Title: Praising the Name of the Lord
Text: Psalm 148
Intro: I recall the story of the elderly Christian man, a fine singer, who learned that he had cancer of the tongue and that surgery was required. In the hospital after everything was ready for the operation, the man said to the doctor, "Are you sure I will never sing again?" The surgeon found it difficult to answer his question. He simply shook his head no. The patient then asked if he could sit up for a moment. "I've had many good times singing the praises of God," he said. "And now you tell me I can never sing again. I have one song that will be my last. It will be of gratitude and praise to God." There in the doctor's presence the man sang softly the words of Isaac Watts' hymn,
I'll praise my Maker while I've Breath, And when my voice is lost in death, Praise shall employ my nobler power; days of praise shall ne'er be past, While life, and thought, and being last, Or immortality endures.
This Psalm shows commands us to praise the LORD and shows us how the world should look, broken yet hopeful because we have a great redeemer. Now picture this psalm in your minds and in your hearts. A choir loft like you have never seen encompassing all of the universe, endless rows of chairs filled with all creation! Those animate and inanimate. Singing praises to the Lord because His name is worthy of all praise, honor, and glory.
This is a scene as to what all creation should look like!
CPS: The Lord is worthy of praise and all creation owes praise to Him, PRAISE is DUE TO THE LORD ALONE!
The Heavens and all things in them should Praise the Name of the Lord because He alone is worthy. 1-6
His Name.
Eleven times in these 14 short verses we are commanded to Praise the Lord by the author! Who is the author? If you believe the Truth that God’s written Word is all Inspired, infallible, and inerrant then the command is coming from God!
Praise -to extol the deity of God and His work as an act of worship. (CELEBRATE Him!)
God is so wonderful, He doesn’t merely command us but gives us reasons as to why we are to praise His Name!
What is His name? Yahweh. The Devine name of God found over 6,000 times in the OT. Such a revered name that ancients rarely spoke it for the thought that it was holy to pronounce at all. It’s the name God gave Moses at his request. “I am who I am,” “I will be who I will be,” or even “I cause to be what is.” Yahweh is more than a name, its an Idea, its affirmation that God is always subject, always free to be and act as God wills.
It states His self-existence state, that there was never a moment outside of time that He did not exist. He exists due to His existence. It tells us that He is the present-tense presence, Who acts always in the present (He is not subject to time or any other limitations) regardless if we can understand this or not.
It’s the Idea of God IS! “I am the one who is” or “I am Being” this thought alone is enough to send one high in the sky with shouts of Halleluiah!
His Heavenly Creation
Who? What? From the Heavens. All things in the Heavens. Upward – The Heights
When I picture the scenes of heaven I picture continual praise for His glory.
All Angels…(His messengers) the most holy night Christmas. Luke 2:13-14a
All His Host (Army)… Unstoppable undefeatable Army that praises His name.
Sun and Moon
All stars of light (Planets, Suns, Everything) 100 Billion Trillion. Often worshiped by people because they a seen and majestic but even they are subject to the one true Lord. Yahweh.
Sky and clouds
Ps. 19:1 Heavens declare the Glory of the Lord.
HE CREATED!
Ps. 8:1 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
Ill: Airplane flying just over the clouds/ Stars in the dark Malawi night
He commanded and they were created from nothingness, He set them in place and set boundaries for them where they will not move from. He created them and then held them in place by the power of His word. (sustains all creation even things in the heavens! Without the Lord there would be total chaos in the creation)
God is Spirit, He doesn’t have human features, hands or feet but if He did we would say He is holding everything in the Palm of His hand. Perhaps we would sing
Ill. He has the whole world in His hands
He upholds all things by the power of His word, Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord. The Bible commands these inanimate creations to praise Him.
The Earth and all things in them should Praise the Name of the Lord because He alone is worthy. 7- 14
His Earthly Creation
Dragons and all deeps (swarming life of the ocean)
Dragon – Leviathan – Sea Monster – the most frightening beasts is subject to the LORD and is commanded even praises the name of the Lord. To summon the sea monsters to praise God is to proclaim Yahweh’s power over absolutely everything
Elements, seasons, weather are quick to obey Him (Praise Him as Devine) Jesus calmed the storms even the winds obey Him
Mountains, hills, trees that bear fruit and trees that bear lumber
Wild beast, domesticated animals, creeping things, and birds of the air
God’s most special creation is singing praises to Him. This is all mankind, All the people from the highest in rank to little children, all social class, races and ages.
His Name Alone
This emphasizes that everything Yahweh created should praise Him as powerful and superior to all, because He is. it is a name above every name!
His Horn for all people
Horn – Strength – Who is this Horn – God Himself - Jesus
