1 Sam. 1:27-28 “A Godly Mother”
Intro: I am reminded of a Mother’s Day card that was really cute. It was a great big card written in child’s printing. On the front was a picture of a little boy with his sneakers untied. He had a wagon, and toys were everywhere. He had a small cut on his face and there were smudges all over the card. On the outside It read, “Mom, I remember that prayer you used to say for me every day.” Inside, “God help you if you ever do that again.”
Eve – mother of all the living Ge. 3:20
I don’t believe there are devils enough in hell to pull a boy out of the arms of a godly mother. ~ Billy Sunday
A godly mother understands that motherhood is a privilege. Vs. 27B
The Bible teaches life, breath, and all things come from God (Acts 17). Every good gift comes from God, the birth of a baby is a Divine Action of God, there is nothing more precious that a child. Hannah understood this better than most. She lived in a day when polygamy was accepted, her husband’s other wife Peninnah had multiple children “all her sons and daughters” (vs.4), yet Hannah was barren. Imagine the hurt as she saw her rival “blessed” with children. In fact in Hannah’s day it was seen as a curse from to be barren, I imagine it was Hannah’s heart’s desire to have a child yet she was unable. Many godly women in the Bible were barren many years until God moved in His time. Sarah was 90 y.o.a., Elizabeth the mother of J.T.B. was past child bearing days when she had John, these factors press the fact that motherhood is a gift from God.
Listen to Hannah’s description of the birth of Samuel, Given (nā·ṯǎn) – To be handed down, Petition () – Asked (shaw-al´) - Her desire.
Ill. "Every mother has the breath-taking privilege of sharing with God in the creation of new life." And when God places a child or children in your arms, His will for you is to bring them up in a home where they will know God & His word, & Jesus Christ as their Savior & Lord.
It is a sad fact, that many today no longer view motherhood as a privilege, nor life being a gift from God. The mother’s womb used to be the safest place for a baby, but now its become a dangerous place and the leaders of our country are trying to make it more dangerous.
But, Hannah was a godly mother and viewed motherhood as a great privilege from God, a great testimony of this is name of her son, “Samuel” = asked of the Lord.
Application: Do you view motherhood as a privilege or as a burden? Being a mother is not about what you give up to have a child, but what you gain from having one.
A godly mother is a praying mother. Vs. 27A
Hannah was a woman of prayer. She knew where to turn to she knew who to turn to, notice she prayed to the Lord of Host (vs 11). Notice when she began to pray for her child, before he was conceived. Notice how she prayed, poured out her soul (vs. 15). Hannah believed in the power of prayer, she was a woman full of faith and petitioned the Lord. Hannah was a godly mother and came to visit Samuel as she made annual sacrifices (2:19), she would bring him a new robe every year and I believe Samuel was constantly on her mind and thus constantly in her prayers.
The impression that a praying mother leaves upon her children is life-long. Perhaps when you are dead and gone your prayer will be answered. ~~ D.L. Moody
Application: Pray that your Child will be what the Lord has them to be instead of what the world has them to be.
A godly mother is a wise mother. Vs. 28A
A wise mother understands who her child ultimately belongs to, the Lord… then gives her child over to the Lord. When did she dedicate her child to the Lord? Before he was even conceived, Nazerite vow (vs. 11). (Samson, Samuel, John the Baptist) Can there be greater wisdom than to dedicate your child to the One who gave him to you, the Lord of creation, is there greater wisdom on earth than to give your child to the redeemer of mankind, the Lord.
Lent x 2 (Dedicated NASB) (Given AMP) This is an outward expression of your personal faith, Do you trust the Lord with your Child?
DO you know the definition of wisdom? Knowledge put into practice. Hannah applied what she believed and gave her first born son to God.
Application: Have you given your child over to the Lord?
A godly mother is a successful mother. Vs. 28B
Those first four years of Samuel’s life were crucial, Samuel’s greatest influence was his mother. Eli wasn’t much of a priest, perhaps the only thing of great significance Eli taught Samuel was to say “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” what he was taught by Hannah reflected his actions “he (they) worshiped the Lord.”
I imagine what that godly mother took the Shema to heart… taught her son was the essential desire of the heart of God, to Love God with everything. To love others as themselves.
“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.” (2 Timothy 1:5)
Samuel became: Judge and Prophet, he anointed the first two kings of Israel. Full of wisdom and faith.
Conclusion/Application:
