The Unity of Truth and Righteousness

Isaiah 11:5 “5 Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.”

Ephesians as a whole…know the truth, live the truth!

A standard by which to be declared righteous and to provide how to practice righteousness.

What is a breastplate?

Designed to cover the heart and the bowels.

The physical meaning.

Front and back, both.

Heart:

The mind of man.

Jeremiah 17:9 “9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Bowels:

The emotion of man.

Together:

Now, if you just take the mind and emotions together, they encompass everything that causes us to act.

They encompass the concept of knowledge.

That’s the first key to responding.

You’ve got to have a certain amount of knowledge.

Understanding, conscious, will, desires, drives, affections, feelings, emotions, all those things that cause us to act are protected by the breastplate of righteousness.

What is this righteousness?

It Is Not...

Innate Righteousness

Righteousness Already Within Us

NONE are Righteous...

Romans 3:9-12 “9 What then?

Are we Jews any better off?

No, not at all.

For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.””

They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. 3 They have all fallen away; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.”

The “Righteousness” We Do Have

Isaiah 64:6 “6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.

We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church #1446

Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion.

It is to them that the sacrament of Penance offers a new possibility to convert and to recover the grace of justification.

The Fathers of the Church present this sacrament as "the second plank [of salvation] after the shipwreck which is the loss of grace."

Justification has been merited for us by the Passion of Christ who offered himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God, and whose blood has become the instrument of atonement for the sins of all men.

Justification is conferred in Baptism, the sacrament of faith.

It conforms us to the righteousness of God, who makes us inwardly just by the power of his mercy.

Declared Righteous Through Christ

Ephesians 2:8-9 “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith.

And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Imparted Righteousness

Philippians 2:12-13 “12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”

Ephesians 4:1 “1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,”

Ephesians 4:24 “24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

When Satan accuses the Christian, it is the righteousness of Christ that assures the believer of his salvation.

But our positional righteousness in Christ, without practical righteousness in the daily life, only gives Satan opportunity to attack us.

Believer, when satan attacks...

rest in your salvation…that God has declared you righteous in Christ.

Before the Throne of God Above

VERSE 2

When Satan tempts me to despair

And tells me of the guilt within

Upward I look and see Him there

Because the sinless Savior died

My sinful soul is counted free

For God the Just is satisfied

To look on Him and pardon me

pursue holiness…that which proclaims your profession among the world.

Unbeliever,

understand you have no protection against Satan's attacks, you are entirely vulnerable.

understand that the righteousness of Christ has been made available through faith.
