S-1> TEXT: Matthew 14:22-33 KEY VERSE: Proverbs 18:24
TEXT: Matthew 14:22-33
Matthew 14:22–33 KJV 1900
22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
KEY VERSE: Proverbs 18:24
S-2-KV> Proverbs 18:24
Proverbs 18:24 KJV 1900
24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
INTRODUCTION:
How many of you have every walked on the water?
If you have asked God to forgive you and you have received Jesus Christ into your heart, then you have experienced something like walking on the water.
S-3> Walking on the water is like taking a step of faith with Jesus.
S-4> Matthew 11:28-30
Matthew 11:28–30 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
S-5> This message is entitled, “Jesus Would Be There For His Friends.”
S-5> This is the sixth in the series, “WWJD (What Would Jesus Do)?”
Today we are going to take a little walk with Jesus.
How did Jesus speak to His disciples? How did Jesus respond to their questions?
S-6> How did Jesus treat His disciples? What did Jesus do for them?
Many times, what Jesus said, or what He did may not have seemed very nice, but what He did was out of love.
S-7> Sometimes Jesus’ words may have been harsh or crude, but they were from His heart in love toward those around Him.
S-8-CF> When you need a friend, Jesus will be there through thick and thin.
S-9 1) Pray For Your Friends.
S-10> Proverbs 17:17
Proverbs 17:17 KJV 1900
17 A friend loveth at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.
S-11> Has God placed someone in your life for you to befriend?
Pray for them. Pray for them when things are going well, and pray for them when things aren’t going so good. Whatever you do, pray for them.
S-12> Matthew 14:23
Matthew 14:23 KJV 1900
23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
One time, Jesus told His disciples that they didn’t have much faith, but that didn’t stop Him from praying for them when they were in trouble.
S-13> Matthew 8:23-27
Matthew 8:23–27 KJV 1900
23 And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. 24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. 25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
Jesus was up on the mountain, and He could see His friends toiling.
S-14> Matthew 14:24
Matthew 14:24 KJV 1900
24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
Jesus was praying.
S-15> Pray for your friends.
S-9 1) Pray For Your Friends.
S-16> 2) Go To Your Friends.
S-17> Matthew 14:25
Matthew 14:25 KJV 1900
25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
When the Lord allows you to see a need in your friend’s life, go to him.
God has allowed you to see this need for a reason.
S-18> Put your prayers in action, while you go to your friend.
If your friend knew what you were going to do, they might tell you no, but you go anyway.
S-19> As Jesus would do for us, so we need to do for one another.
Jesus went walking on the water to reach His disciples.
S-20> Do what you need to do to reach your friends.
S-9 1) Pray For Your Friends.
S-16> 2) Go To Your Friends.
S-20> 3) Encourage Your Friends.
S-21> Matthew 14:27
Matthew 14:27 KJV 1900
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
S-22> Share words of hope and encouragement with your friends.
There was a time when Jesus was speaking with His disciples and He told them something they didn’t fully understand, but later His words were an encouragement to them.
S-23> John 14:6-9
John 14:6–9 KJV 1900
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Share the Word of God.
Share the encouraging things the Lord puts in your heart for them.
S-24> Share about the unfailing love of God.
Be an encourager not a discourager.
S-9 1) Pray For Your Friends.
S-16> 2) Go To Your Friends.
S-20> 3) Encourage Your Friends.
S-25> 4) Call Your Friends.
S-26> Proverbs 27:6
Proverbs 27:6 KJV 1900
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
When you are in prayer for your friends, God may have you pray for a need, or prompt you to reach out to them.
S-27> Call your friends and let them know that you are praying for them.
S-28> Matthew 14:29
Matthew 14:29 KJV 1900
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
Jesus called out to the disciples and then He called and spoke directly with Peter.
Sometimes when we call our friends, God will have us say things that seem odd, or out a place. Maybe even a little crude or rude, but when God is leading by His Spirit, then it is always what is needed.
S-29> Luke 9:37-42
Luke 9:37–42 KJV 1900
37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. 38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. 41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
S-30> Time is short for us to reach our friends. Let’s encourage one another to reach out to more people so God can save them.
S-31> 1 Corinthians 3:8-9
1 Corinthians 3:8–9 KJV 1900
8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. 9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
S-9 1) Pray For Your Friends.
S-16> 2) Go To Your Friends.
S-20> 3) Encourage Your Friends.
S-25> 4) Call Your Friends.
S-32> 5) Catch A Hold Of Your Friends.
S-33> Matthew 14:31
Matthew 14:31 KJV 1900
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
S-34> Do everything in your ability to reach out and catch a hold of your friends. Don’t allow them to sink.
One day, Peter was walking on shaky ground and Jesus caught him and stopped him before he wandered away.
S-35> Mark 8:29-33
Mark 8:29–33 KJV 1900
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ. 30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him. 31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
S-36> If you see your friends sinking or slipping away, reach out to them, and catch them, and love them and help them and encourage them.
If they don’t listen, when you’ve done your best, just keep reaching out to them.
God will continue to call them and draw them. You remain faithful and be there for them because you are their friend.
