I. Jesus’ Question vs. 13-14

A. Jesus takes His disciples to Cesarea Philippi. This would be like going to the seedy side of Las Vegas. (Paint the picture of the idols, Pan, the gates of hell [human sacrifice])
B. The rumors were swirling as to who Jesus was. The same thing is still going on today.

II. Jesus’ Identity vs. 15-16

A. Then Jesus asks the disciples the question, this is the question that we all must ask ourselves.
B. Peter’s response is the correct one, the only correct one.
C. We must find our identity in who Jesus is.

III. Jesus’ Promise vs. 17-19

A. Only God can reveal Himself to us. John 6:44
John 6:44 NASB95
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
B. The gates of Hades will not prevail against it. No matter how dark the world gets, the church will continue, until Jesus returns.
C. The binding and loosing passage is talking about declaring if someone is dead in their sins or not. Matt. 18:15-20
Matthew 18:15–20 NASB95
“If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
