Text: Mark 10:32-45
Title: A Great Misunderstanding
Intro: A small boy and his sister were riding on the back of their new wooded rocking horse that was given to them as a present. Suddenly the boy turned to his sister and said: “if one of us would get off there would be more room for me.”
This is our attitude isn’t it. Everything revolves around me. We see that this is also the attitude of the disciples even after living with Him all this time.
Orientation: Headed for Jerusalem, they would make just one more stop and that was in Jericho where Jesus would heal blind Bartimaeus.
CPS: Greatness in the Kingdom of God is the attitude of servitude and this is demonstrated by Jesus Himself.
I. The Master leads the way Vs. 32-34
Jesus preceded the group headed to Jerusalem
Jesus walked ahead of them
Illustration: Ft. Benning Ga. “follow me” “lead the way”
Those who followed were amazed
The Twelve (they were headed to Jerusalem where the king would sit forever)
The others
Jesus predicts what will happen while there.
Happen – This prediction is greater in detail than the other two. “suffer many things”
Delivered to the religious leaders to Condemn Him – Cast judgment on the Sinless Christ
Hand Him over to the Gentiles to execute Him – Because they wanted to celebrate Passover. HE IS THE PASSOVER LAMB!!!
Mock Him Spit on Him and Scourge Him
Cat-o-nine tail – Roman whip, barbed with lumps of lead and pieces of bone.
So vicious was this torture that victims often did not survive a scourging. Victims lost so much blood that they went into hypovolemic shock. Their heart would speed up trying to compensate for the loss of blood; the blood pressure would drop, making the victim faint or collapse; the kidneys would shut down to keep as much blood as possible.
I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. Is 50:6. Willfully!!!!
Kill Him
But would rise
Application: In spite of the great suffering, opposition, and persecution that awaited Jesus in Jerusalem He led the way.
Transition: The Kingdom of God was to be initiated but not in the way the disciples had in mind.
II. The Misunderstanding of the Disciples Vs. 35-41
The Request
Grant them Honor – A promotion – Elevation over the others
Right hand = The place of greatest prominence
Left hand = The place of second greatest prominence
They misunderstood the nature of the Kingdom Jesus came to establish. He came to establish the Spiritual Kingdom… by redemptive work.
The Reply of Jesus
You do not know what you are asking
Drink the Cup
“Cup” OT symbolization of the wrath of God
Rouse yourself! Rouse yourself! Arise, O Jerusalem, You who have drunk from the Lord’s hand the cup of His anger Is. 51:17
The cup of wrath is referred to as a sword in the hand of God Jer. 25:16-18.
Baptism – not Christian Baptism
But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! Lk 12:50.
Metaphor for being immersed in calamity
Jesus is merely asking if they were WILLING to suffer and die as He would. No one could!
No one else could pay the price for the sins of the world. Why? He alone is worthy.
Who would be willing to volunteer their life enduring such torment at the hands of God and man?
The Reply of John & James
We are Able - unhesitant answer (they didn’t understand)
Jesus’ Affirmation (Be careful of what we ask)
James
John
This wasn’t Jesus’ to give, this belongs to the Father and for who He had prepared it for
The Disciples would be rewarded. The disciples reward would be 12 thrones residing over the 12 tribes of Israel. Matt. 19:28
The Ten became angry
Perhaps the others were angry because they wanted the position for themselves.
The attitude of the Disciples despite having the Christ as their teacher was self-serving, IT IS ABOUT ME! This is not the way of Jesus.
Self-service gets you no where in the Kingdom of God.
They had not yet learned the lesson that the cross must come before the crown, that suffering comes before glory.
Application: What is your attitude about servitude? Is it self service or in Christ’s service?
Transition: The greatest in the kingdom of God is the one who is selfless and willing to do those things no one else is willing to do.
III. The Master's Example Vs. 42-45
Jesus corrects the Disciples lovingly
Jesus teaches the necessity of humility and service for the Christian leader
They were in danger of becoming like the Gentile leaders, Lording their positions over others……
There is only room for One Lord and on earth He became poor so mankind could become rich.
They are to become servants of each other (Minister – Those who wait on tables)
Illustration: A good waitress at a restaurant/ Glass is always full /always smiles/ appears happy to be doing her job.
What would the Church look like if we served each other? It would be healthy and unified, because no one would be looking out for their own interest, everyone would be interested in the best interest of the other…… The church would thrive.
They are to become slaves of all
Illustration: Roots / koonta kintae or Tobias –
A slave is totally owned by another, possess no rights except those given by their master
They were to enter into a servant type of ministry of which Jesus is the best example of.
Jesus’ Service
The Son of Man did not come to be served by humanity even though it was created by Him and for Him, GLORY IS RIGHTFULY HIS, but to serve humanity.
Can you raise yourself over the Master?
His service: pay His life as a Ransom:
Idea of purchasing the freedom of a slave, because that what mankind is…. A slave to sin.
Hammer!
Greatness is turned upside down! Give you life to service!
Application: Jesus' example is that greatness in the Kingdom of God it is an attitude of servitude not self-glorification
.
The disciple of Jesus must find greatness in loss of self and in service of our Lord for the sake of mankind.
Even if in the face of persecution because the Master Himself remained a servant even during His time of suffering at the hands of those he came to serve.
What is your understanding of greatness?
Does everything in your life revolve around you! It should be a servant’s heart!
Illustration: Experiencing a great trial…. Tony (4) said “it’s not about you dad, it’s about Jesus.”
This is the attitude we must take on, it’s not about me it’s about Jesus and the ones He has sent us to reach for His glory.
Conclusion: The great misunderstanding in life, is that it’s not all about me.
