Introduction
Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”
Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”
And after saying this, he came out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no grounds at all for charges in His case.
We will again this week be camping, cultivating and consuming the truth of God’s word this morning in Titus chapter 1.
But before we turn there, I want us to dwell on the spirit of this conversation between Jesus Christ and Pontious Pilate. Let me set the context of the reality surrounding this conversation.
Jesus, the Son of God, the Bread of Life, the one who according to the gospel of John chapter 1 was in the beginning, before there was creation, He was in the beginning. He as the Son of God, the second person of the God head, perfectly God Himself in Spirit, was with God also in Spirit. John 4 tells us God is Spirit. His role in the beginning was to be the spoken and written word of God. The voice and persona of His truth. Hebrews 1 tells us Jesus is the perfect representation of the character of God in all righteousness, holiness, justice, and steadfast lovingkindness. A careful study of these two chapters proclaims that Jesus as God, was the word of God and holds all things together by His word. This is how we should think about Jesus. This is how we should think about His word, the bible, which was spoken long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, Jesus Christ Himself whom is the appointed heir of all things, through whom God also made the world. According to His word, Jesus became flesh, wrought in birth by the Holy Spirit, preserving all of His being as God, while dwelling with man in the flesh, to fulfill the law, to live a perfect life, John 1:9-11 “This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person. He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own people did not accept Him.” to reveal the very character of God to man in man’s rebellious state in sin, to preach the truth of God’s word, that man would repent of his sin rebellion, and turn to Christ as the promised Messiah, the Christ, that all who believe in Him - those who would confess with their mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they would would be saved; they would be saved from the wrath of God, which has been revealed from heaven, which according to Rom 1:18 , God’s wrath was revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth in unrighteousness. And these beliefs are evidenced in the heart, not in outwardly appearance. Just as God said to Samuel in selecting David as King to replace Saul in his rebellion toward God “ 1 Sam 16:7 “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God does not see as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”” Rom 10:10 “for with the heart a person believes [in Christ as the Son of God, sent as God and man, as the promised Messiah, the Christ, to provide the perfect atonement for man in his rebellion, his ungodliness, and his unrighteousness in faith], resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” John 1:12 “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name,”
And this Jesus had been handed over to the local government under the rule of Pilate, by his own people in their unbelief, in their rejection of Jesus Christ, remaining in their unrighteousness, and their effort to suppress the truth, to be put to death.
This is the surrounding reality of what has taken place leading up to this conversation between Jesus and Pilate in John 18:37-38 “Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?”
Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”
Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”
And in examining this conversation about truth, Steven Lawson in His book The Moment of Truth, eloquently points out that there are three microcosms - three elements of this conversation that become apparent as lenses for understanding. There is a rejection, there is a reality, and there is a reign of eternal consequence surrounding the truth of God and the rejection of His truth, even the questioning of His truth is unbelief and a rejection of the pure reality of His word.
We find this evidence in Genesis 3:1-7 “Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” The serpent said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.”
I want you to take note of the cunning here, the craftiness involved in Satan coaxing Eve in his questioning God’s word in God’s authority. Has God really said You shall not eat of any tree of the garden? And following this questioning, planting seeds of unbelief, Satan outright contradicts the word of God. “You certainly will not die.” He appealed to her flesh, he tempted her appealing to her appetite to become like God herself. And in this temptation, he coaxed her to reject God’s command, to reject the truth of His word, and exchange it for a lie. Just as Rom 1:25 “For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.” And as a result man was cursed in his sin rebellion, thrown out of the garden, downcast from the glory of God in which he once dwelt, and remains true for all mankind today. Eph2:1-3
And you were dead in your offenses and sins, in which you previously walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all previously lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the rest.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
ANd this is why we need Christ - this is why Christ was sent
But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
so that in the ages to come He might show the boundless riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, the gift of God’s grace is the truth of the gospel. Faith in Christ alone, in God’s grace alone, according to God’s word, His truth alone, for God’s glory alone. That no one may boast. You can’t work your way to salvation, you can’t merit your way to salvation, you can’t inherit your way to salvation in any other way. Jesus Christ is the The Way the Truth and the Life and no one can come to the Father but by Him. His work is not only sufficient for salvation of those who accept His truth and believe, but it is the only work, the only merit, and the only inheritance that leads to eternal life with God, and redeems the believer from his trespasses, and causes him or her to walk in His truth, to be sanctified - set apart from the world in His truth. There can be no addition to His truth, there can be no subtraction from His truth. John 8:31 “So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples;” John 8:32
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
This truth is the sound doctrine Paul is referring to in Titus 1:5-9 which we studied last week. Let’s look at it again.
For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, namely, if any man is beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of indecent behavior or rebellion. For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, but hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.

Proclaim the truth in sound doctrine
Now let’s read the rest of the passage here Titus 1:10-16
For there are many rebellious people, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of dishonest gain. One of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. For this reason reprimand them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.

a. Rejection Titus 1:9 “holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.”
Listen you either accept the truth of God’s word as the pure manna from heaven and believe, or you reject it in unbelief. Questioning the truth of God’s word is unbelief. Adding to God’s word as if it were not enough is unbelief. Taking away from God’s word, watering it down, presenting pieces of it, without presenting all of it, outside the context of how it is presented is unbelief. Rejecting the truth results in believing a lie. Those who reject the truth are liars, and their Father is Satan, the Father of lies. Listen to Christ in John 8:42-47 “Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from God and am here; for I have not even come on My own, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I say the truth, you do not believe Me. Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.””
b. Reality
The reality of this rejection of the truth is a compromise of the truth, which is deceit, which is empty talk, even if you give the appearance of being a follower, even if you use some of the truth or even most of the truth, but don’t believe or abide in all of the truth, you are not Christ’s disciple. You are a liar. You are a deceiver. Your words mean nothing. You will not abide according to the commands of God’s word. And this is the reality in Crete. Ungodly people have propelled themselves in their own selfishness to be seen and followed as leaders in man made religion. Upsetting entire households, teaching what they should not be teaching, and leading people away from the truth, leading people away from saving faith. In the name of God, they are turning people away from Christ and His word. This is why things need to be set in order. This is why godly men must be selected who are God’s stewards of His truth, who are not self-willed, who are beyond reproach, who are godly according to His truth, who are evidenced in the fruit of a changed life by their faith in Christ through His death, burial and resurrection as the Son of God, as both God and man -who is the Messiah. These stewards, these godly men, live in His righteousness as new creations in Christ, walking in the works God had prepared in advance for them to do. Their conduct is evident of the character of Christ, Titus 1:7-9 “For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, but hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined, holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.”
The reality of rejecting the truth, these leaders are not stewards of God’s word, they will find ways to compromise it to make it fit their scheme, to put them in a place of illegitimate power, and glory for themselves, to fulfill their own will, taking that which is evil and call it good, to take that which is good and make it seem evil. Just as Paul writes to the church in Corinth, 1 Cor 6:8-12 “On the contrary, you yourselves do wrong and defraud. And this to your brothers and sisters! Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor those habitually drunk, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. All things are permitted for me, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.”
The reality is that this same rejection of truth is alive and well not only in our culture today, not only in our government, but in our churches. Deceit and empty talk have been spread by false teachers and empty preachers throughout the churches, largely 2 contradicting sound doctrine.
Tim 4:3-4 “For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires, and they will turn their ears away from the truth and will turn aside to myths.”
And as a result in compromising the truth they cause others to turn away from the truth because they are “defiled and unbelieving, the truth is not pure to them, nothing is pure, and consequently their minds and consciences are defiled. Titus 1:16 “They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.”
We see examples of this in the lies and falsehoods of doctrines that have become known as the prosperity gospel, the word of faith movement, the new apostolic reformation, and the church of the latter-day saints of jesus christ. This is not an encompassing list of heretical followings and false teachings filled with lies and departures from the pure word of God, but it is likely that many of you if not all of you are being influenced by their false teaching either through their broadcasts, their podcasts, or their music and songs presented in the form of praise and worship. They have followings that boast of being some of the largest and fastest growing churches in the United States.

God’s will is that we be blessed with material things
Success in your walk with God depends on your tithes. Tithe the first 10% of your income, God will pour out blessings for you that you cannot contain. Tithing is the first key to financial prosperity. Taking old covenant promises to Israel out of context and applies them to new believers.
The main themes of his teachings are how people can improve their lives, be financially prosperous, and experience happiness.
He intentionally avoids preaching doctrinal truths of the gospel of the bible, specifically he avoids preaching that faith in Jesus as the Christ is the only way to heaven, he doesn’t preach sin nor repentance required for salvation, and he overlooks several biblically described behaviors as sinful. He preaches a feel good message materialistically motivated, focused on the prosperity of wordly wealth.
This prosperity gospel is rampant across western churches today and even more than that, and in direct conflict with God’s truth.

Famous for indoctrinating the phrase, “We have to conceive it on the inside before we are ever going to receive it on the outside.”
“If you don’t think you can have something good, then you never will. The barrier is in your mind. Your wrong thinking can keep you from God’s best.”
“To experience God’s immeasurable favor you must rid yourself of that small-minded thinking and start expecting God’s blessings, start anticipating promotion and supernatural increase. You must make increase in your own thinking, then God will bring those things to pass.”
These teachings are harmful and predicate your level of faith is the only thing holding you back from God’s materialistic blessing or physical healing. There is no biblical truth in these teachings, in fact these teachings are in direct conflict of verses 7-9 (self-willed, greedy, covetous, overindulging). They make the ones who follow them rely on their own strength, merit and will power for the receipt of their blessings from God as if He were our servant, waiting for us to come up with the blessing we have in mind, and then He will jump accordingly to provide as we have enough faith.
Word of faith doctrine expands to claim faith healing beyond worldly wealth. If you have enough faith, you can and will be healed by God. Again, it starts with tithing enough of an offering to result in material blessing and physical healing.
It’s very much like the followers are taught to view God as a heavenly ATM or genie in a bottle. All they have to do is swipe God with enough faith and giving, and He spits out materialistic blessing and physical healing.
In addition, word of faith movement encourages positive confession. Positive confession is the practice of saying what you want to happen with the expectation that God will make it a reality. If we speak aloud the right words with the right amount of faith, we can gain riches and health, bind Satan, and accomplish anything we want. This is literally the act of speak things that we want to happen into reality. This is opposed to negative confession, which is to acknowledge hardships, poverty, and illness and accept them rejected the good things God has planned for us. This is a form of mysticism in which people believe they can control their outcomes spiritually. In this practice, often times specific trance like chants are presented over and over, often with music in the guise of praise and worship, to specifically claim that chant as a truth that they are speaking into reality or existence. It teaches that positive statements will drive a positive reaction or outcome, and that negative statements will result in a negative outcome or reaction. This belief and teaching are heretical, and can devastate or even decimate the faith of a believer.
True confession is agreeing with what God has already proclaimed and revealed in His word. Positive confession is demanding human desires. Many positive confessional statements turn out to be outright lies. This defeats the hope of the believer because it is misplaced in human desires and worldly desires rather than in the work of Jesus Christ in His salvation.
Jesus promised that we would endure hardship, he did not promise a care free life or that our every want would be fulfilled. He promised to fulfill His plan for us for His glory, and that His grace is sufficient for us , especially in our trials and struggles, and suffering.
Many Word of Faith teachers use phrases such as "little gods" to describe believers. Kenneth Hagin wrote that God had created humans "in the same class of being that he is himself,"[19] and reasoned that if humans are made in God's image, they are "in God’s class",[20] and thereby ‘gods’.[20][21]

The New Apostolic Reformation or New Apostolic Church takes the prosperity gospel and word of faith practices to another level of heresy. They indoctrinate those within their following that the benefits of Jesus Christ can only be distributed through their appointed apostles and prophets. In other words, people are only saved through the gospel preached by their leaders, which degrades the power of God’s word to stand on its own power. They teach that the blessings of faith healing and transfer of wealth can only be distributed through their apostles and prophets. They teach that new revelations are crucial to overcoming the world, which also reinforces their belief that the word of God as it is is insufficient. Most of their prophecies are extremely vague and copy bible prophecies of old with a twist here or there. They teach that Jesus Christ had to lay His deity aside in order to perform miracles in human form, other wise they would be unattainable for man to experience them. This teaching enables them to justify they too can perform any or all of the miracles that Christ performed, as if they had greater power and greater standing with God in their gifts than others.

In 1838, Joseph Smith claims he was told in a revelation that the church should be called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Members of the New Testament church were called “saints” (see Acts 9:32, Ephesians 2:19, Philippians 1:1), which is why Mormons call themselves “Latter-day Saints.” As Gordon B. Hinckley, prior president of the LDS church, explains: “They were former-day Saints. We are the Latter-day Saints. It is that simple.” Hinckley adds that they are often called “Mormons” as a nickname given because they believe in the Book of Mormon as the word of God.
Mormonism has four written books of scripture: The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ (which claims to be a record of God’s dealings with the inhabitants of ancient America from 2000 BC to 400 AD), the Doctrine and Covenants (a collection of “revelations and inspired declarations” given for the establishment and regulation of the Church of Jesus Christ in the last days (1830 AD – 1978 AD)), The Pearl of Great Price (a selection of revelations, translations, and writings of Joseph Smith), and the King James Version of the Bible (“We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”)
3. The LDS church teaches that as the Bible has been transmitted over the centuries it has “suffered the loss of many plain and precious parts.” They believe the Bible to be the word of God “as far as it is translated correctly” and that the “most reliable way to measure the accuracy of any biblical passage is not by comparing different texts, but by comparison with the Book of Mormon and modern-day revelations.” The KJV is the LDS church’s official English Bible, though it has been foot-noted in a way that interprets the meaning to compliment LDS doctrines.
Mormons believe that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three separate gods. They also believe the Father and Son each have a “body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s” but that the Holy Ghost “has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit.” According to Joseph Smith, when Adam was formed in the image of God, it was a physical image. God the Father was once a mortal who lived on an earth. He died, was resurrected, glorified, and grew into his deified status. (According to Joseph Smith, there is a “God above the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”) God the Father is the literal father of all spirit-children, including Jesus and the Holy Ghost, whose divinity is derived from the parent-child relationship. Within Mormonism, Jesus is identified with the Yahweh of the Old Testament.
LDS teaching, all the Father’s children (including humans) possess the same potential to become gods (like the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost) since they are of the same species
“We believe that while human works are necessary— including exercising faith in Christ, repenting of our sins, receiving the sacraments or ordinances of salvation and rendering Christian service to our neighbors — they are not sufficient for salvation.”
“In summary, the undergirding doctrine of the Book of Mormon is that we are saved by the grace of Christ “after all we can do” (2 Nephi 25:23), meaning above and beyond all we can do.”
Jesus was not conceived by the Holy Spirit, but God the Father impregnated Mary, which again is a direct contradiction of Scripture.
The LDS teachings are included because there is such a wide following among professing Christians following the incredibly popular broadcast series called “The Chosen”. The founder of the Chosen, Dallas Jenkins, proclaims that the partnerships and relationships he has discovered with his like minded believing brothers and sisters of the catholic and Church of the Latter-Day Saints are in line with scripture, and that they worship and profess the same Jesus. I Tim 6:4-13
he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a sick craving for controversial questions and disputes about words, from which come envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and constant friction between people of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it, either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I direct you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate,
c. Reign of eternal consequence
The reign of truth results in the righteous salvation and sanctification according to the truth of God’s word, the faith, the knowledge of the truth, and the hope of eternal life. It results in an understanding of God’s word, a lifetime of obedience to God’s word.
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and follow His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. For whoever has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.
Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
The reign of unbelief in the lies of deceit and empty talk results in Titus 1:16
They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.
Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’
And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; leave Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Call to Action:
Which one describes you? Have you rejected the truth, or have you rejected the lie? Are you the wise man building his foundation fully on God’s truth on the rock of Jesus Christ? Or are you building you foundation on the lies of deceivers and empty preachers, which all ground in sinking sand?
