Text: Matthew 28:16-20
Title: The Great Commission
Intro: The types of people we see, YET THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF PEOPLE IN THUS WORLD
Sinners, saints
Wicked, righteous
Reprobates, heirs
Enemies, friends of God
Foolish, wise
Tares, wheat
Ungodly, godly
Children of the world, children of the kingdom
Those who live after the flesh, those who are led by the Spirit
What separates the two? A relationship with Jesus.
The Bible says that God desires for none to perish but many will.
The Lord of mercy has a plan that was established before the foundations of the world to set man right with God.
Orientate Scripture: The eleven remaining disciples traveled to Galilee at Jesus’ command, climbed mount Tabor to worship the risen Lord in spite of some remaining unbelief.
There Jesus gave them the great commission or instruction to advance His Kingdom on earth.
CPS: We are not left desperately alone in our task commanded by the Lord Jesus, He gives us a fact, a command, and a promise that by His grace and the sweat from our brow the world can be reached for His glory.
The Fact (Vs.18)
While beginning His earthly ministry Jesus is set apart by His father for the purpose of His ministry, that is redemptive work.
Earthly Ministry
Announced (John B)
Anointed (Baptism)
Approved (wilderness)
Lust of the flesh
Lust of the eyes
The pride of life (1 John 2:16)
Son of humility
Son of power
Heavenly Ministry
These eleven men have seen the authority of Jesus over life as He gave life to whom He desired. His power over death as He arose from the tomb, now this power (ĕxŏusia) is set forth in ministry.
Exousia – Right to use power
NB) He delegates this authority to His apostles
Ill. The power of Jesus is not just some magical force as you see in the movies and equal to it is an evil force….. Revenge of the Sith…. Darth Sidous vs. Yota
Total
Universal
Col. 1:16-17
Hundred Billion Galaxies
App: This power is unyielding and will set forth what Jesus desires to be accomplished
The Command (vs. 19-20a)
Go
All nations
Different from his 1st sending out Matt. 10:6
As you are going
Shema – Deut 6:4
TELL WHAT JESUS HAS DONE!
Teach
Make disciples
Define disciples – Pupil
Teach others to totally depend upon Jesus in all aspects of life
Ill. Billy Graham – crusade not how to accomplish the Great Commission
2 Timothy 2:2
There is an old Chinese proverb that says, you take a man a fish, he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish he will eat for a life time.
Do you know What’s wrong with the Church?
Leave people hanging
Baptized
Welcomed into community - taught – preaching – loved on
Send them out to do the same
The promise (v. 20b)
Jesus gives us a promise and we know from the sacred Scriptures that Jesus is God in the Flesh and we know that God keeps his promises. Jesus does not lie (Titus 1), exaggerate, nor Falsely propagate. A promise from God is as having the title deed in your hand. He will keep it!
His Presence
Ill. Marian Trench 6.83 miles beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean
Outer banks of space
Held accountable
2 Cor. 5:10
Comforted
10 apostles maryterd
1 Natural causes – yet not unscathed
Yes, as you go and make disciples you will face hardship but the presence of Christ is your partner hence the term “great co-mmission.”
He will never leave you nor forsake you and you will find peace in the process because One who is greater than a friend is with you and He will be with the believer until the end of the age.
His Empowerment
Conduit
Ambassador
Ill. 8810 promises in Bible – 7706 OT – 1104 NT – He has kept them all
“We’re sitting on the promises of God when we ought to be standing on the promises of God!”
Application: God’s promise by grace through faith man can be delivered from the wrath of God
Its been 2000 years and the Great commission has not been accomplished
Aer you one of the 95%?
Conclusion: Fact/Command/Promise
Christian, what is your excuse?
Whatever it is, it’s not valid.
There are two types of people in this word, yet the Lord desires for there to be only one.
