Treasure
Mark 10:17-31
Scripture
Mark 10:17-31
17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is[b]to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him,[c] “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
Story 1
The time my best friend chose a girl over me for a team sport
Application 1
The cost of following Jesus
Being “good” isn’t good enough
Jesus isn’t Just good, but God
Man considers them equals
Man wants to earn his way to heaven
By human standards could
Other religious leaders would say he’s good
Modern psychologist would say he’s good
He still has an idol
The man’s idol is himself
His status, power, wealth, identity
We do this
B. Good works can’t be the solution
If it were Jesus would call out all of his sins
He would just go home and try harder
C. Instead He invites him in at the cost of himself
V21 - Jesus looked at him and loved him
Jesus wants all of us
True discipleship encompasses our whole life
There are no transformer christians
Jesus isn’t looking to keep it casual
D. Especially the one thing
What’s your one thing?
An idol is a good thing turned into a god thing
What we idolize we can demonize
What if I made my wife my god?
She would eventually let me down and i would resent her; because no one can fulfill God’s role
It’s not about being poor;
The problem isn’t a thing, but our hearts
E. That’s the problem, we can fix our hearts; only Jesus does that
Jews took wealth as a sign of God’s favor
Part of it was the corrupt sacrificial system
Only the rich could afford to sacrifice
Jesus doesn’t give them an easy solution, but pushes further
V27 - impossible for men, not for God
Story 2
Selling everything I own to get an amp.
Supporting Scripture
Philippians 3:7-8
7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
Application 2
The profit of following Jesus
Peter is looking for his reward
Christ promises 4 things
The Church
Persecutions
Eternal life
Justice
He gives us a community of faith
He promises troubles, but with a purpose
He promises Himself!
He promises to make all things right!
Jesus is promising if we surrender all for Him and the gospel that He will give us the greatest gift imaginable HIMSELF!
The same thing He offered the rich young ruler
He’s not promising you things
He’s not promising to trade good behaviour for genie wishes
He’s not in your debt
Out of His goodness He takes our brokenness and offers us Himself!
Conclusion
Is Jesus your greatest treasure?
