Do you want to have a great marriage?
Do you want to have a great church?
Ephesians 5:17–33 KJV 1900
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
The mystery is great but I’m speaking with reference to Christ and the church.
What is that telling you?
Marriage is very, very sacred—very sacred.
What is a mystery? New revelation, something in the past hidden, and now revealed.
The mystery is this; this has never been said before in holy Scripture, never in the Old Testament that marriage is to follow the pattern of Christ’s relationship to the church.
Marriage is sacred. The church is one with Christ, that’s the mystery. The church is one with Christ, and that’s the picture of marriage. It is sacred by virtue of its association with the relationship between Christ and His church.
In order to be successful in marriage and in the church, we must

Search for the Will of God

Ephesians 5:15–17 KJV 1900
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Requires Diligence

Ephesians 5:15 KJV 1900
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
The command is for us to “give attention to the way we walk in this world”, so that we “walk accurately and precisely.”

Requires Discernment

Ephesians 5:16 KJV 1900
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Redeeming -
means “to buy up; to deliver from loss.” It was used in that culture of “purchasing a slave in order to set the slave free.”

Requires Direction

Ephesians 5:17 KJV 1900
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
unwise means “stupid or ignorant.”
It refers to a person who “thinks himself wise when actually he knows nothing.”
How do we know the will of God?
We have to understand the principles taught in the Scriptures.
We have to slow down long enough
to read the Word of God.
to meditate on the Word of God.
to understand the Word of God.

Submit to the Authority of the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18–24 KJV 1900

Sanction Control

Sanction means give authority, to confirm.
Ephesians 5:18 KJV 1900
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
The Spirits will should be your will.
The Spirits thought should be your thoughts.
The Spirits desire should be your desire.

The Spirit is for Guidance.

John 16:13 KJV 1900
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Spirit is for Protection.

1 Timothy 4:1 KJV 1900
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

Show Celebration

Ephesians 5:19 KJV 1900
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
When we understand the authority of the Husband and authority of the Spirit for guidance and protection.
Everybody Submit to Everybody.
Wives Submit to each Other.

Secure Contentment

Ephesians 5:20 KJV 1900
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Show the Love of Jesus Christ

Ephesians 5:25–33 KJV 1900
Love Starts with those of Authority
Husbands Love Your Wife

True Love Sacrifices

Ephesians 5:25 KJV 1900
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

True Love Sanctifies

Ephesians 5:26–27 KJV 1900
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

True Love is Sustains

Ephesians 5:28–29 KJV 1900
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

Striving to Keep the Union of the Body

Ephesians 5:30–33 KJV 1900
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
Ephesians 4:1–7 KJV 1900
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
In Marriage, will you put your union first.
In Church, will you put our union first.
Only as we all Search for the will of God, Submit tot he Authority of the Holy Spirit, Show the Love of Christ while always Striving to Keep the Union of Unity will we be successful in marriages and the church as a witness of what we have received in Jesus Christ.
