Synopsis
An attitude of simple trust and faith, to be distinguished from childishness. It is commended by Scripture as an appropriate attitude for the believer to take towards God.
God treats his people like children
Ps 103:13
Psalm 103:13 (NASB95) — 13 Just as a father has compassion on his children, So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.

Numbers 11:12 (NASB95) — 12 “Was it I who conceived all this people? Was it I who brought them forth, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which You swore to their fathers’?
Isaiah 49:15 (NASB95) — 15 “Can a woman forget her nursing child And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.
Isaiah 66:13 (NASB95) — 13 “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; And you will be comforted in Jerusalem.”
Jeremiah 31:20 (NASB95) — 20 “Is Ephraim My dear son? Is he a delightful child? Indeed, as often as I have spoken against him, I certainly still remember him; Therefore My heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him,” declares the Lord.
Hosea 11:1–4 (NASB95) — 1 When Israel was a youth I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son. 2 The more they called them, The more they went from them; They kept sacrificing to the Baals And burning incense to idols. 3 Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in My arms; But they did not know that I healed them. 4 I led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love, And I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws; And I bent down and fed them.
Romans 8:14–17 (NASB95) — 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
Galatians 4:1–7 (NASB95) — 1 Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father. 3 So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. 4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
God’s people should respond to God as children to a parent
In trust
Ps 131:2
Psalm 131:2 (NASB95) — 2 Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me.
In obedience
1 Pe 1:14
1 Peter 1:14 (NASB95) — 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance,
In humility
Lk 9:46–48
Luke 9:46–48 (NASB95) — 46 An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”
See also 1 Ki 3:7 Solomon
1 Kings 3:7 (NASB95) — 7 “Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.
In innocence
Mk 10:13–15
Mark 10:13–15 (NASB95) — 13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”
See also Lk 10:21
Luke 10:21 (NASB95) — 21 At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
In imitating a model
Eph 5:1–2
Ephesians 5:1–2 (NASB95) — 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
See also 1 Jn 3:10
1 John 3:10 (NASB95) — 10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.
Childlikeness is reflected in pastoral care
1 Th 2:7
1 Thessalonians 2:7 (NASB95) — 7 But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children.
See also 1 Jn 2:28
1 John 2:28 (NASB95) — 28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.
Childlikeness is to be distinguished from immature childishness
1 Co 3:1–3
1 Corinthians 3:1–3 (NASB95) — 1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, 3 for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?
See also Heb 5:12–6:1
Hebrews 5:12–6:1 (NASB95) — 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. 1 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Acceptance, human
Synopsis
The response of human beings to the revelation and grace of God. It is seen in receiving Jesus Christ, his words and the message of the gospel, and in the acceptance of one another for his sake. Believers are called, too, to accept instruction and discipline and to submit to God’s will for their lives.
Human beings are to accept Jesus Christ
Receiving Jesus Christ
Jn 1:12
John 1:12 (NASB95) — 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

Accepting Jesus Christ’s words

Matthew 11:14 (NASB95) — 14 “And if you are willing to accept it, John himself is Elijah who was to come.
Matthew 19:11–12 (NASB95) — 11 But He said to them, “Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 “For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”
John 3:33–34 (NASB95) — 33 “He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.

John 6:60 (NASB95) — 60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?”
Acceptance of the gospel
The gospel is worthy of acceptance
1 Ti 1:15; Jas 1:21
1 Timothy 1:15 (NASB95) — 15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.
James 1:21 (NASB95) — 21 Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
See also Mt 13:23; 1 Co 15:3; 1 Ti 4:9–10
Matthew 13:23 (NASB95) — 23 “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”
1 Corinthians 15:3 (NASB95) — 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
1 Timothy 4:9–10 (NASB95) — 9 It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. 10 For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.
Examples of those accepting the gospel
Ac 2:41 3,000 on the day of Pentecost; Ac 8:14 the Samaritans; Ac 11:1 the Gentiles
Acts 2:41 (NASB95) — 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
Acts 8:14 (NASB95) — 14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,

2 Corinthians 11:4 (NASB95) — 4 For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.
Ga 1:9 believers in Galatia
Galatians 1:9 (NASB95) — 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
Believers in Thessalonica:

Rejection of the gospel
Ac 22:18; Ro 11:15; 1 Co 2:14
Acts 22:18 (NASB95) — 18 and I saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste, and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about Me.’
Romans 11:15 (NASB95) — 15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
1 Corinthians 2:14 (NASB95) — 14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
Acceptance of one another
A right self-acceptance
1 Co 15:10 Paul accepts himself as a sinner saved by God’s grace and entrusted with an important ministry; Ga 5:14 Loving others requires a proper self-love: the recognition that people are made in God’s image and are the objects of his love.
1 Corinthians 15:10 (NASB95) — 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.

Romans 13:9 (NASB95) — 9 For this, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
1 Timothy 1:12–14 (NASB95) — 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus.
James 2:8 (NASB95) — 8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.

Philippians 2:29–30 (NASB95) — 29 Receive him then in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; 30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me.
