1 John 3:1-10“The Winning Team”
I enjoy college football, the excitement of the season and the hopefulness in winning a national championship. However there are 130 NCAA Division 1 football teams but only one team can win it all. But on game-day Saturday there are only two teams. One team will win and the other will lose.
So is life, the team of victory and the team of defeat. This has been predestined before the foundation of the world, though the devil deceived man he will not and cannot defeat God. In fact at Calvary’s Cross the devils fate was sealed on earth and now we just wait for Christ to return to do away with him forever along with all of demons and children.
Which team do you belong to? We have seen a series of test to prove “fellowship” now we begin to see a series of test to prove sonship.
CPS: The Child of God does not continually practice sin but the child of the devil continues in a habitual practice of sin.
The Child of God will not live in the continual practice of sin because his sin has been taken way 4-7
Ex: The one born of God does not practice sin but practices righteousness.
Sin Defined
Sin: (10X) Failure to conform to the moral Law of God in act, attitude, or nature. The Bible. “Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” (Rm 14:23) “The thought of foolishness is sin.” (Prov. 24:9) “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (Jm 4:17) “All unrighteousness is sin.” (1 Jn 5:17) 1 John sin is defined as lawlessness. Defilement (1:9-2:2) but here it is viewed as defiance.
Ill: Remember little Judy in the front sit of her dad’s car… “I’m still standing up on the inside.” Not His way but “MY WAY” F. Sinatra
Practice: (5x) to make; to do… To continually live in sin without conscience.
Sin Removed (he appeared for this purpose)
John 1:29 (2) 1 Peter 1:18-20 (3) 1 John 2:2 “propitiation” "turning away" the wrath of sin.
Take Away = αἴρω to expiate sin "The process by which sins are nullified or covered" Expiation Expiation is to "cleanse, purge, forgive, attone
App: Sinless perfection on earth? No! Sin is not your pattern or practice in fact sin makes the Son of God sick because of his conscience. To sin is to lay burden on the Christ on the Cross. “Here you go Lord while you are up there go ahead and bear the burden of this one for me too.
Trans: “Don’t be deceived” The false teachers taught you could be a Son of God and still practice sin!
The child of the devil lives in the continual practice of sin and he will be destroyed just as his father has been. 8-10
Exp: The unrepentant sinner lives in lawlessness, his own wicked desires are his god and he belongs to the devil and his fate will be the same.
The Devil’s origin
Contrast Jesus (no sin) devil (sin from the beginning)… The moment he was created? No, Is. 14:9-17
Works = deed’s and labor…. Devil “accuser” his chief activity is to oppose Christ and God’s people. He wanted to be God and convinced man he could be like God and all the Earth fell and sin rules this realm, “Prince of the Power of the air” “The ruler of this world” But he is not eternal
Ill: Bow hunting… the deer runs and runs before falling dead! At the Cross the devil was mortally wounded and he runs for a little while longer.
The Devil’s Destruction
Destruction: λύω to dissolve, melt, put off…. does not mean “annihilate.” Satan is certainly still at work today! Destroy, here, means “to render inoperative, to rob of power.” But the day fast approaches as though it has already happened and the Lord of Lord and King of Kings will completely annihilate the serpent of old by the breath of His word.
The one who does not do righteousness but the pattern and practice of his life is sin will be destroyed along with his father the devil.
Con: Which one are you. If you are saved then the fruit of your heart is Christ’s righteousness. If you are not saved then sin has no effect on your conscious and you continue in it up to the day of your destruction.
