Living For The Real World
GET RID OF THE GARBAGE
1 So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. 2 Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, 3 now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.
Get Rid Of Evil Behavior
Rid: to renounce, lay off or down, to lay aside. Cast off the works of darkness, to throw off from.
Evil: Wickedness as an evil habit of the mind.
Crave: ask, desire, beg, require, call for.
What’s the puprose of craving the Word of God? So we can grow into the full experience of Salvation.
So what is this "pure spiritual milk" we need to hunger for? The word "pure" simply means undiluted or uncontaminated.
So this command means we must learn to crave the undiluted Word of God, as a newborn craves milk. By drinking this milk, taking in God's Word, drawing close to Christ, believers will continue to grow up in our salvation.
20 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
PREPARE FOR ACTION
13 So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.
3 Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 Soldiers don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them.
When we are trying to hang on to the things of this world and server Christ you are like a double agent trying to keep you foot in the enemies camp and trying to hold on the Christ at the same time. It never works.
24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
If we know hard times are coming, why aren’t we preparing for action
WALK IN HOLINESS
Holiness: Holy, set apart, sanctified, consecrated, saint. It means chaste, pure. Its fundamental idea is separation, consecration, devotion to the service of Deity, sharing in God’s purity and abstaining from earth’s defilement.
(I) Pure, clean, ceremonially or morally clean, including the idea of deserved respect, reverence.
(A) It particularly means perfect, without blemish.
1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
(B) Metaphorically it means morally pure, upright, blameless in heart and life, virtuous, holy.
14 So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 15 But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
KEEP AN ETERNAL MINDSET
17 And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.” 18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. 19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. 21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.
We should see ourselves as foreigners
When we remember the weight of Christ’s sacrifice, we stay focused on what is important
We lose the eternal perspective when we forget how precious Christ’s sacrifice was.
Christ Ransomed you. Explain the ransom concept
RANSOM: REDEEM, REDEMPTION, RESCUE, SATISFACTION; also PAYMENT, “price of release,” etc.
Ransom is the price paid to redeem someone or something.
AS WE WALK IN PURITY, WE SHOULD BE LOVING ONE ANOTHER
22 You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. 23 For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 24 As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. 25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
