1 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s wife.
4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.
7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

No hope in His heart doubt has taken over
The moment we allow doubt to take the place of God on the throne of our heart - the enemy has us right where he wants us
The focus is turned from God to our problems and the power of your enemy
David was focusing on what Saul could and would do to him.
31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
Words of death ‘shall surely die’
David is a warrior - He knew not to listen to the enemy
1 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
2 Therefore David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
4 Then David inquired of the Lord yet again. And the Lord answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
8 And David inquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
1 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
19 And David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
Confused - inquired of the Lord
Fearful - Inquired of the Lord
Challenged -
Burdened -
Inquired of the Lord
Inquired of himself
David went to Samuel
David went to Jonathan for encouragement
David took refuge with priests

David said in his heart
What was he anointed to do?
17 And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
Jonathan encouraged David with the promise of God
Abigail encouraged David
30 And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
We need people around us who will encourage us in the promises of God
Be an encouraging word to others when they are struggling
There is no need to isolate when we struggle
Let others encourage you
Saul encouraged David
20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
We believe circumstances
discouragement in our heart more than God’s promises
We are in control of our thought life
Thoughts determine our feelings and feelings determine our actions
Pro 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:
The battle is the Lord’s - God is the victor in the Battles we face

Defecting to enemy territory is always a bad idea
Deception is involved
I will use my anger for the Lord
They pitched their tents in the enemy’s land
The enemy always makes his territory look hospitable
When someone has gained freedom from their past but starts to have a difficult time with discouragement
The enemy will use our past addictions as a safe place to return to
4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
A normality
Some relief
Some sleep
Moving away from responsibilities
leaving a spouse
Giving up on wayward children
Giving in to someone who has been seeking you to have a relationship with them that you know is wrong
I don’t want to fight anymore
Then you realize:
Temptation comes in
Guilt crashes down
The presence of God’s power leaves
and you are reminded that sin is only temporarily
Heb 11:25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;\
You can choose your sin but you can’t choose your chastisement
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; And the end of that mirth is heaviness.
Pro 3:12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Pro 14:14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.
Leaving church doesn’t solve anything
Despising accountability is not the way to grow and become a joyful christian
Blaming the church for our problems
The world will not solve our problems
5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

Discouragement will lead to serving the world
Anointed to be king humbling himself to the enemy
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
Yielding to sin leads us to serving sin
Defeated mind leads to lying
8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.
10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.
11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.
