KEY POINTS

1. Baptism was important to Jesus.

-Baptism was undeniably supported by Jesus.
-Was baptism at this point an act of repentance and renewal? The argument John mentions goes from ceremonial washing to, “hey that guy is stealing all of our baptisms”.
-It takes on a significant role in the life of the NT church
-What is the biblical model of baptism in the NT after the resurrection?
-There is first always a presentation of the gospel, then an acknowledgment of belief and finally the element of water.
Acts 8:35–39 NIV
Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
-Aside from belief (which we covered extensively last week) I’d like to say this about baptism.

-Baptism is immersion into water.

All the examples of baptism we have in the NT are going down into the water.
-Baptism is illustrates that we are identifying with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
-One of Paul’s most powerful teachings on baptism comes form Galatians 3:26-29
Galatians 3:26–29 NIV
So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
-As we get further into the text the apostle John begins to develop his case for the Supremacy of Jesus.
-Fist by acknowledging that

2. John (the Baptist) understands his role.

-He restates his original claim that he is not the Messiah but the one who goes before him. But listen to how he begins this statement “A person can receive only what is given the from heaven.”

-John uses the example of a bridal party to make his point.

-John is describing himself as what we might call a “best-man”
-His role is important but again it is secondary.

-John humility is unprecedented and should be the attitude of every follower of Christ.

-His attitude about this culminates in a powerful statement.
John 3:30 NIV
He must become greater; I must become less.”
For those who would learn God’s ways, humility is the first thing, humility is the second, humility is the third.
Augustine of Hippo

3. John attests (clearly) to the supremacy of Christ.

-Jesus is no mere man, He has come from above.

-His origin is supernatural and because he is from above he sits supremely above all.
-Testifying to what he has seen?

-Jesus testifies to the will and truth of God who sent him.

-This is a claim that could easily be interpreted as blasphemy.
-Listen John states, he “speaks the words of God”. Such a claim would indicate privileged information. This kind of talk could get a man killed.
Matthew 26:62–66 NIV
Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,” they answered.
-Finally John makes this ultimate claim about the supremacy

-God has entrusted everything to him...EVERYTHING!

-He places the the salvation of mankind squarely on the shoulders of Jesus.
-All of scripture has been pointing to and leading up to Jesus.
-And here is the cool part, the one in whom God has placed everything has in turn charged us with the responsibility to carry the gospel on.
Matthew 28:17–19 NIV
When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

APPLICATION/IMPLICATIONS

1. If you’ve not been baptized, what’s keeping you from doing it?

2. What are some steps to making Christ greater and making self less?

a. Develop a Christian worldview.

b. Memorize and apply

Galatians 2:20 NIV
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

c. Believe in the Son.

-This is the closing argument of Chapter 3. It sounds strangely familiar doesn’t. John is restating what was said in 3:18.
