Presidential first acts.
We expect that wen a newly elected president takes office, after their inauguration speech, they go to work.
We expect their first act to be....presidential. Fulfill a campaign promise, set the tone for what kind of presidency they will have.
Trump - signed an executive order minimizing the economic burden of the Affordable Care Act.
Obama’s first legislation was a fair pay bill that said regardless of gender, race etc equal pay for equal work.
Biden rejoined the WHO.
Likewise, we might expect that Jesus’ first miracle would be to fulfil some prophecy, Heal the sick, Make the blind see, or the lame to walk.
He made wine for a party........
Jesus’ first recorded miracle.
Jesus’ first recorded miracle.
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;
2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
Five to seven days.
Day one the bridegroom would go to the father of the bride’s house and retrieve the bride.
Day two was the wedding feast.
If you want an interesting study, compare ancient jewish wedding customs and the second coming of Christ.
But at this wedding there was a problem.
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
What did she say to Jesus?
What was the look?
6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.
7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him.
9 When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom,
10 and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.”
11 This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
What about the water?
What about the water?
6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each.
20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
Beyond the symbolism
What can we take from this story?
Just to poke fun of the tea totaling baptist.....
God cares about the little things
God cares about the little things
This miracle was about saving this family from embarrassment.
6 “Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.
7 “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
Keep your good works to yourself
Keep your good works to yourself
Jesus didn’t take credit....
1 “Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.
2 “So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
3 “But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4 so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
The least will be first
The least will be first
The servants knew.
In Mathew 20 Jesus tells the parable of the laborers in the vineyard.
The ones that worked all day vs the ones that worked one hour.
They all got paid the same.
16 “So the last shall be first, and the first last.”
Its about God’s grace, not your work.
12 “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.
God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Faith like Mary
Faith like Mary
5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
She knew her son......
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
There is a sadness to this story. The sadness is that of the Headwaiter.
He praised the wrong person.
He was focused on the Wine.
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

What they figured out was what was important wast the chemical make up, or the molecular weight, but the sequence of these bases. It is considered the DNA coding.
“DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.”

Physicist and author Dr. Steven Meyer
“The information contained in an English sentence or computer software does not derive from the chemistry of the ink or the physics of magnetism, but from a source extrinsic to physics and chemistry altogether. Indeed, in both cases, the message transcends the properties of the medium. The information in DNA also transcends the properties of its material medium.”
