1. Previous Study’s Review
In Chp.7:1: now concerning the things of which you wrote to me… so the church in Corinth had several questions for Paul…
1. Romantic Relationships: chp.7: Marriage, divorce, remarriage & being single.
2. Christian Liberty: chp.8-10 , our Christian Liberty.
3. Worship Services: chp.11: , talking about the divine order for men & women…
4. Communion Services: chp.11:
5. Manifestations of the Holy Spirit: chp.12-13-14. We looked at a great many things about Spiritual Gifts…
But Paul summed it all by telling us to let all things be done but decently & in order…
2. Current Study’s Overview
2. Current Study’s Overview
Now we come the 6th question from the Corinthians about the: Resurrection of the Dead:
This is an exciting topic to be sure. Read...
There are 7 things that involves the Resurrection of the Dead, but today we are only going to look at 2 things:
If you are taking notes we are going to look at 2 things that involves The Resurrection of the Dead:
The Message of the Gospel Vs. 1-4
The Message of the Witnesses Vs. 5-11
1. The Message of the Gospel Vs. 1-4
1. The Message of the Gospel Vs. 1-4
In dealing with the Resurrection of the Dead… Paul talks about the Gospel of Jesus Christ…
Because the validity of the Gospel… hinges on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ… Paul said in vs.14 If Christ is not risen then our Preaching is in vain…
Now, regarding the message of the Gospel there are 4 things to note:
1.1 Involves Our Decision Vs. 1a
1.1 Involves Our Decision Vs. 1a
The fist important thing about the Gospel is receiving it, accepting it, this speaks of choice.
We’re called free moral agents, so we all have to make a personal decision to Receive the Gospel…
Which by the way is something God desires for all of us,
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;
1.2 Involves Our Position Vs. 1b
1.2 Involves Our Position Vs. 1b
This speaks of our Position in Christ - The only way we can stand before a Holy God is by receiving the Gospel of God, by His Grace,
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
we’ve been justified (made righteous) by the Gospel so we can stand before God.
The Gospel is so important because it’s through it that Jesus Christ credits our account with His righteousness so we can stand or have a right standing before God…
1.3 Involves Our Salvation Vs. 2
1.3 Involves Our Salvation Vs. 2
Salvation is not based on who we are or what we do… it’s the Gospel that saves us…
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
Now, notice towards the beginning of vs.2 again. It says “if”.
It would seem that holding fast to the Gospel… is simply continuing to believe in the Gospel…
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.
3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.
APPLICATION: Talk about what are some things in life that may cause us to stop believing in the Lord.
1.4 Involves The Scriptures Vs. 3-4
1.4 Involves The Scriptures Vs. 3-4
His Death Vs. 3-4a - Psl.22:15-16, Isa.53:5, 12: Dan.9:26, Zech.12:10, are scriptures that talk about the Messiah’s Death…
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. 16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet;
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
10 “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.
The Messiah died for our sins… because we’re all born into sin,
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
When Jesus died, He took our sins upon Himself,
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
That points to & speaks of His shedding of Blood and in...
22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,
10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
His Resurrection Vs. 4b - Again, just like his death & burial was prophesied so too His resurrection.
10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.
15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, For He shall receive me. Selah
Ok, so how important is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ… it’s eternally important, read vs.17…
17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!
In Rom.4:25 Jesus was delivered up for our offenses & was raised for our justification…
And His Death & Resurrection all point to & speak of His Love…
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
2. The Message of the Witnesses Vs. 5-11
2. The Message of the Witnesses Vs. 5-11
Now, it’s important to note that it is documented that over 500 people at different times reported they saw Jesus Christ resurrected physically.
They were eye witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The first person that Paul lists is the Apostle Peter...
2.1 Cephas Vs. 5a
2.1 Cephas Vs. 5a
Now, the word Cephas is Aramaic and is used 6 times in the NT, it means stone - which is another name for...
Peter, the Greek word of Peter is petros which means a small stone or pebble.
Peter is also called Simon.
In Gal.2:9 Cephas seems to be a pillar of the church…
9 and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.
Interesting that Peter is listed first by Paul because in all the lists of the Apostles, Peter is always listed first.
2.2 The Twelve or the Apostles Vs. 5b & 7b
2.2 The Twelve or the Apostles Vs. 5b & 7b
When Paul talks about the twelve he is including Peter with Matthias who replaced Judas in Acts 1:22-23…
22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” 23 And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Matthias replaced Judas, because in Acts 2:14 after the Holy Spirit came down we’re told Peter stood up with the eleven… that makes Twelve…
But chances are he is simply referring to the Apostles as the Twelve because if vs.7 is the same account as John 20:24 Thomas was not with them… so there were only Eleven… not Twelve…
24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
2.3 The 500 Vs. 6
2.3 The 500 Vs. 6
500 people all at once… now if you really want to prove something have 500 people witness it…
2.4 James Vs. 7
2.4 James Vs. 7
The half brother of Jesus: Matt.13:55 Jesus’ mother Mary & his brothers James, Joseph, Simon & Judas (not Iscariot).
19 But I saw none of the other apostles except James, the Lord’s brother.
He wrote the Book of James… & in 2002 Israel trip they found a burial box and chiseled into the side was: James the son of Joseph the brother of Jesus…
2.5 Paul Vs. 8
2.5 Paul Vs. 8
Paul Sees Jesus Resurrected Vs. 8 - Paul said in 1 Cor.9:1 Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord…
1 Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?
in Acts 9:5 on the road to Damascus when he saw a Light from heaven…
5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Because all of them believed in the Resurrection… they can be a Witness for the Gospel…
So we too are to be a Witness for the Gospel… Acts 1:8 you shall receive power… witness…
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Witness: martus, martyr… we’re to be willing to die for our faith…
Paul’s Unworthiness Vs. 9-10 - The only reason I am what I am is because of the Grace of God...
Because before God’s Grace I was a blasphemer... a persecutor... a Christian hater...
But the Grace of God touched my heart & transformed my life... & now I’m used mightily by God.
APPLICATION: The same can be true of us... once we accept the Grace of God then He will change our lives too…
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
There in Vs. 10 Paul worked harder then all of them… but his laboring was not in his own strength or power...
It was by the Grace of God, which was in him...
We all understand Grace for salvation, Eph.2:8-9, Rom.3:24 justified...
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
But God’s Grace doesn’t stop there...
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.
Wow, if we’re not serving God... by Grace of God... our service is not acceptable to God... because we’re serving by the power of the flesh or our own strength...
The same is true in every aspect of life:
32 “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,
2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.
1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
We’ve talk quite a bit about the Grace of God... but it all boils down to this, Do you Believe…
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
It’s a choice we have to make... It’s a choice we’ve already made... Matt.12:30 you are for Me or against Me...
13 Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other.
ENDING.....
