The reason we sit at the feet of Jesus is because He is the Son of God and He has the words of Christ. The truth we learn from Jesus is absolute because it is always consistent with the character and nature of God. Sound doctrine about God, ourselves, others, and creation cause us to live in freedom and righteousness.

Introduction
It is always an amazing feet with humanity defies or controls nature.
Like Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
No really I’m thinking of Ships.
ships on the ocean, ships under the ocean, air ships in the sky, space ships to the moon. We don’t actually overcome nature but embrace and understand the laws of nature. The rules of nature don’t change, so we have to work with nature to produce the desired result.
Gravity, Buoyancy, air pressure, and vacuum (I’m a science nerd, what can I say)
As new ideas are presented the truth must be applied in every aspect of the project, and when it all rings true we say the idea is sound.
As we sit at the feet of Jesus over the next three weeks we are going to ask Him, “Jesus would you teach us sound doctrine.” What is sound doctrine, and why is it so important?
People have so many ideas about God, life, eternity, existence, themselves, and each other that is hard to know who is right and who is wrong.
The word Doctrine means “Truth.”
Defining Sound Doctrine:
“The teaching of God that is consistent with his character and nature as revealed in God’s Holy Word.”
Examples:
False: “God hates sin but loves the sinner.”
True: “God’s love for humanity provides a way of redemption through the sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
False: “If God is love how could he send anyone to hell?”
True: “God is no respecter of persons and therefore whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Revelation 20:14–15 ESV
14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
False: “We are all God’s children.”
True: God’s children have been born again by the Spirit of God and accepted in the beloved family.
John 1:12 ESV
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Sound Doctrine is hard to come by these days. People have an idea about God and then fill in the blanks with their own ideas to round out their theory or narrative. Sound Doctrine only comes from a well rounded understanding of God’s character and nature that he has revealed to us through His Word.
Paul entrusted his early ministries to two young men: Timothy, the Bishop in Ephesus and Titus, the Bishop of Crete. These men were to take the full counsel of God they had received from Paul and teach it to others as sound doctrine.

The Faithful receive Sound Doctrine.

“Just like Travis Kelce receiving a pass from Patrick Mahomes.” Now that is some Sound Doctrine!
2 Timothy 2:2 ESV
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

The Revelation of God

The apostles and prophets had been getting direct revelation from God and writing it down. But these men were to take that revelation of God and entrust it to others which is the same job I have today.

The Faithful men to receive that revelation

A faithful man works out the truth of God.

A faithful man fleshes out the truth of God.

A faithful man gives out the truth of God.

Titus is a faithful man of God.

Titus 1:1–4 ESV
1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began 3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior; 4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
We know that Titus was a Greek and uncircumcised by choice.
We know that Titus had been walking with Paul from the early days of his ministry.
We know that Titus was with Paul on many of his missionary journeys
And we know that Titus was appointed by Paul to appoint elders of sound doctrine in every town in Crete.
Titus 1:5 ESV
5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—
20 Cities
God is not the author of confusion, but has set all things in order. Titus was to organize the church of Crete and appoint elders to oversee the God’s people in every city.

Are you a faithful person with the truth God has revealed to you.

Do you work it out in your life.
Do you flesh it out in your life.
Do you give it out to others.

The Faithful live out Sound Doctrine.

As both Timothy and Titus are looking for faithful men, Paul gives them a criteria to go by.
Titus 1:6–8 ESV
6 if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. 7 For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, 8 but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

The difference in qualifications and goals.

Qualifications are something you have before the work begins.
Goals are things you try to accomplish in the future.

The difference in learning and growing

Learning requires no change on your part. We as a society are ever learning.
2 Timothy 3:1 ESV
1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.
2 Timothy 3:7 ESV
7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.
2 Timothy 4:2–4 ESV
2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Growing requires spiritual, emotional, and physical change as we come into alignment with God’s character and nature.

The Faithful Defend Sound Doctrine.

Titus 1:9 ESV
9 He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Reliant Core Value: Bible Believers. “The Bible is our final authority for all life and practice.”
Titus 1:10–14 ESV
10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.
