Partakers of a Quality of God’s Nature, 2 Peter 1:2-4
Partakers of a Quality of God’s Nature, 2 Peter 1:2-4
2 Peter 1:2–4 (NKJV)
I wish grace and peace are multiplied to you in the full experiential knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine inherent ability has given to us all things pertain to life and godliness, through the full experiential knowledge of Him who called us through a proper opinion and virtue, through the exceedingly great and precious promises have been given to us, in order that through these you should become partakers of a quality of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world through lust.
Life (ζωή) - A Quality of Eternal Life
Comes from a Belief in the Son of God, John 3:36
John 3:36 (NKJV)
He who believes in the Son has eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
Righteousness reigns in life, Romans 5:17
Romans 5:17
For since in the trespass of the one [man] the death reigned through the one [man], by how much more the ones receiving the abundance of the grace and the gift of righteousness in life will reign through the one Jesus Christ.
Involves a newness of life, Romans 6:4
Romans 6:4
Therefore, we have been buried with Him through the immersion into the death, in order that just as Christ was raised out from the dead through the proper opinion of the Father, thus also we in newness of life should walk.
Produces fruit in our lives, Romans 6:22
Romans 6:22
But now you have been freed from the sin [nature], indeed being enslaved to God. Having your fruit unto sanctification, and the end [is] eternal life
We receive it by Grace, Romans 6:23
Romans 6:23
For the wages of the sin [nature] are death, but the gracious gift from God [is] eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord
Involves our frame of mind, Romans 8:6
Romans 8:6
For the mind set on the flesh [is] death, but the mind set on the Spirit [is] life and peace.
Has an aroma, 2 Corinthians 2:16
2 Corinthians 2:16
To whom on the one hand the aroma of death out from death, and on the other hand the aroma out from life because of life ...
Our actions produce a manifestation of life, Galatians 6:8
For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
A life in Christ, Colossians 3:3
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Promised to us, 2 Timothy 1:1
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
Fighting the proper fight, laying hold of eternal life, 1 Timothy 6:12
1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV)
Fight the proper fight of the faith, taking hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
More valuable than wealth, 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
He who has the Son has life, 1 John 5:12
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.
This is God’s quality of life, not the same as everlasting life
Godliness
God’s life in activity, 1 Timothy 3:16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory.
Exercising ourselves to godliness not old wives’ tales, 1 Timothy 4:7
But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness.
Profane - unhallowed, common. Such as Esau concerning his birth right Hebrews 12:16. Also seen in babblings 1 Timothy 6:20
Profitable in all things, 1 Timothy 4:8
For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
Involves healthy teaching, 1 Timothy 6:3
1 Timothy 6:3 (NKJV)
If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the teaching which accords with godliness,
False teaches suppose gain is godliness, 1 Timothy 6:5
useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.
Godliness involves contentment, 1 Timothy 6:6
Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
We are to pursue godliness, 1 Timothy 6:11
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
This world will pass away, therefore what manner of person should we be? 2 Peter 3:11
Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,
Given All Things Pertaining to Life and Godliness
Applying Life and Godliness in our Lives, 2 Peter 1:5-9
Applying Life and Godliness in our Lives, 2 Peter 1:5-9
Using diligence, 2 Peter 1:5
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
In using our Spiritual gift, Romans 12:8-11
he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;
Maturing, Hebrews 6:10-12
For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Adding to virtue to our faith, 2 Peter 1:5
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
Where our mind should be focused, Philippians 4:8
Philippians 4:8 (NKJV)
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—reason on these things (λογίζεσθε).
As a chosen race, we are to proclaim the virtue of God, Who called us out of darkness, 1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
We are given all things pertaining to life and godliness through the full experiential knowledge Him, who called us by a proper opinion and virtue, 2 Peter 1:3
2 Peter 1:3
as His divine inherent ability has given to us all things pertain to life and godliness, through the full experiential knowledge of Him who called us through a proper opinion and virtue
Virtue is a behavior and attitude that show a high moral standard.
Our virtue comes from who we are in Christ
Our virtue is living out the promises God gave us
Adding knowledge to our virtue, 2 Peter 1:5
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge,
We, being full of goodness are to be filled with all knowledge, Romans 15:14
Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
Knowledge alone can puff up, 1 Corinthians 8:1
Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
Sharing the knowledge of God, 2 Corinthians 4:6
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Casting down strongholds that raise themselves up against the knowledge of God, 2 Corinthians 10:5
casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
Knowing the love of Christ, Ephesians 3:16-19
that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
All other things compared to the knowledge of Christ, Philippians 3:8
Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ
We are to grow in grace and knowledge, 2 Peter 3:18
but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
