14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
17 “For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,
18 and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.”
19 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah:
20 “Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time,
21 then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers.
22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.”

B. Reading of the text
13 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem,
14 but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.”
16 So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen.
17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
18 And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
19 And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance.
20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
23 Of this man’s offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.
24 Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’
C. Review of the text
Spirit empowered church that is motivated by God’s truth above all else
Last week—motivated by Truth
D. Relevance of the text
As we enter into Part 1 of the Paul’s sermon my hope is that we are able to gain knowledge of the faithfulness of our God in heaven is to us. Understanding the depth of his love for you and I when he planned before the foundation of the world to love on us well by giving his son for us.
I. Visit to the Synagogue
I. Visit to the Synagogue
Leave Cyprus to go to Perga in Pamphylia which is what we know today as Turkey. Leaving Perga they went to Antioch in Pisidia which Luke makes it sound as though it is no big deal at all. But truth be told Antioch is some 100 miles to the north across a Mountain range.
Acts ((1) The Setting (13:13–16a))
The route was barren, often flooded by swollen mountain streams, and notorious for its bandits, which even the Romans had difficulty bringing under control. Antioch itself was in the highlands, some 3,600 feet above sea level. It was one of the sixteen cities named Antioch that had been established around 300 B.C. by Seleucus Nikator in honor of his father Antiochus
I just wanted you to picture in your head the length to which Paul would go to follow the Lord’s leading in his life. Ultimately, they would lose John Mark back to Jerusalem for what reason we are not sure of but remember that because it will come up again in Chapter 15.
Paul and Barnabas go into the synagogue just like we said last week would become Paul’s Pattern for ministry. Understand the synagogue is the center of the Jewish community. Paul and Barnabas would be able to find a people who were hearing the word of God, what we know as the OT and needed help in understanding the truth about the Messiah. They listen to the word read and then are asked to share something with the group.
T.S. The requests leads to Paul speaking up to the group their that day
II. God Chooses Israel
II. God Chooses Israel
And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
vs. 17 God Sovereign Decision
17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
God Chose them, He Made the people, He led them out
God’s choice—not some mighty nation that God picked the strongest and the wisest from that qualified to be his.
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
6 Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.
7 I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power,
The Lord established his people in Egypt to build his nation at the hand of the Egyptians while they are in slavery to him. Ultimately so he could lead them out of Egypt.
11 But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?
11 and brought Israel out from among them, for his steadfast love endures forever;
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever;
Salvation is from the Lord our God. It is a work done by his hand and by HIS power alone..
vs. 18 God’s Long Suffering
18 And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
The word translate put up with—is to put up with someone or something, implying extensive patience—To bear with
God---Put up with Israel..
6 For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
10 For forty years I loathed that generation and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.”
10 But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.
vs. 19 God’s Provisions
19 And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance.
God gave them their land.
1 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and mightier than you,
Because he is faithful not because God’s people showed faithfulness.
vs. 20 Check’s for God’s people---judges
20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
450 years in Egypt, wilderness, and the initial time of Conquest in the Land of Canaan took 450 years.
Then came the time of the Judges leading to the last of the judges and the prophet Samuel.
God’s plan, God’s timing…It was all a work of God
Your faith has been established by the creator of the heaven and the Earth.
III. People desire a King
III. People desire a King
The people of God ask for a King
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah
5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord.
7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.
God gives them Saul a man that looked the part of a King to be their first King. But he would not make it long for the Lord RAISED UP DAVID!
14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
It was God’s design that David be King and God would fulfill his promises with the line of David.
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,
15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.
16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”
T.S. God’s sovereign plan was to gather a people unto himself for his own good pleasure and fulfill his promises..
IV. Promises of God
IV. Promises of God
11 The Lord swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: “One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne.
5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
Jesus is that promise!!
Angel speaking with Joseph in Matthew 1...
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,
9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!
John the Baptist was spoken about in the OT as the one that would call on the people to repent for the messiah Christ the King is coming to save his people at just the right time.
1 “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.
