12: When Temptation Visits (Luke 4:1-13)

OPENER I love salt water fishing. A few years ago I had one of my best fishing days ever. A week before, I didn't have much success as I watched every type of bait into the water that I had: jigs, top-water plugs, gold spoons, and more. But the next week was altogether different. You see, a friend of mine had chartered a boat with a professional fisherman. He took mental notes on where the fish were and how to best catch them. And so we took that wisdom and set off for about 10 foot of water. Rather than use a fake bait, we used the real thing - live pin fish under a popping cork. I can't remember when I've had more fun. The colorful cork would submerge & fly through the water sideways. We would set the hook, hear the drag scream, and eventually land the gator trout. (caveman grunt) Man, I get excited just talking about it!
These fish were much OLDER & much BIGGER than I had been used to catching with fake bait. Maybe the reason why these fish had not been caught was because they could tell the fake stuff from the real stuff. So why were WE catching them? Its simple really. We gave them what they wanted, but it was attached to something they didnt want - something they couldnt see - the hook. Had they had known about the hook, it's doubtful they would've taken the bait.
So too, When Temptation Comes, we dont often look for the hook. We see something that we want and we take a bite without considering the consequences. Sometimes we can dislodge the hook, but not without a fight and lingering scars.
When Temptation Visits, different people respond different ways.
Some of us have given in so many times that our consciences are like calloused fingers - no longer sensitive to the pain. When temptation visits, we quickly bite the bait.
(When temptation visits) Some of us have learned from the past. Its been a while since we have tasted the bait, but When temptation visits, we are still drawn to take a quick peak.
But what it we were fully awarethat the bait - even if its real - is hanging from a HOOK.
When was the last time temptation came for a visit?
How did it turn out? Did you swim off, take a bite, or just check it out from a distance?
What will you do the next time?
Today we discover how Jesus overcame temptation and what that means for us.
First, this should encourage you to know that its NOT sin to BE tempted. If it were, then Jesus would have sinned and would not be an adequate Savior for you and me. Every human being will be tempted. The only question is whether or not we will resist or bow When Temptation Visits.
The old Chinese proverb says: "You cannot keep the bird from flying over your head, but you can keep it from nesting in your hair."
Context: You will remember that Jesus was baptized by John: the Holy Spirit descended on Him & God the Father said, "You are my son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased." (Luke 3:22) It is directly after this experience that the 30 year old God-man is sent out to battle.

Luke 4:1-2a (NIV)

Luke 4:1-2a (NIV)
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.
This is reminiscent of Moses being with God 40 days and nights without food or water as he wrote out the commandments (Ex. 34:28).
So too, Elijah fasted for 40 days (1 Kgs. 19:8).
Luke notes that Jesus was tempted by the devil throughout this forty days.
You think YOU have faced temptation? Not like THIS you havent!
The term devil is the Greek term diabolos (διάβολος) literally meaningslanderer.
This is the one who tempted Adam & Eveand they fell. And ever since then he has been perfecting his temptation techniques on Adams family - those created in the image of God. And NOW he gets his shot at his Creator - in human form. (This reminds me of Clubber Lang (aka. Mr. T) snarling at Rocky and boasting, Im gonna bust you up.Rocky responds, Go for it.)
The bell rings & the 40 day battle begins. The one who has knocked out so many sons of Adam, now faces the Adam 2.0. I find it interesting that Luke tracks Jesus to Adam, the son of God.(3:38) just before Jesus goes to be tempted.
Now, before we move further, I want to quickly deal with a question that often comes up. James 1:13 says that God cannot be tempted by evil. This leads some to say that Jesus couldnt be God OR it throws some of us into a tail-spin. But is THAT what James, the half-brother of Jesus, is intending? Nope. James is demonstrating the difference between God and man. God will not - CANNOT - do evil. Therefore evil temptations have no allure & no power over Him who is Perfect and Pure. God is immune to the temptations that man faces. And THISis what makes the temptation story we are reading so powerful! Because Jesus is God who became a man - to specifically face the same temptations we face.6350261117Hebrews 2:14–17 (NIV)14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.Hebrews 2:14–17 (NIV)14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.Hebrews 2:1417 (NIV)14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of deaththat is, the devil15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abrahams descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

We dont know what temptations Jesus had faced over these 40 days, but He didnt cheat. At this point Adam 2.0 had outlasted all the enemys attempts.
But this is the devils Super Bowl which Im certain
is the theological truth behind Bobby Bouchers momma declaring: fooseball is dadebil.
The ultimate prize would be to defeat Jesus. Yet, to this point, no attack has worked. But now Jesus is physically tired, drained. Its the 4th quarter & this game will soon come to an end, so now is the time that the accuser must launch his 3 greatest trick-plays.6350186155Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)
2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
SoDoes GOD get hungry? NOwith this exception: But when God puts on skin, then he experiences what WE experience. He is not a distant deity. He DOES understand our strugglesAs we are about to see, He has been there, done that.
6350220660Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.
Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)
2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.
Luke 4:2b-3 (NIV)
2 He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.
Jesus was hungryJUST LIKE YOU WOULD BE after not eating for 40 days.
And so the devil capitalizes on a humans most powerful desire - food.
So YOURE the One who is greater than all others? PROVE IT! After 40 days you must be famished! Dont sacrifice the desires of Your body. You dont have to. Just turn this stone into bread.
After all, what WOULD be wrong with feeding Himself? Jesus would later feed thousands of others with bread and fish. He would turn water into wine. Why not do this for Himself?
On a side note, Jesus NEVER performed a miracle to satisfy himself. EVERY MIRACLE Jesus did was to benefit others.
So THIS is the temptation: Tell this stone to become bread? Whats wrong with THAT?
Well, theres something more to this suggestion, an undercurrent flowing that we cant see. Jesus knows it is not yet time to eat. There is something MORE IMPORTANT than feeding Himself.
Fully human, He is waiting for the Father to provide for His physical needs. The accuser is suggesting that the Father didnt have His best interests in mind. So the devil uses - quite literally - the oldest trick in the book.
Here we see
Temptation #1: Doubt Gods Love & Satisfy Yourself
Its the same temptation that caused Adam & Eve to falland its the same trick used today - The enemy whispers Its been so long! Why wait onfood, sex, money, position, power? Gods trying to keep you from something good. If He really loved you, He wouldnt keep you from THIS. Dont wait on Him. After all, you deserve thisNOW! Satisfy yourself.
But this 2nd Adam - although hungry & drained - will not cower.
He will take NO SHORTCUTS!6350193539Luke 4:4 (NIV)4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”Luke 4:4 (NIV)4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”Luke 4:4 (NIV)4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone.’”Luke 4:4 (NIV)4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
Luke 4:4 (NIV)
4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
Luke 4:4 (NIV)
4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
It is written - WHERE? It is written in Deut. 8:3:
man does not live on bread alone
but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
The context: Yahweh God had provided manna for his people in the wilderness for 40 years, but He reminds them that this only sustains the stomach for a moment, but it does not satisfy the soul. Trusting Gods words is what satisfies the soul.
Bread satisfies the stomach.
Knowing and doing Gods word satisfies the soul.
This is why, Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
This is the heartbeat of Jesus - to trust the Father & obey His words. Later in His ministry the disciples notice that Jesus is once again hungry and they are concerned about him eating. Jesus responds, My foodis to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.(Jn. 4:34)
So even now - 40 days without food -
Trusting the Fathers HEART, Jesus will wait on the Fathers HAND.
How Jesus responded showed Who Jesus trusted. This is true for us too.

BIG TRUTH
HOW I Behave proves WHO I Believe.
BIG TRUTH
HOW I Behave proves WHO I Believe.
The Devil has baited the hookand this one didnt work.
Jesus would not Doubt Gods Love & Satisfy Himself.
Jesus proved that He trusted His Father over His hunger.
But different fish respond to different baits, so the devil re-baits the hook.
left6350Luke 4:5-7 (NIV)5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”Luke 4:5-7 (NIV)5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.Luke 4:5-7 (NIV)5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.Jesus looks out over the vast amount of land ruled by others - as far as the eye can see. And the devil claims all the kingdoms of the world have been given to him. In John 12:31, 14:30 & 16:11 Jesus refers to the devil as the ruler of this world, meaning his evil influence dominates the nations of the world. But much of Scripture declares that all belongs to God. So now the prideful Father of lies offers something he doesnt really have. He is not the ultimate ruler, God is. But the accuser is simply baiting the hook. And here is
Luke 4:5-7 (NIV)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.
Temptation #2: Pursue the Crown. Bypass the Cross.
Look Jesus. We all know the plan is for You to be King. Lets just speed up the process. Sidestep the suffering and take the throne. And all you have to do is (HERES THE HOOK): bow your knee to me.
Pursue the Crown. Bypass the Cross. What if He took THAT bait? Then we would have no hope. If not for His suffering, you and I would have NO salvation!
But Jesus would have none of it. He will be the suffering servant before He becomes the conquering king. And regardless of the offer, He will bow to none other.
left6350Luke 4:8 (NIV)8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”Luke 4:8 (NIV)8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”Luke 4:8 (NIV)8 Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”Luke 4:8 (NIV)8 Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”Once again, Jesus counters the devil withScripture. (Deut. 6:13 fear the Lord)
Luke 4:8 (NIV)
8 Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
Luke 4:8 (NIV)
8 Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
Are you getting the idea that Scripture is a pretty big deal to Jesus?
How significant is the Scripture in your life? Do you read it? Do you memorize it? Do you obey it? Or do you make the childish claim, I dont have enough time.
Those who dont have enough time for Gods Scripture are primed to be picked off. They are much more likely to give into the suggestion to Pursue the Crown & Bypass the Cross. When worshiping the Lord your God and serving Him onlycosts a friendship, a girlfriend/boyfriend, a drug habit, a job, a prominent position, those who dont know or trust Gods Word will choose to PROSPER rather than suffer - to Pursue the Crown & Bypass the Cross.
And whether they know it or not, they bow their knee to the Devil.
When Temptation Visits you choose who to trust.
In that moment you would do well to remind yourself that

Finallythe Devil baits the hook one more time. And since Jesus relies on the authority of Gods Scripture, the Devil changes tactics.
left6350Luke 4:9-11 (NIV)9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”Luke 4:9-11 (NIV)9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. If you are the Son of God,he said, throw yourself down from here. If you are the Son of God,he said, throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”Do YOU value the authority of Scripture? Do you know it well? So did Jesus. So here comes
Luke 4:9-11 (NIV)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
If you are the Son of God,he said, throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
Temptation #3: Twist the intention of Scripture.
The devil quoted from the Septuagint translation of Psalm 91:1112.
Did you get THAT? THE DEVIL quoted Scripture.
But Ps. 91 was not a promise that God will protect Jesus from doing something foolish. This was like saying, Pull the trigger - God can keep the gun from firing.Foolishness.
Ps. 91 is not encouraging us to TEST God. Instead it encourages us to TRUST God.
left6350Luke 4:12 (NIV)12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:16]Luke 4:12 (NIV)12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:16]Luke 4:12 (NIV)12 Jesus answered, It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:16]Luke 4:12 (NIV)12 Jesus answered, It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:16]When the Devil twisted the intention of Scripture, Jesus quickly counters with what is clear from Scripture.
Luke 4:12 (NIV)
12 Jesus answered, It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:16]
Luke 4:12 (NIV)
12 Jesus answered, It is said: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deut. 6:16]
The Devil continues this tactic today and thousands of people have no discernment and are lulled to sleep by those who misuse the Scripture for their own interests. This is one of the enemys most dangerous baits for those who claim to trust Scripture. Like Jesus, we must learn how to rightly interpret Scripture. We did a 9 weeks series called The Book- we spent 3 of those weeks learning how to rightly interpret Scripture.
Question those who Quote Scripture. Just because someone quotes Scripture doesnt mean they are godly - see the Devils example. Use discernment! I hear Christians suck down new-age philosophy all the time and then point to Scripture as a reference! The power of life and death is in the tongue. Speak it into existence.- Garbage. Show me where that is TAUGHT in the Bible!
Context is Key to Interpretation.
Never read A Bible verse.
Author & Audience before application.
Is it a DESCRIPTION (what happened) or PRESCRIPTION (what SHOULD happen)?
Interpret what is UNCLEAR by what IS CLEAR. For example, some teachers use a passage that is UNCLEAR to teach that Jesus went to hell to finish the work of salvation. Yet many other Scripture passages make CLEAR that Jesus finished the work on the cross.
What do you do when others Twist the intention of Scripture? Bite the bait? Or do you see it for what it is - One of the Devils greatest tricks? If He used it on Jesushell use it on you.
Will you go back to the Bible and see what it says and means? Will you warn others of this Devilish tactic?
How Jesus behaved proved that Jesus Believed the Father rather than the Devil.
The enemy left with his tail between his legsbut it would not be the last time Jesus experienced His slippery tactics.

5 Step Prep for When Temptation Visits
Trust Jesus for forgiveness. Those who TRUST Jesus, those who repent of their sin - receive the GIFT of the Holy Spirit - the SAME Holy Spirit that lived in Jesus! He lives IN you and will empower you to live in righteousness.
Study the Scripture. Wonder what Gods view is? You probably know insidebut take time to examine the Scripture.
Make wise choices. (Dont be Dumb) You know when you are most tempted. Dont put yourself in a tough situation. Peers who influence, time of the day, isolated, physically tired.
Find the Escape Hatch. 1 Cor. 10:13 says God will provide a way out of temptation. Find it and run!
Tell a brother/sister. Sin grows in the dark. Will you tell a fellow believer about your struggle? He or she can pray for you & help you. How does Satan bait your hook? Most people dont do thisuntil its TOO LATE.
Oh how many families could have been salvaged. Oh how many self-destructive actions could have been detoured. Oh how many could have lived in forgiveness and grace instead of fear & shame!
When Temptation Visitsfollow the example of our King and remind yourself
