7 and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,
22 “There is no peace,” says the Lord, “for the wicked.”
20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, When it cannot rest, Whose waters cast up mire and dirt.
21 “There is no peace,” Says my God, “for the wicked.”
Troubled = Disturbed, agitated, to worry, cause pain, to be distressed, a condition of being out of order, needing repair.
One writer said, “Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble.”
Gen 1 - Man was made in the image of God
But a disturbing factor came into the garden and
Man lost his innocence
And since the fall of man, sin has troubled the human race.
Like the ocean (Troubled waters)
The human race is troubled...
Casting up filth and mir
It reached a crescendo in the anti-deluvian age when God said, “I will destroy man whom I have created.”
Noah
God started over again with a righteous family - Noah and his sons and thier wives.
God said, “Be fruitful and multiply”
It wasn’t long until Noah was drunk and his son committed lewdness, and God was placing a curse upon Ham’s seed.
Babel
By Gen 11 - The whole world is looking to themselves and to a man instead of looking to God!
That same spirit is working now....(1 John 2:18)
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Sin
Sin
Sin starts with an “S” like a serpent
Sin starts with an “S” like a serpent
The sound is like a hiss..
and the last to letters are “in”.
When you let the devil take over...
Everything is “in”...
There is really nothing wrong anymore!
Sin is a Disturbing, Troubling Factor
Sin is a Disturbing, Troubling Factor
It caused Adam & Eve to hide from God!
It caused Cain to go out from the presence of God
It caused Joseph’s brothers to fear and tremble
It caused Saul to become filled with Hatred and violence
It caused Belteeshazar’s knees to knock as he trembled with fear.
It caused Judas to go out and hang himself
It is the root of every family argument
It is the root of every divorce
It is the cause of every war
It has driven good men to drink
to drown out the guilt and the constant struggle within.
Guilt
Guilt
That sense of responsibility for sin..
That heavy cloud that hangs over every sinner
… every backslider
Weighs heavy upon the heart:
Man can try to suppress it, and say it’s not there
But it’s still there!
Man can busy himself in jobs, work, and activity and think it will go away....
But it’s still there!
Even Religion - cannot drive it away
Joining a church...
Becoming an active member...
In the OT men would bring their sacrifice...
Another lamb
Another turtle dove
Another bullock
The stink of burning flesh was on the alter.
The propensity to sin was always there
Troubling man..
“For what the law could not do” (Rom)
Religion is not enough:
10 “Arise and depart, For this is not your rest; Because it is defiled, it shall destroy, Yes, with utter destruction.
Religiosity is not enough.
The devil is religious!
He believes in one God and trembles
The pharasees and saducees were religious...
but suffered the condemnation of Jesus!
Now if I closed right here and stopped preaching it would be a tragedy!
I’ve got to give you the “rest” of the story!

10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.”
9 “Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts?
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.”
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people,
12 To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,” And, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear.
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Rest = Refreshment, revitalization, peace, calm, tranquility, serenity, composure, peacefulness.
Webster calls Rest - relief
Relief from the guilt of past sins
But also deliverance from the practice of sin
“he who the Son has set free is free indeed”
Refreshing = Something invigorating, exhilerating, pleasing, delightful, heartwarming, gratifying, exciting and stimulating.
Rest and Comfort go together
Rest and Comfort go together
“Let not your heart be troubled”
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 4 - (Living Water - Springing up)
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
Luke 24:44 (NKJV)
44 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
Luke 24:45–47 (NKJV)
45 And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.
