His death and life after His sacrifice.
Jesus heals 7 blind men in the Gospel, but this healing is recorded in Mark alone, this is the only healing that came gradually…. Note at first his sight was blurry but after the second touch he saw clearly.
As I gradually began to see clearly … and gradually the bling man’s sight was restored … We gradually see the Spiritual things clearly … until one day we get it. We hear, see, and understand (speak?)
CPS:Are we seeing clearly?
Do we Recognize the true identity of Jesus? Vs. 27-30
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? 28 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. 30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.
(The object is to point out who the world says Jesus is but who do we understand Jesus to be.)
NOTE FOR J.C.: WHEN STUDYING ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS AND ANSWER THEM FOR YOURSELF
Popular Opinion
What is the popular opinion about who Jesus is? (go over each one and criticize) (J.t.B. preincarnationnot reincarnation)
What do people now days say about who Jesus is? (people in general, Muslims, J.W.)
Barna group poll:
The Vast Majority of Americans Believe Jesus Was a Real Person .. Historical figure- He actually lived (slightly more than 9 out of 10 people) He has been seen making cameos on T.V. shows and movie.
Percentage of people who believe He is God.Younger Generations Are Increasingly Less Likely to Believe Jesus Was God
56% of adults believe Jesus is God
The older you are the more likely you are to believe this
Elders 62%
Boomers 58%
Gen X 55%
Millennials 48%
Religious leader like Buddha
Peter
Peter proclaimed, “Thu art the Lord”
Is this when Peter first believed? (what does John’s gospel say?)
Matthew’s parallel
Flesh and blood did not reveal this to you but My Father.Matthew 16:17
How?
Who Jesus isHAMMER
Who is Jesus to you? Lord of all or not Lord at all
Transition: Now Peter professes Jesus as Lord, (His true Identity) now Jesus is ready to explain clearly to them what is going to happen.
Do we Recognize Jesus’ truepurposeVs. 31-33
31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly.
And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
(Jesus has the disciple’s attention and He begins to teach the disciples plainly about His purpose…the cross, But Peter still had preconceived notions about the Messiah)
Spoke OPENLY (Vs. 32) - Plainly
Jesus’ Purpose
How does Mark Portray Jesus the Son of God?
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Gospel of Jesus HAMMER
Will you recognize this?
Peter’s presupposition
What kind of Messiah were they looking for?
What kind of Messiah are the Jews still looking for?
Jesus’ rebuke
This must happen
Transition: It’s not that Peter didn’t believe, but His expectations were of an earthly Messiah, ruling. They were seeing more clearly, But true clarity wouldn’t come until after the resurrection.
Do we Recognize our true purpose in Jesus?
34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Consecration!!!!!!!
Who will chase after Jesus? (Vs.34A)
What must they do? (Vs.34B-37)
Are you living a life sacrificed on the alter of dedication?
If not what is keeping you from that? TRASH IT!!!!
Jesus’s purpose… to die for us that we may live
Our Purpose to live for Christ
Barna Poll: As much of our previous research shows, Americans’ dedication to Jesus is, in most cases, a mile wide and an inch deep.”
Conclusion: Are you seeing clearly?
Is Jesus Lord of all in your life? (Example: pocketbook, etc)
Have you accepted Jesus’ purpose for coming into this world?
Have you embraced your purpose as a follower of Jesus?
