Sorry Folks! We Are On A Battleship, Not A Cruiseship!

Who: Timothy was Paul’s protege’ who came into contact with Paul around 63-65AD. When Paul was on his second missionary trip to Lystra. (Which is now modern day Klistra, Turkey) Timothy received his name, which means “one who honors God,” from his mother (Eunice) and grandmother (Lois), devout Jews who became believers in the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Tim. 1:5). They taught Timothy the OT Scriptures from his childhood (2 Tim. 3:15). His father was a Greek (Acts 16:1), who may have died before Timothy met Paul. Timothy was from Lystra (Acts 16:1–3), a city in the Roman province of Galatia (part of modern Turkey). Although Timothy was very young (probably in his late teens or early twenties, since about fifteen years later Paul referred to him as a young man, 4:12), he had a reputation for godliness (Acts 16:2). Timothy was to be Paul’s disciple, friend, and co-laborer for the rest of the apostle’s life, ministering with him in Berea (Acts 17:14), Athens (Acts 17:15), Corinth (Acts 18:5; 2 Cor. 1:19), and accompanying him on his trip to Jerusalem (Acts 20:4). He was with Paul in his first Roman imprisonment and went to Philippi (2:19–23) after Paul’s release. In addition, Paul frequently mentions Timothy in his epistles (Rom. 16:21; 2 Cor. 1:1; Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:1; 1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1; Philem. (1). Paul often sent Timothy to churches as his representative (1 Cor. 4:17; 16:10; Phil. 2:19; 1 Thess. 3:2), and 1 Timothy finds him on another assignment, serving as pastor of the church at Ephesus (1:3). According to Heb. 13:23, Timothy was imprisoned somewhere and released.
What/Why: This is a letter that Paul sends to Timothy for all believers in the Ephesian churches. Where Paul leaves Timothy to Pastor (Bring Oversight) to oversee the churches. The purpose of the letter is to restructure what has become unstructured. False Doctrine. disorder in worship. Getting qualified leaders. Dealing with materialism and a few other unGodly issues.
Did you know The earliest organization of the Church in Jerusalem was, according to most scholars, similar to that of Jewish synagogues, but it had a council or college of ordained presbyters (πρεσβύτεροι, 'elders'). In Acts 11:30[3] and Acts 15:22, a collegiate system of government in Jerusalem is chaired by James the Just, according to tradition the first bishop of the city. In Acts 14:23, the Apostle Paul ordains presbyters in churches in Anatolia. The word presbyter was not yet distinguished from overseer (ἐπίσκοπος, episkopos, later used exclusively to mean bishop), as in Acts 20:17,[7] Titus 1:5–7 and 1 Peter 5:1.The earliest writings of the Apostolic Fathers, the Didache and the First Epistle of Clement, for example, show the church used two terms for local church offices—presbyters (seen by many as an interchangeable term with episkopos or overseer) and deacon. In the First epistle to Timothy and Epistle to Titus in the New Testament a more clearly defined episcopate can be seen. Both letters state that Paul had left Timothy in Ephesus and Titus in Crete to oversee the local church. Paul commands Titus to ordain presbyters/bishops and to exercise general oversight.
Early sources are unclear but various groups of Christian communities may have had the bishop surrounded by a group or college functioning as leaders of the local churches. Eventually the head or "monarchic" bishop came to rule more clearly, and all local churches would eventually follow the example of the other churches and structure themselves after the model of the others with the one bishop in clearer charge, though the role of the body of presbyters remained important.
Eventually, as Christendom grew, bishops no longer directly served individual congregations. Instead, the metropolitan bishop (the bishop in a large city) appointed priests to minister each congregation, acting as the bishop's delegate.
Where: Paul went on to Macedonia, from where he wrote Timothy this letter to help him carry out his task in the church (cf. 3:14, 15).
How: Does this apply to us? Simply gives us directions on what, why and how we as the church should live and look like. After all the church represents, God’s house. We have one assignment as the church - To look like Christ to a world that is dying in sin.
1 Timothy 1:1–2 NLT
1 This letter is from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, appointed by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus, who gives us hope. 2 I am writing to Timothy, my true son in the faith. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.
1. Who gives us hope? Jesus gives us hope. Hope is expectation . a firm persuasion. What are you persuade on? That I will spend eternity with God my father. What else are you persuaded on? Hebrews 11:1
Hebrews 11:1 NLT
1 Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.
2. Paul is being sincere when he says this about Timothy being a true son. Why didn’t he just call him a son? Explain how some call Pastor Dad but they are really Bastards.
Grace - Favor The goodwill of God. Gratitude with joy!
Mercy - Compassion Leniency shown towards an offender by a person or agency of authority.
Peace - Harmony Harmonious relations and freedom from disputes; especially during the absence of war.
2 John 3 NLT
3 Grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love.
1 Timothy 1:3–7 NLT
3 When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth. 4 Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations, which don’t help people live a life of faith in God. 5 The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. 6 But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions. 7 They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.
3. How do we stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth? We get in our Word - the Bible and study it. We pray and ask God to reveal to us the things we cannot see. How do we do that?
Get a good Study Bible Pick a translation you can understand. The more you spend time in it. The more you will begin to see the treasures you couldn’t see before.
Get a good Bible Commentary Pick one that will work with your Bible of choice. Look at it from another perspective as God makes it clearer to you.
Get a good Bible Reference Book Pick one that will have a Dictionary, Encyclopedia, and Concordance. Learn how to investigate the Word of God. (Inductive Bible Study)
Matthew 24:35 NLT
35 Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.
Psalm 119:130 NLT
130 The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.
Proverbs 2:6 NLT
6 For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 4:20–21 NLT
20 My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. 21 Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart,
John 7:16 NLT
16 So Jesus told them, “My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me.
John 15:7 NLT
7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!
4. Our goal is to learn to live a life of meaning to God! Everything else is pointless.
What is a life of meaning to God? One in which everything you do revolves around God.
Colossians 3:23 NCV
23 In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you were doing it for the Lord, not for people.
Keep God the center point make Him the main thing. Everything else, will line up.
Matthew 6:33 NLT
33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
5. Filled with love, where does this kinda love come from? From God. What kinda love is it?
Pure - Clean; freedom from guilt or responsibility. Ritually pure!
Heart - Clear minded, knowing right from wrong and dealing with the inner self.
Clear Conscience - Moral sensitivity. We live a world where peoples Moral Compass is gone or out of wack! We say right is wrong and we say wrong is right!
Isaiah 5:20 NCV
20 How terrible it will be for people who call good things bad and bad things good, who think darkness is light and light is darkness, who think sour is sweet and sweet is sour.
Genuine Faith - Sincere, without hypocrisy.
6. They have turned away from these things. What things? The things of God. To busy getting there truth from other gods. Social Media, CNN, FOX, TV Personalities, Athletes etc… all fighting for your eyes and ears.
Luke 11:34 NLT
34 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when it is unhealthy, your body is filled with darkness.
This is referring to what you put into your heart, mind and soul. If you are filled with greed, lust and all these things that are laid before you then you will begin to say it’s good but you are only deceiving yourself. God is not mocked. Galatians 1:6.
7. They want to be known as teachers of the law of Mose. Who wants to be known? False teachers!
Jude 4 NLT
4 I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
1 Timothy 1:8–11 NLT
8 We know that the law is good when used correctly. 9 For the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders. 10 The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching 11 that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.
8. Why is the law good when used correctly? Because it’s what holds the house together. What is the house? The Church! Us!
Matthew 5:17 NLT
17 “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
Stay to the commandments of God’s Word. Follow the 10 commandments and we are fulfilling the law! But we can’t! Exactly right and this is why Jesus was sent to show us how to fulfill the law! So we would have a model to follow.
Romans 13:8 NLT
8 Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.
9/10 are showing who is the law breakers. It is not those of us who are making an attempt to love like Christ. It’s those who love like their father Satan. The one who comes to kill, steal and destroy.
1 Peter 5:8 NCV
8 Control yourselves and be careful! The devil, your enemy, goes around like a roaring lion looking for someone to eat.
11. Now Paul reflects on how good God’s plan is and how it’s been entrusted to us! For what? To live by for all to see!
1 Timothy 1:12–17 NLT
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him, 13 even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief. 14 Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus. 15 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. 16 But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.
12-16 Is Paul exhorting the church! It’s testimony time! That is enough to make you shout right there when you think of how God saved you through Jesus Cleansing blood!
16b But then look at what he says to us! Share your story for the sole purpose to lead others to Christ! This is why Ministry looks like you. This is why we are all called to be ministers!
Ephesians 1:5 NLT
5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
Everyone is not in God’s family some chose to be in the family of Satan and now you will see why we are at war as believers. This is why we are on a battleship and not a cruise ship! This is not about make you feel good! It’s about we are fighting to save souls that God has called to be with him in His family! As His children!
17 He closes out with a reminder of who God is! Eternal, King, Unseen one who NEVER DIES! He alone is God! Amen!
1 Timothy 1:18–20 NLT
18 Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord’s battles. 19 Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked. 20 Hymenaeus and Alexander are two examples. I threw them out and handed them over to Satan so they might learn not to blaspheme God.
18. When Paul talks about the prophecy of Timothy’s commission. He is referring to when Timothy was ordained. We have all been called to proclaim the Gospel! This awesome message of Hope!
Mark 16:15 NLT
15 And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.
Matthew 28:19–20 NLT
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
How do we make disciples! We access all avenues laid before us. Social media, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.. Podcast, Youtube, Radio, etc… There is no longer excuses about cost. Most of this stuff is free now! If it is a cost it’s so minimal that you could spare 4 starbucks coffee a month and afford the platforms.
18b What battle is Paul talking about? The one where Timothy has to face those who have tried to steer the ship into dangerous territory. What battle will you face? Will it be your loved one? Will it be your co-worker? Will it be the wolf in sheep’s clothing? What ever the case have your guard up.
19 Paul uses a term reflecting to the illustration he paints for Timothy in 18b This war Timothy! We don’t have time to play nice and try to be buddy, buddy! Some will come back into the fold but some don’t want to and they want to take you out with them because their father Satan has instructed them to do so. By doing so You will steer this ship in the rocks and destroy God’s plan for you! Look at the warning signs before you get too close to the rocks. What warning signs do you see around you?
Proverbs 22:3 CEV
3 When you see trouble coming, don’t be stupid and walk right into it— be smart and hide.
Proverbs 14:7 NLT
7 Stay away from fools, for you won’t find knowledge on their lips.
Proverbs 17:12 NLT
12 It is safer to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than to confront a fool caught in foolishness.
20. Paul gives an example of these two men. Who were more than likely elders at the Ephesus church. Paul had to put these men out of the church. Do you know of someone who has shipwrecked their faith?
Acts 20:29–31 NLT
29 I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock. 30 Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following. 31 Watch out! Remember the three years I was with you—my constant watch and care over you night and day, and my many tears for you.
There will always be those who will be trying to build their own kingdom! They will preach their own gospel, with half truths and they will be money motivated and not Christ saving message motivated. When is the last time you saw someone like this?
Let’s Pray.
