Today is commonly referred to as Palm Sunday. Next Sunday is Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday means Jesus rose from the dead. Palm Sunday means what?
21:1-9 (KJV)
1 Matthew And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
John 12:12-15 (KJV)
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt. This was a quote from Zecharias the prophet 9:9.
Luke 19:32-44 (KJV)
32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.
33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?
34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.
35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.
36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.
37 And when he the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a was come nigh, even now at the descent of loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept (Sob of great agony) over it,
42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
Multitudes of people are here maybe hundreds or maybe thousands, and they are crying Hosanna to the name of Jesus. Hosanna in the highest, Glory in the highest, peace in heaven, blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord.
But overall that day the people actually rejected Him. The authorities rejected Him and many of the people that were crying Hosanna in just a few days will be crying crucify Him.
It is amazing what can happen in a very short span of time. Actually your life is not defined by the mass amount of time you have but by decisions that you made in a moments time.
In a moment of time I was saved, in a moment of time I accepted God's call to preach, and many of my greatest memories have come from being saved and being in church.
Palm Sunday for many was just another Sunday but if they had known what this moment would mean.
Palm Sunday was a time when doubts about who Jesus was would forever be erased.
I. The Meaning of Palm Sunday:
Palm Sunday meant the world finally. truly, completely had a Messiah.
Israel has given many things to this world. History, knowledge, technology, but nothing compared to its Messiah.
For 4000 years the Jews waited for a special person to come into the world.
Genesis 3:15 (KJV)
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis 49:10 (KJV)
10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
Deuteronomy 18:15 (KJV) Moses Said:
15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
Psalm 2:2 (KJV) David Said:
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
Anointed is the meaning of Christ: The Anointed One.
Old testment had a theme of the anointed one was coming, the promised one,
Matthew 16:13-19 (KJV)
13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
when we say Christ we are saying the Messiah, the anointed One,
Easter Sunday means Jesus rose from the dead, and the grave and because of that we have a hope of being resurrected.
And the meaning of Palm Sunday is The Messiah is definitely here.
You cannot have Jesus for what He does if you do not accept Him for who He is.
It is more than an intellectual knowledge or head knowledge is has to be an experienced knowledge or it has to be more than something in your head it has to be something in your heart.
II The Manifestation that is found on Palm Sunday:
the World would see its greatest example of majesty and meekness at the same time. These dont have to be exclusive from one another but usually they are.
Someone who has power and prestige usually are not humble but proud.
Yet He who created all things was born in a manager. Poor woman as a mother and a carpenter as a step father.
Over and over when he would heal someone, forgive someone do some miracle He would say see thou tell no man.
He had all power in Heaven and earth but tried to impress no one.
He found it easy to kneel and pray to His Father.
He found it easy to get on His knees and wash His disciples feet.
I wonder what He would do if He walked in here today.
Palm Sunday was the manifestation of majesty and meekness.
He rode a donkey which is what Kings rode on. When David was introduced as King of Israel he rode on a donkey, When Solomon became King he rode on a donkey.
He offered Himself as King,,, but was humbled as He rode on the foal. When the Lord of Glory abases Himself there is no room for any of us to be proud.
John 3:27 (KJV)
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
We need to be what God wants us to be...palm Sunday was a manifestation to show us that everything we have comes from God.
Pride has caused many people to reject Jesus because they think they don't need Him, or His help, or His forgiveness.
The meaning of Palm Sunday is that we have a Messiah, the manifestation of Palm Sunday is that we have majesty and meekness at the same moment, at the same time, in the same person.
III. The Message of Palm Sunday is:
It is truly possible for you to pass up the best opportunity of your life. It is possible to miss the greatest opportunity of your life.
That was the day. That was the moment. if they would have gone back and taken Daniels prophecy where he prophesied Palm Sunday years before.
His birth had been prophesied and the wise men came from the east. the king sent for the scholars and they knew where He was going to be born.
And Palm Sunday...the giving of Messiah was prophesied and they missed it.
42. Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
44. because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation
42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
What Jerusalem could have had but missed it... Peace but now it is foretold of her destruction.
Thousands of Jews died, temple destroyed all because they knew not the time of their visitation.
On this palm Sunday are we getting a visitation? this was the last time for these particular people.
There came a last time for the people of Noah's day.
There was a last time for Sodom and Gamorrah.
and there will be a last time for America.
